Just got an email about a future GU release: Nick Warren is going to do #31in Paris...Warren is a cool dj and I enjoyed most of his GU mixes but...I wish they would get some new djs to put together mixes. (Ex: Hernan Cattaneo, Desyn Masiello, etc)

Why this series is still going is beyond me.

Re: Nick Warren - GU 31 Paris

I must admit the long time between mixes makes me wonder how they make any cash

Re: Nick Warren - GU 31 Paris

It would do better just to give Nick his own series like Seb had Prototype

Re: Nick Warren - GU 31 Paris

Imo Nick Warren isn't that great of a dj from what I've heard. Track selection is always on point but mixing wether cd, or live has never done anything for me. whichever GU it was that he did with the track "dirty" ( obscene , dirty, filthy, immoral, etc) was one of the worst mixed cd's I have ever heard. No thought put into it at all. I guess he's the only one willing to keep it going, aside from deep dish. I agree with the above, new talent or just halt the whole thing.

Re: Nick Warren - GU 31 Paris

I've enjoyed most of Nick's older sets... but yes we need new talent to pump up the series.
Why this series is still going is beyond me.
why? because they dont pick shitty redneck tech house DJs?

No it was the amsterdam set i'm thinking of. the renaissance set was great I agree, I think it had a remix of that track on it. But amsterdam definitely turned me off.

Re: Nick Warren - GU 31 Paris

i like that one too ahaha. disc 1 at least is awesome. the 2nd one has some banging tunes, but its messy as hell, yeah

#725173Post 11 of 148

Re: Nick Warren - GU 31 Paris

like i said, great tracks for the most part, but mixing eh. Maybe my expectations were too high, but after san fran and sydney and the nubreed series, you'd think it would be different. speaking the nubreed series why was Zabiela never put in that set.? His style to me is one of the most unique.

Re: Nick Warren - GU 31 Paris

i'd imagine its the same reason hernan, fanciulli, and them aren't on GU...they got deals elsewhere. 6-7 years ago GU was what...like the only big prog comp series around? djs can get their stuff out elsewhere now. the whole city-theme thing is still awesome though.

I totally agree. sometimes the cd's are worth buying just for the sleeves and such.

when it comes to zabiela I meant back when GU was stil reigning, Zabiela was around I just wondered, especially when Satoshi tomeii was put on there and that cd wasn't unique or "nu" to me at all. it sounded like Pappa's resolution.

dirty was defo on renaissance. i didnt like his mix, but loved danny howells... man i wish i had that with me now! forgot about that one...

Re: Nick Warren - GU 31 Paris

GU has become a self-parody...that´s my only explanation for this.

And what the fuck is up with choosing Paris? Is Paris supposed to have a clubscene? Well that´s a laugh! 10 years ago british magazines talked about "A Paradise Called Portugal" and they still haven´t made one here. Or Madrid, for that matter.

#725281Post 16 of 148

Re: Nick Warren - GU 31 Paris

^^ Well, I guess that first they choose the dj and then the dj chooses the city where he likes to play most at that given time.. I noticed that Nick Warren had a couple of gigs in Paris lately.. And yeah, the city theme is still a nice idea :D

#725284Post 17 of 148

Re: Nick Warren - GU 31 Paris

i know everyone is bitchin about this, but i think Nick is the shit and look very forward to this. Yeah, the city idea is still awsome, i mean these guys play around the world in a different city each night, right. this way they pick their favourite and throw a party there and make a cd of it.What more could you want? Nick KNOWS how to bring it.
Why this series is still going is beyond me.
you got that right...and why they would want to do one with hernan is even more...

doesn't the guy already have enough cd's that come out every year. he's doing around one a year...digweed does 1 every three or so years.

Not quite true of late. . . Fabric 20 and Azuli Choice came out within months of each other in 05 and this years there been Transitions with another one due soonish (wasnt the idea 2 a year?). . . . . 3 in 18 months. . . . . but it's Digweed right!!!!!

Back to Warren. . . . I'd rather have another Warren GU then a Lavelle or Deep bloody Dish one any day,

yeah definitely on the latter half of your post!

thats what i was thinkin, Warren over Lavelle or even the Dish anyday.

how long till
Hey guys, does anyone know the tracklist to this?>
pops up?

#725424Post 23 of 148

Re: Nick Warren - GU 31 Paris

Nick Warren's Shanghai and Reykjavik have been breaths of fresh air in the recent GU stable. I dig. Sure his mixing might not be the best around, but those two comps had sweet tunes. I'm anticipating Paris. See what he comes up with.

[edit: and for a DJ who doesn't mix well and play for the 'masses,' he definitely knows how to work the floor.]

Yeah and fuck Lavelle and Deep Dish.

anyone else confused as to how this guy is still doing cds? i thought he said he was 'retiring' after Reykjavik...

#725466Post 30 of 148

Re: Nick Warren - GU 31 Paris

he changed his mind... and realized his career is hinged upon making whimsical compilation cds every few years on a dying notion of "underground"

Re: Nick Warren - GU 31 Paris
Has Sean Cusick ever put a cd out?
doubt he ever will. they guy is more of a dj than anything else. no regular dj's get requests to do mix cd's anymore...you have to produce along with dj'ing. Go read the article in RA with Paolo Mojo and he talks a lot about that.

Re: Nick Warren - GU 31 Paris

Why are the same things said everytime a new GU is released. Personally I have gave up on that series a long time. Unless digweed comes out with a new Gu, I could care less who does the next GU.

#725575Post 34 of 148

Re: Nick Warren - GU 31 Paris

^^^ I'll have to agree with that.

But, I'd like to think there is another decent compilation series besides EQ balance.

Re: Nick Warren - GU 31 Paris

... here's the great thing about personal choice, you don't have to buy the cd if you don't want to. (of course these same people who bitch about nick/gu etc will just end up downloading it via soulseek or a torrent anyway.. you know, just to "listen" to it first to see if it's "worth" buying..)

but yet here we are again. if you haven't been able to figure by now that he's not the tightest mixing dj on the planet then you're either deaf or stupid. yet this becomes a discussion point every single time his name comes up... let it go. what nick lacks in mixing skills he more than makes up for in track selection and his ability to rock a dancefloor. shit, just on the sheer amount of quality production he and jody have put out year after year after year he gets a free pass in my book. i guess i'm just getting tired of reading the same shit over and over... we're an edm board and different people have different tastes but we all support basically the same thing. i'm not bitching at anybody in this thread nor am i kissing nicks ass just trying to keep things in perspective... actually, i was going somewhere with this and just forgot... fuck. anyway, love or hate gu they have been good for the edm community.

I agree with you man, but i've never been in one of these discussions about GU and nick warren so if I offended anyone with my opinion my bad. I don't spend every waking hour on this forum so therefor I haven't seen every thread. I am not not however one to use soulseek , in fact I never have used it or any other pirating source. I've pretty much owned every Nick warren cd that has been put out, multiple times. and for something to be a "mixed" compilation I guess i expect something different. Like I said before i ws just stating my opinion.

Matter of fact I think I witnessed him"bringing it" at WMC in 2000 at the Twilo tent , if I'm not mistaken. but yeah he definitley doesn't "suck". He's been pretty integral in the EDM history. theres just a few things like I said before but , whatever.

I think that is probably why he went to renaissance. as they are more respected these days for the quality of cd's they put out.
