how rich are djs?!
Re: how rich are djs?!
Depends on the DJ really....starting out, a few hundred a night, in between a few $1000+, top of the line $10,000+ per gig
Re: how rich are djs?!
^^^ yeah 10k at least.. tiesto gets 45k on a weeknight and 60k on a weekend. Morillo, gets 60k when he plays Space in Miami.. so yeah, i am sure the top dogs are set for life
Re: how rich are djs?!
My perception is that it's a bit like the NBA...a small elite "make it" from a financial standpoint, by far most done. For every one DJ you know who is living large and securing lifelong financial stability through the craft alone, there are untold scores of others with street cred, lengthy gig resumes, even a few tracks released, working their asses off every day...all whom you have never heard of and who will have to largely supplement their income in other ways.
Not that they're necessarily in the game for the money anyways.
I fully disclose that my perception could be wrong...obviously I haven't talked to every DJ out there.

I think Jibs is skint.
Re: how rich are djs?!
This is how bad it can get when greed gets to their head.
B&D Entertainment faces legal implications and Organizer/spokesperson Ayman Al Hamad is reportedly in Jail after what is considered one of the hugest Rave scandals in the Middle East history!
DJ Tiesto event was a no show, allegedly due to the organizers stealing DJ Tiesto fees, in addition to THOUSANDS of tickets sales (ticket prices approximately ranging from 80-250$) and tried to flee Bahrain and were caught by authorities along the Saudi Arabian/ Bahraini border!
Fans were more than furious, while waiting anxiously for the superstar DJ appearance, and were given constant lies by organizers, as well as MTV presenter MC Hanane. And then hell broke loose and people stormed the DJ booth and started brawling and throwing glass bottles, chairs on DJs/announcers and security. The police arrived later on and shutdown the event.
The following is DJ Tiesto's formal appology:
"Dear fans, I am very sorry for what happened at the Marina Club in Bahrain last Wednesday. Allow me to explain to you what really took place.
The promoter disappeared after 1 a.m. with the DJ fee and the money everybody had paid for their tickets.
I still wanted to play at the party, so I was waiting for somebody to pick me up from the hotel and bring me to the venue. At 2 a.m., still nobody had arrived and we heard that police was already on the way to the venue. At that moment, I had no other choice than to stay in my hotel room.
The promoter tried to escape Bahrain, but luckily he got caught near the Saudi Arabian border. He is in jail at this moment.
Again, I am very sorry for what happened and I will definitely try to find a way to make it up with all my fans who bought tickets for the show."
The other side of the story
MANAMA: Dutch DJ Tiesto failed to show up for his debut Bahrain concert on Wednesday night allegedly because he refused to recognise Bahraini dinars as a valid currency.
Local event organiser Prime Time Entertainment yesterday said that the DJ refused to accept dinars but had already been paid 18,000 euros (BD9,243) in advance to cover his private jet expenses.
"We also paid him ?20,000 (BD15,166) and $10,000 (BD3,780) on the night and offered the remainder in dinars but he refused it," event organiser Ayman Al Hamad told the GDN yesterday.
He refuted the apology the DJ's official website posted and confirmed that legal action would soon be taken against him.
The message on the website claimed that Tiesto, whose real name is Tijs Verwest, was stranded without a vehicle to travel from the Diplomat Radisson SAS Hotel, Residences and Spa, Manama, where he was staying, to the Marina Club.
"It's very stupid for him to say that," said Mr Al Hamad.
"If I could arrange for a jet, how can he even say that?
"Even if I didn't have a car for him any of the fans would be happy to offer one of theirs."
Mr Al Hamad believes that the DJ wasn't keen on playing after he learned that only about 3,000 fans were expected to attend the show.
Mr Al Hamad urged people with pictures and videos of the melee to come forward with evidence, to further the investigation.
"We have about 20 names and numbers of people who were filmed destroying things and we want more," he said.
He also confirmed that refund issues were currently being chalked out, and details would be announced soon.
ShowTech Productions, who provided audio visual equipment for the event, confirmed that it would cost about BD20,000 to BD25,000 to repair damaged equipment.
Marina Club food and beverage manager Suresh Naik said that it only rented out the venue and wasn't part of the organising team.
"We only did the catering for regular ticket-holders while they (the organisers) handled the VIP and VVIP catering," Mr Naik told the GDN.
Mr Naik said that there was "considerable" damage done to furniture, glasses and fridges, but was unable to project an estimated amount.
Local event organisers Outlaw Productions urged the organisers to refund tickets to disgruntled fans.
"The organisers requested Outlaw Productions to provide some ushers from the crew members to help out at the event, so Outlaw Productions crew members were merely manpower," it said in a statement.
"We would like to express our strong resentment to bad planning, lack of organisation and the way the organisers dealt and are dealing with the chaotic situation."
The event's warm-up DJ Karim Miknas said that the biggest shame was that the headlining artist didn't entertain the audience, some of whom had flown in from Kuwait, Dubai and other Gulf states.
He also urged the organisers to refund tickets and compensate fans, injured during the fracas.
"I agreed to play purely for the honour of opening for the best DJ on the planet," he said. COLOR=red
The youngsters were enjoying themselves and were excited, but how much longer could they wait for their hero?
"I don't blame them at all, it was the organisers who messed up."
Dubai-based MC Hanane and local DJ Jackson were also attacked by irate fans during the melee, he said.
Disgruntled fans who bought tickets from Hava Java at the Seef Mall stormed the store yesterday demanding refund for the failed show.
A spokesman for the store said that they only provided tickets for the show and that their involvement ended there.
"Unfortunately the event's promoter took the ticket sales money with him just before the show," said the spokesman.
"He (the organiser) really should be ashamed of himself.
Re: how rich are djs?!
Quality, thats what you get for liking tesicle.
Re: how rich are djs?!
top of the line $10,000+ per gig
Some DJs have collected well over 100K for a gig. Now that's crazy.
Re: how rich are djs?!
I would agree with the comment above that most are working their asses off without swimming in riches. Can you make enough money to make it your career? Sure. But consider that you won't be doing it forever (or if you are you will be spending your energy trying to keep your sets off the internets), you have no pension, no employer helped retirement plan and no health insurance. So even if you are livin large you better be putting a big chunk of it away or end up being a greeter at walmart in the twilight of your life. "Hi Welcome to Walmart!" "Yeah where are the tiesto cds at old man?"
Re: how rich are djs?!
60 k for a gig in pace miami seems like to much ... how much they paid sasha and digweed and masiello and warren last wmc then ?
Re: how rich are djs?!
awesome thread and great read
Re: how rich are djs?!
60 k for any gig anywhere seems ridiculous imo. But, I guess if that particular dj can sell X amount of tickets which cost some Y amount, then anything is possible. Anyone know how much mainstream bands are paid for the average show?
Re: how rich are djs?!
fuck mainstream bands.
Re: how rich are djs?!
3000 tkts @ $50 = $ 150000 dlrs ... if he gets 50000 , thats 100000 for the club ... theres the warm up dj and the whole operation of the club .... tiesto charging 45-60 K for an ARENA SHOW seems believable , but 60 k morillo's gig @ space miami seems waaaayyyyyyy too much
Re: how rich are djs?!
You forgot to add in the bar take for the club...150K at the door is merely a drop in the overall bucket ;)

Yeah, then he'll threaten to sue you if you tell anybody;)
Re: how rich are djs?!
hahaha
Re: how rich are djs?!
so enough about big djs. i really not interested in knowing about tiesto. seem like waste of time. i guess sasha and digweed make good enouh money. howbout a lil lower level djs that are almost uknow. the greats that all of us know howmuch more the deserve.
Re: how rich are djs?!
Yeah, then he'll threaten to sue you if you tell anybody;)
You bet he will:P
Re: how rich are djs?!
I think it depends on the gig. If you go to their management site and try and book a big name DJ you usually have to fill out a questionnaire. One of the questions is How Much Are You Willing To Pay. Top Djs select their gigs not just on fees. I remember Oakenfold got an application from somewhere in the north of Canada i think saying they couldn't afford his fee but would put him up and guarantee it would be brilliant gig. Oakenfold took the gig. I remember Sasha saying when he was playing The BOMB in Nottingham. When i play The BOMB i get a few hundred pounds, when i play Fabric i get 10K
Re: how rich are djs?!
^^ I remember Sasha saying in an interview once he liked the more intimate gigs than the big huge arena-super festival ones anyway.
Re: how rich are djs?!
^ ^ Too bad he doesn't throw down a better set. :p
Re: how rich are djs?!
they must pay lots in taxes ..
Re: how rich are djs?!
i bet they write off cocaine as a business expense though
Re: how rich are djs?!
drastically overpaid imo. actually makes u puke to think that in one gig they make more than most of us make in a year. must be nice to get paid like that to play cds. and not to mention the incredible party favors they get to consume for free
Re: how rich are djs?!
^^ well...not just musicians, one could argue that all celebrities are overpaid.... It's the nature of the game if you can produce such demand all over the globe for your services, whatever they may be.

Tiesto played here in TO back in the summer of 2005 at The Docks Nightclub and instead of his fee, he took a percentage of the ticket sales....he made somewhere around $75,000 for that one night.

I've seen Tiesto in arena shows, and I can assure you that he takes home 100k-200k during special nights (i.e New Year's arena shows).
Do the math: 20,000 x 100$ = 2,000,000$ on admission prices alone (on avg, plus/minus for VIP or discount rates). Add in venue revenue (water at 5-7$ per, red bull at 7-10$ per) and you've got another 500,000$ easy.
Oakenfold in NYC usually took home 60-75k during special release parties; less but more frequent payments for residencies.

Morillo got $100k for his performance at a Sydney festival not too long ago. Crazy money.
It's not just the party favours to benefit from. All their travel expenses paid for, meals, etc. The local promoter usually entertains and takes care of them for the length of time that they're in town.
Re: how rich are djs?!
^^^ I'm not fussed how much they get paid and long as I like them, [guess they have to make hay while the sun shines:)] but $100,000 for a festival??? How long did he play. ??????
Btw . Not one of my faves !!
Interesting that some of the top ones drop their fees to play where they like and are appreciated :)
