Gore's 'Truth' restricted at schools

                                                                         The Associated Press

FEDERAL WAY - The school board in this suburb south of Seattle has restricted showings of Al Gore's movie on global warming, including requiring that it be balanced with an adequate opposing viewpoint.

The board also required Superintendent Tom Murphy to approve when the former vice president's film, "An Inconvenient Truth," can be presented.

The decision was sparked by complaints from parents who said their child was taking the film as fact after viewing it at school.

"Condoms don't belong in school, and neither does Al Gore. He's not a schoolteacher," said Frosty Hardison, a parent of seven who doesn't want the film shown at all. "The information that's being presented is a very cockeyed view of what the truth is," Hardison told the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. "The Bible says that in the end times everything will burn up, but that perspective isn't in the DVD."

Board President Ed Barney told The News Tribune of Tacoma on Wednesday that he'd received about a half-dozen complaints from parents.

"We have to ensure that our schools are not being used to politically indoctrinate anyone," said board member Dave Larson, who with Barney and board member Charlie Hoff voted Tuesday for the requirements.

None has seen the movie. District policy, however, requires that an opposing view be aired whenever a controversial issue is examined in school.

"I am shocked that a school district would come to this decision," the movie's co-producer, Laurie David, said in a prepared statement. "There is no opposing view to science, which is fact, and the facts are clear that global warming is here, now." Gore's documentary has received approval from some of the nation's top climate scientists for its accuracy.

In it, he presents scientists' findings on the catastrophic dangers of climate change. Federal researchers with the National Academy of Sciences have said the planet's temperature has climbed to levels not seen in thousands of years, and has begun to affect plants and animals.

But Larson offered two opposing articles, including one by author John Stossel that said many scientists discredit global warming predictions. He also cited NASA and NOAA Web sites referring to debate and disagreement over climate change.

The film also has been denied a showing at Tacoma's Remann Hall, a high school for juvenile offenders, where Principal Rue Palmer denied a teacher's request.

The film hasn't been approved by the Tacoma district's curriculum committee. The school also focuses on core subjects and doesn't generally show films, explained Patti Holmgren, Tacoma School District spokeswoman.

The National Science Teachers Association turned down an offer from the film's producers for 50,000 free DVDs for classroom use. The association said it didn't want to be seen as politically endorsing the film or open itself to requests from other special interests.
I can't believe the wouldn't want to show this. Clearly, the religious viewpoints are the driving force behind the ban. The goes mother earth.

Facts ?!? I am not so sure about the facts aspect, I will credit you this it was done and instilled fear into many people. Great political campaign tool, actually perfect. In retrospect many aspects were ignored or altered to fit the case of Global Warming. I am not saying that it's not going to happen nor it is happening. The fact still remains we live on one planet and what "we" in a global aspect can/will/may cause adverse conditions. That is what makes me so upset. If truly this was Gore's passion and agenda, we would of heard of it during his election, but we did not. It is a political ploy, like using religion in your battle. It's a crap shot. Michael Moore Redux.

Re: "An Inconvenient Truth" banned in schools

I'm somewhere in the middle on this (as I am on many things..). While I do agree that global warming is real and is not something to just discard as political fantasy, I do also agree that Al Gore's movie is more open to question than people may think...

Yes, the science-based evidence behind global warming is what it is...it is happening. The key question is: WHY is it happening? How much of current global warming trends are due to humanity (i.e., cars, rain forest stuff, etc.) and how much is due to natural events beyond our control (i.e., the sun)?

This is not the first time that the earth has experienced "global warming". We've gone through several drastic warming and cooling periods (ice ages, anyone?) long before people were around. The sun does not emit energy at a constant rate; it has cycles of greater and lesser intensity.

All this is not to say that people may not be contributing significantly to global warming - maybe they are. But it's tough for science to determine the relative proportional contribution. What we're doing now is seeing the symptoms and assuming that it's us - which may not be a bad approach anyways...perhaps better to err on the side of caution (plus it's generally better for the environment..).

In no way was I trying to defend Gore. I sat down to watch the movie assuming it was political propaganda and was ready to look past it. Miroslav it right on. No one can prove beyond any doubt what the cause of all this is but it cannot hurt to conserve our energy and resources. Im not democratic or republican, just human, and realize that something is happening and anything that I can do to help preserve the future of our home is a positive action and that is a fact.

The episode of South Park where the kids are voting between a giant douche and turd sandwich for their new school mascot accurately represents my feelings on politicans....

Re: "An Inconvenient Truth" banned in schools

what kills me was the REASON why this jackass wanted it cancelled. I saw this yesterday and was like, "hmmm, finally someone eliminating this from schools because of the flawed science in the movie. about time." But I read on, and I read it again. I couldn't believe it. This fvckface wants this movie banned because it doesn't show up in the BIBLE?

I honestly don't know how to respond to this one. Not only do i hate scare-science, but I hate religion, too.

I say we ban both from schools and get on with things..

Well, I'm certainly no expert on it...but that's perhaps the rub - we maybe won't know the full cause until we're looking in the rear view mirror. And if it's us, it will certainly be too late by then...so it's important to act now. On the other hand, if it is just the sun, then we'll all be screwed anyways :D yay.

When a retarded gnome from Texas tells you that a few thousand fellow countrymen have to be slaughtered and billions of dollars need to be flushed down the toilet because of imaginary WMD's, you swallow it without questions. Hell, you even kept believing that shit when it was clear that there were no WMD's.

But when another guy warns for the consequences of the way we abuse our natural resources and polute the planet, you laugh at it and assume that there's a hidden agenda behind it.

Al Gore's interest in environmental issues didn't start last week. He got into it after he had lost the presidential elections. Saying that it's a (electoral) campaign tool is bs in its purest form. Yes, the tone of the movie is aimed at scaring people, so in that way it sure is propaganda. But it's about freaking time that we wake up and get scared before we reach the point of no return...

I wonder why it is that some people find it so hard to believe that global warming is real. I'm not an enviromentalist, but through my work I get to deal quite a lot with these issues (industrial waste treatment, polution, clean production technologies, energy efficiency, ...) and there's no doubt in my mind that if we continue canibalizing the ecosystem like we do now, shit is going to hit the fan BIG TIME in a few decades (and I'm not only talking about global warming).

Just ask yourself what legacy you want to leave behind for your children.

Why is it that people that are not from America, blame the people of America for the mistakes and the stupidity of our president??? Just because he is our president, doesnt mean that every single one of us voted for him. I really wish people who claim to be intelligent on any scale would stop with the generalization that the American people are gullible and will believe anything that they hear, because it's getting a bit old, and its just not true...Do you really think that we have a say in what our president does, or decides to do?????:roll::roll:
what motivation? to do what Kinky? Ban Cars? Ban Coal Plants that Produce Power? Ban Ships that Burn Diesel for Goods? Ban Gas? Ban how we humans live?

Yeah. I would love to. It's actually on my list to self disrupt society.
You see, that's exactly what some companies as well as some morons with power (like Bush) want you to believe: that warping society back to the Middle Ages is the only alternative. That or "you as an individual on your own can't make a change, so why worry?" Both statements are bullshit.

First of all, yes we should ban the way we live. That doesn't mean we should lower our quality of living, have hunger or do less fun stuff. We only need to use our brain when while consuming. Using less packaging, chosing for packaging which can be recycled, taking your bike instead of your car when you're hopping over to the store to get a loaf of bread, turning down the central heating system down one degree, using public transport as much as possible, organize carpooling, switch off the light when you leave a room, not leaving electrical equiment in standby, but switching them off completely, ...

Our minister of environmental affairs has set a goal for Kyoto: every Belgian has to do an effort to lower his CO2 production with 1.000 kgs per year. That sounds crazy and irrealistic, but it's not. By taking a few simple measures you really can make a huge difference without any loss of comfort. Better even: efficient use of energy and water saves a lot of money.

Since my house is a construction yard at the moment, I'm seizing the oportunity to implement a few things. Better isolation and energy efficient central heating for instance. Or connecting my drain pipes to an underground collector to water the garden and wash the car with free water. Or replacing the old lighting with more efficient solutions...

I'm not going to sit back and wait until someone proves beyond any doubt that the planet is going to shit. By then it will already be too late imo. And even if global warming isn't "real", at least I'll be saving up to 30-40% on my bills...

I know not all Americans have voted for Bush and I know not all Americans are dimwits. In fact, I'll be the last to say that I hate the US. When I post something about the situation in Iraq, did I once say "told ya so"? I think not. Sorry bro, but you can't acuse me of being a generalizing US basher. A Bush basher yes, an American basher no...

But it is a fact that Bush has fooled you together with a few other countries that there was a need to declare war on Iraq. I'm happy that the majority of the Americans have come to realise that they've been lied to and have been treated like idiots by their own leaders.

Btw, since when don't you have a say in what your president does, or decides to do? I thought the US was a democracy like my own country...

Re: "An Inconvenient Truth" banned in schools

The thing I don't get is even if you choose to believe that global warming doesn't exist, why do you put up such a defense to improving the planet anyway.

Pollution is undeniable, so are the problems we create through landfill, etc. These are the kinds of things that have to change regardless of whether global warming exists or not.

I'm no greenie by any stretch of the imagination, but environmental sustainability is a very real issue that still isn't really getting the attention it deserves.

If you can't do it for these reasons at least do it for the reason that you will have beautiful beaches to laze around on, and awesome scenic shots to snap when holidaying, or a nice harbour to look out at from your office window.

And to reiterate what DIDI said, maybe you should check Al Gore's page on Wikipedia to see how long he's been plugging away at environmental issues...

Agreed, that was my whole point really in posting the article, not so much the fact that they want the movie banned, but WHY they want it banned.

Anyone read a State of Fear? Michel Creighton's recent novel dealing with this subject? He presents a lot of evidence against global warming if anyone is looking for any.

Re: "An Inconvenient Truth" banned in schools

Global Warming is not proven. It's a theory that has a significant amount of evidence supporting it. There is an insurmountable evidence that shows that we've sped up the warming process since the start of the industrial revolution. This theory is as credible as evolution is to our scientific progress.

Re: "An Inconvenient Truth" banned in schools

global warming is a fact. it's not a theory.

HOWEVER, what we're arguing about is whether it is influenced by man, or not. There is very little evidence that global warming is a result of man (see the UN Report on this), and it is not new to the modern era. Global Warming has been happening since the dawn of man, and before. If mankind is responsible for global warming, it's because we breed too much livestock, haven't stopped geothermic forces beneath the Earth, and so on....

Yes, global warming is a fact, but don't believe the context with which people assumably talk about it.....it's not man-made...

If AL GORE was so into saving the 'environment', then why did he use such flawed data in his movie? To me, if you're serious about doing something positive, you get the best reliable data there is, and make your case. I think this stinks of creating a legacy. He doesn't want to be remembered as the guy who lost the 2000 election, so what better way to create one.

ANYWAYS....

Um, no, it's a theory because it can't be proven. Find me a notable scientist who regards it as fact. Mankind is responsible for expediting the process. Again, there's enough evidence to show pre/post industrial revolution carbon emissions. The correlation is clear and scientists worry that the process is going faster than it should be. It's having a ripple effect on the food chain and fortunately it hasn't reached us yet.

I never saw the movie so I can't comment on what his data was.

Ye well instead of bullshitting about what the reason is, we'd better spend time on optimizing our energy use and find durable sources.

I bet those who're sitting back and calling global warming a hoax are the first ones to start looking for someone or something to blame when shit starts to go really bad.
