Re: "An Inconvenient Truth" banned in schools

Dear world,

If we do not stop smoking and drinking beer, we are going to cause global warming. when the smoke rises it cause the earth to get hotter. and hot is not good. also the beer does not help because when you piss outside it causes the icebergs to melt. we have to stop this now or the polar bears are going to eat us, because the ice keeps them there. they will swim over to us and eat us. all of us.

Stop the warming!
The thing I don't get is even if you choose to believe that global warming doesn't exist, why do you put up such a defense to improving the planet anyway.

Pollution is undeniable, so are the problems we create through landfill, etc. These are the kinds of things that have to change regardless of whether global warming exists or not.

I'm no greenie by any stretch of the imagination, but environmental sustainability is a very real issue that still isn't really getting the attention it deserves.

If you can't do it for these reasons at least do it for the reason that you will have beautiful beaches to laze around on, and awesome scenic shots to snap when holidaying, or a nice harbour to look out at from your office window.

And to reiterate what DIDI said, maybe you should check Al Gore's page on Wikipedia to see how long he's been plugging away at environmental issues...
Totally agree !! Why fight against making the world a better place to live in. It's not a matter of depriving ourselves of anything, it's just a matter of doing things in a better way.

Re: "An Inconvenient Truth" banned in schools

Here's a juicy bit of news from last week:
Scientists accuse Exxon Mobil of discrediting global warming

Associated Press

WASHINGTON ? Exxon Mobil Corp. gave $16 million to 43 ideological groups between 1998 and 2005 in a coordinated effort to mislead the public by discrediting the science behind global warming, the Union of Concerned Scientists asserted today.

The report by the science-based nonprofit advocacy group mirrors similar claims by Britain's leading scientific academy. Last September, The Royal Society wrote the oil company asking it to halt support for groups that "misrepresented the science of climate change."
http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/business/4441543.html

Based on many of the posts in this thread, some of you need to bone up on this issue before spouting off.

Re: "An Inconvenient Truth" banned in schools

first of all, they are 'accused'. not guilty. second, being that there is no evidence to prove that mankind is the cause of global warming, how could it be possible misrepresent psuedo-climate-science?

it's like if Exxon funded think-tanks and universities that studied evolution. The AP would report that "a large sector of the american public stands to accuse EXXON of discrediting creationism".

This is a very ironic example to use since that is precisely what they are doing-- funding the debate, just like the "teach the debate" strategy creationists are using.
Um, no, it's a theory because it can't be proven. Find me a notable scientist who regards it as fact. Mankind is responsible for expediting the process. Again, there's enough evidence to show pre/post industrial revolution carbon emissions. The correlation is clear and scientists worry that the process is going faster than it should be. It's having a ripple effect on the food chain and fortunately it hasn't reached us yet.

I never saw the movie so I can't comment on what his data was.
Sir David King, chief advisor on science to the British government says it is fact, I know this cos I heard him lecture on the subject with my own ears. I am a scientist also and I say it is fact (not saying I am a notable scientist)

There's also no proof that man causes smog either. There's absolutely no way that tiny, little 'ol man could ever create enough gases to ever cause any changes to the atmosphere. Period.

Anyway, hope you guys in the Alps enjoy your 2 month ski season. The season that was once much longer than that.

Re: "An Inconvenient Truth" banned in schools

Why are so many people so eager to acknowledge that the earth is warmer, but they'll deny that the sun is and has been hotter than usual for the past 15 years or so? Why no acknowledgement of the increase sun activity? Because to admit that would be to admit that this may be the reason for what we call global warming.

#790510Post 61 of 98

Re: "An Inconvenient Truth" banned in schools

In the same lines, why are you so eager to deny the (maybe partial) human involvement?

#790522Post 62 of 98

Re: "An Inconvenient Truth" banned in schools

to bankrupt those whose psuedo-science depends on funding. This would be geared mostly towards political activists behind the man-made global warming idea that are trying to slow the 'machinery of evil enterprise'. And to tell newbie socialists (and the old communist guard) that historical climate revisionism is wrong.

Acid rain-- we did that Ozone layer hole-- we did that.

Obviously mankind's activity has an impact on the atmosphere. Why is it so hard to accept that distrupting the balance of greenhouse gases with massive amounts of hydrocarbons will also have a negative effect?

The truth about global warming - it's the Sun that's to blame By Michael Leidig and Roya Nikkhah

Global warming has finally been explained: the Earth is getting hotter because the Sun is burning more brightly than at any time during the past 1,000 years, according to new research. A study by Swiss and German scientists suggests that increasing radiation from the sun is responsible for recent global climate changes.

Dr Sami Solanki, the director of the renowned Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research in Gottingen, Germany, who led the research, said: "The Sun has been at its strongest over the past 60 years and may now be affecting global temperatures.

"The Sun is in a changed state. It is brighter than it was a few hundred years ago and this brightening started relatively recently - in the last 100 to 150 years."

Dr Solanki said that the brighter Sun and higher levels of "greenhouse gases", such as carbon dioxide, both contributed to the change in the Earth's temperature but it was impossible to say which had the greater impact.
So even your own sources for this sun theory agree greenhouse gases are playing a role. Now I'm not a scientist, but it seems to me that if we agree higher temps/rising sea levels is a bad thing, shouldn't we focus on the part of the cause that we have some control over? I don't know of a way to control the temp of the sun, but I'm pretty sure we do have the means to limit how much poison we dump into the sky.

still in denial tell me one thing who wins if people reduces oil consumption ? who wins if we save electricity?

i mean... see any political or economical goal on this?

#791098Post 68 of 98

Re: "An Inconvenient Truth" banned in schools

No one wins.

In 1857 the world thought whale blubber was gonna run out and people wouldn't have oil to light lanterns.

People wanted light. So they figured out a way to generate it without whale blubber. Now you might say it was luck we found oil in the ground. Maybe. But I say people will find ways to get the things they want and need. So if, oil is running out or us burning it is causing harm to the environment, when people figure this out for themselves and see the need to move on they will.

#791172Post 69 of 98

Re: "An Inconvenient Truth" banned in schools

we got oil for decades and decades. that is stupid gullible issue as well. last year at some time there was a release that we have truly not even tapped into the oil fields. and actually a lot more out there. Once again a scare tactic. Believe what you will, but I ain't no sucker. Sure cars are bad, they stink, they break down, etc. If you also look at the car industry, cars are more environmentally safe. They have emissions they need to follow, DEQ to pass. etc. so pick your battle. You will not win this one. It is a loosing battle.

Does anyone remember Earth day? That started a couple decades ago. It was actually a pretty large event. I remember in school that is all that was taught and educated.

This global warming BS is no different in sayting that power is bad. Great. Happy to hear that. As of right now we have no options. People need power, our world needs power. People will use power. Get my drift? It is a lost battle. You can freak out all you want, this and that, over here over there. Have fun. I am going to go burn tires in my backyard.

Re: "An Inconvenient Truth" banned in schools

DOM.

you are out of your mind. sorry.

dude, two weeks ago, here in NY, is was 62 degrees in JANUARY. it isnt hard to see, the impact of glabal warming is right in front of us. glaciers are shrinking faster than ever. the polar ice caps are losing acres a day. temps are 3-5 degrees above normal. wildlife in the furthest points north and south is dying.

glabal warming is indeed real, and while killing each other doesnt harm the planet, a lot of the stuff we do is. i still cannot fathom how people so handidly disregard scientific evidence that we are not only harming the earth, but doing it at an exponentially faster rate over the last half decade.

this shouldnt even bring politics or economics into play. frankly, the responsibility to maintain a healhty atmosphere and ecolological life should be above all.

and you damn well know im not a tree hugging liberal whino cunt. but comon.

ps. " That may be the real Inconvenient Truth. Eat beef save the world. I have done my research. I do not use one source, but I use many. I use both sides of the blade, and I draw my conclusion. There is not a single common factor in the world that is causing the world to warm up. In general the overall temp in has not changed. Sure certain areas have become more hot, but also other parts have become more cold. So ... yeah. You take your global warming and mix it in with cow farts.

" The alarmists also enjoy a huge financial advantage over the skeptics with numerous foundations funding climate research, University research money and the United Nations endless promotion of the cause. Just how much money do the climate alarmists have at their disposal? There was a $3 billion donation to the global warming cause from Virgin Air’s Richard Branson alone. The well-heeled environmental lobbying groups have massive operating budgets compared to groups that express global warming skepticism. The Sierra Club Foundation 2004 budget was $91 million and the Natural Resources Defense Council had a $57 million budget for the same year. Compare that to the often media derided Competitive Enterprise Institute’s small $3.6 million annual budget. "
