i don't really believe in a god. to me it seems like the highest caliber of bullshit propaganda in the world. am i really expected to believe that i was created two-thousand years ago while science proves that humans have been around for far longer? i've never been religious, but recently certain points have been brought up that make me have even less belief about a "supreme being"

yeah yeah, jesus was sacrificed, but this father of his... when did he exist? when was he made "god"? was his name "god"?

the ancient egyptians were thought of as gods while they still lived, so why should i trust that jesus' father is my almighty one?

i just don't buy in to it.

please discuss.

Re: God

+1

If I don't believe in God it means I don't believe in Hell, so quit trying to convince me that I should believe and repent so I don't spent eternity in damnation. It doesn't work. proof is not all around me. The bible didn't predict shit. I can read the latest Harry Potter novel and interpret WW2 from it. your religion, along with the dozen other religions out there, aren't all the right "choice." And most of all, I don't want to donate a portion of my salary to your damned cult! quit looking down on me because I don't believe in what you believe.

Re: God

you are thinking about the christian god.. there are many many gods out there that different people believe in.. and each are better than the other one

imo, i am there with you.

After watching the series The Universe on discovery channel, the universe and everything in it is extraordinary. Noone knows how it all came about or how we came about, there are theories... a god creating it, in my opinion, just cheapens life
you are thinking about the christian god..
yes, since i'm catholic, i question the "god" i was taught to believe in.

i suppose if i we're anything else, i would probably also question the validity of that "god"

Re: God

The adoption of the concept of God is a major blocker to humans reaching their potential - scientifically, philosophically and behaviourally.

What a complete waste of life.

Re: God

I'm not religious and I don't believe in any gods, but there're times when I just wished there was someone out there to wave the magic wand or something.

Maybe it's something that springs from self-awareness and sentience. Sure we have all the scientific research or proof about human evolution, but that only explains the 'how.' We will always be saddled with the 'why:' Why us? Why this planet, just why are we here? And no theories of evolution can answer that.

I think humans just have the propensity to look to / for something bigger than themselves because at the end of the day, no matter what feats we've achieved as a race, we're still lost on a lump of rock floating through space.

Re: God

I was a policeman for 10 years, for 18 months during that time I was part of a team that investigated Occult Related Crimes. I saw some scary stuff! A 12 year old girl lift a 3 seater couch above her head, speak in a mans voice and ask me "can my christian god do this" A 18 year old girl manifest 27 different personalities in a matter of 2 hours speaking the worst disgusting filth against Jesus and God. Now why would these people not verbally abuse other gods or people? never once heard them speak against Mohomed, George Bush or Elvis.

I am no longer a practising christian being hurt by the people in my church a couple of years ago, but nothing can convince me otherwise that there is definately a spiritual realm/ parrallel universe where a war is being raged for each and every one of us.

Hell should never be a reason to commit to Christianity!

All religion is a choice and if it is forced down your throat, you will never understand the true value of it.

A brave choice of topic, because if there is a God and there is a Hell you in BIG trouble mate.:p

Re: God

I dont believe in god or any religion and resent the fact that virtually all wars have been related to religion is some way. I do think that Buddhism has alot going for it and particuarly like that there is no 'god' to pray to or be scared of. It is more of a philosophy then a religion.

Re: God

back in the day, it seems to me that religion was used to manipulate the masses by intimidation & to control those that couldnt think for themselves. & through greed or the needs of whoever is in power at the time, would distort the meanings behind the holy word to benefit them. my scepticism, the crazy fanaticals & several different branches or types of have kinda turned me off to the idea of religion as a whole. also find it funny how hypocritical the stiffist believers are & how they pick & choose things to follow or not follow to suit their needs.

I think there is a God and I really couldn't tell you why. He sits up there watching and does not interfere and we're merely his entertainment. People that leave everything up to God are retarded but then that's why we have make believe countries like Canada.

you're right, my math is off. whether it was 2,000 years ago or 10,000 years ago my point still stands. if we were "created" how did our creator know to give us things like the sense of smell. was someone making brownies while humans were "created" and decided hmm that smells nice i'll give humans the same sense?

ultimately i believe there are other planets out there with life forms - alien or human, whatever. seems like we are completely unevolved since all we do is kill one another and pay attention to idiots like britney spears and what color underwear she wore last week.

we are too simple and i just don't believe we are the only so-called "intelligent" beings in this universe.

It is my opinion that we feel deeply about certain topics on MS such as rape, child mollestation, child abuse (stories of strangers by the way) because we humans were designed in God's image and were purposely wired that way. Try this, everyone you know including you have been through something difficult/painful, well you could use those lessons you have learned by helping another human, maybe one without a family or terminally ill at a hospital. Your homework is to go help someone as discussed and report back as to your view on God and what you think are the possibilities are.

Lastly, If you (anyone reading this) are someone who thinks about mollesting children you need to get help because you are definitely sick.

i take care of my 83 year old grandmother everyday. feeding, cleaning up after her. does that count as "helping" :?:

another thing, i don't think "god" gave us feelings per se. i think humans experience emotions based on their own belief system and generally care for one another without having to submit to a "belief in a god"

I'm not trying to force feed anything by the way, but I do think we all miss out on understanding what we are here for when we don't help others (people we don't know) get through difficulties that we have experienced, and I think it these acts of love that can help answer tough questions about "God." That is all I am suggesting.

Damn Jib, you are a better person than most..

I'm not sure I believe in God..I do believe in doing good and helping others...Expecting nothing, and just being the best human being that I can possibly be...That's what I believe in.

Re: God

Depends upon how you define "God." I definitely do not believe in the version of God that envisions some supernatural being sitting on high, passing judgment on our actions and determining whether we go to heaven or hell when we die. I also think that 99% of organized religion is a complete farce. It always amazes me to see people that live horrible lives but think that spending 1 hour a week going through ritualistic BS excuses that. Ever go to church and watch people just totally go through the motions? Kneel here, mumble this, eat this and wash it down with grape juice, all cured. It's asinine.

With that said, I don't necessarily think that things in the universe are completely random. I guess I have a sense that there is some unseen force or energy that guides things, and that on some level, we have some control over our own situation. Ever notice how some people seem to have nothing but good fortune, while others seem to constantly be fighting adversity? I don't think that's the result of chance. To the extent that there's really no rational explanation for any of that, and that it's probably not rational for me to think of it, some people might equate that in a belief in a higher power. I'm not sure where I come down on that, honestly.

At the end of the day, though, I think that regardless of the source, many of the messages taught by the religions of the world -- love, respect, tolerance, doing unto others, etc. -- are worthwhile. The big difference for me is that I make an effort to make those principles a part of my day-to-day existence, not just something I do for an hour a week at a specific place.

My $.02

Re: God

^ if we use the biblical definition of 'know', in reference to the oft repeated phrase that "god 'knew' me before he created me".....there is a strong argument that our souls have been inappropriately touched without permission.

Isnt that contradictory ??

 • "on some level, we have some control over our own situation." and "Ever notice how some people seem to have nothing but good fortune, while others seem to constantly be fighting adversity? I don't think that's the result of chance."

If 'we' have control then it cant be "some unseen force or energy that guides things," doesnt it have to be one or the other?

just wondering - not trying to be an ass. (I dont need to try)

Re: God
I think God's name is Chester
... and he just got arrested in Nevada 3 days ago for appearing in a self made child porn video

my scientific side doesn't believe in God as an "entity" watching over us, waiting to pass judgment on us the day we die and reach his doorstep. What we do on this earth (good and evil) comes back to us in this very life and in itself becomes our heaven / hell. Short and sweet .... Karma is the result of your actions that eventually comes back to create the positive and negative "events" we life to face.

From where have we come? since we are here today, there must a supreme "creator" somewhere out there that we all call God but he is definitely not in any of the photos we have depicted him as, on this planet.

Perhaps a much much older civilization (perhaps millions of years older) with all its acquired technology and sciences has figured out a way to do "God-like" miracles, travel the zillions of light years of this universe like "angels" and are planting the seeds of life across inhabitable planets everywhere they can and move on, never looking back. Thereafter, evolution takes its course and life continues on.

As nick mentioned earlier on this thread, the world we live in is just one of the dimensions that maybe here because of an outstretched imaginative reason I mentioned above. There are so many other dimensions that we cannot even fathom to understand, each one of them having an even more far fetched reason for its existence.

I guess death in itself will eventually become your next birth where you'll probably learn so much more of why you were here, or why are you going where you are next.
