Re: Balance 010 - Jimmy van M

i don't agree with clint actually. i've had this mix now for a couple months. it's something that IS timeless because it doesn't grab you on first, second or fifth listen. it's something you grow with and notice different parts at different times. the second disc for me is incredible. now i'm not a fan of vocals but the way jimmy is able to capture so many styles in a fluid way on disc two amazes me. the i-cube tune has such an amazing bassline and the way its mixed in is just so nice and bobby. there are songs i maybe would have left off or put in other areas, but this is something totally different than just a mix cd of dance tunes. but i will agree that not everyone will get it, and not everyone will want to get it. fair nuff, jimmy made something that span generations of listeners and he did that very well.

^^^^^^^^^^ do you like this one more, less or the same as his bedrock cd?

i think bedrock is an absolute classic 8)

Re: Balance 010 - Jimmy van M

well i only really like his first disc of bedrock. its pretty much the most perfect mix i had come across. i still love that disc as much as i did when it came out.

never got into the second disc as much, where his balance is interesting the whole way thru. there are songs im not keen on in there, but everything is mixed so quickly you really only get dabbles of the tune and then its off into something else. i really think disc 2 is incredible and the 3rd disc is up there as well. he really starts going on the 3rd mix, but never gets above 126 bpm.

i like what jimmy did here, and its something i'll go back to.

so when does it grab you then.... & why does it take so many times listing to till it grabs u.

timeless to me is something that you hear the first time and it just amazes you and keeps getting better and better with each additional listen and time....

well i can't say when its going to grab anyone, i'm just saying from how i got into it. takes a few times because its a 3 disc mix. i listened to the first and second disc while making and eating dinner a few times, had the uptempo mix on while i worked out. i've listened in different environments. maybe that helped me.

timeless to me isn't something you get right away. a catchy mix or tune is something you get right away cus its all there for you to get. things you can grow with will be things you listen to over time. at least for me. i don't buy into the catchy stuff. its very disposable.

i'm not telling anyone they have to enjoy this mix, i'm just saying how i've enjoyed it.

Maybe I spoke too soon. There are many cd's I own that took several listens for me to really get into and appreciate them. I suppose I thought his midtempo disc would be more like your warmup mix for the transitions tour, so at first listen I wasn't too captured. I'll give the first 2 discs a few more listens and comment more about it later. In the meantime disc 3 is pumping in my truck.

I totally agree with you on his bedrock cd. Disc one is still one of the best cd I've ever heard. Disc two however didn't have the same effect.

:D you never know.

listen to the second disc having a nice meal. i had a fire going last nite, had salmon and mash and salad, and oozed into the mix.

Re: Balance 010 - Jimmy van M

How many of you were hoping this would be another Bedrock Compiled and Mixed type album? How many of you still refer to Jimmy Van M circa 2002 when considering his talent and comparing his work?

Quite a show of hands I feel - maybe that's why some of you aren't feeling this as it's totally seperate from anything he's done previously and a project in it's own right, and not a follow on/continuation of the progressive golden era.

Re: Balance 010 - Jimmy van M

did i hear the word timeless tossed around when describing this mix? i'm not one for the prog house hype, but i need to check this out!

Re: Balance 010 - Jimmy van M

wow some really interesting feedback on this topic.... i need to buy this to see how it affects me. what overall syle is the mix? i mean i know that he did the downtempo midtempo uptemo deal but what genre is the majority? is it that minimal sound everyone seems to talk about lately

Re: Balance 010 - Jimmy van M

hulk - defo. seamlesssssss jimmy mixing. ouuf.

balance -

first disc - very earthy mild and mellow. ambient bits and spaced out beats. very unobtrusive and something even the older generations can enjoy.

second disc - starts out where first disc left off. mellow beats, sublime textures and some weirdness that floats into some nice mellow minimal beats. this is where the i-cube comes in. it gets weirder and a bit funkier as it goes along and closes out with a song you can sing a long to.

third disc - starts where the second left off with good heady sounds and textures but picks up and gets quite techy and twisted when oliver lieb shows up. that in turn changes the mix into a more dreamy proggy minimal mix with dabbles of vocals and nice bottom grooves.

hope that helps.

check out the tracklisting to get a better idea imo. it does sound really good.

Ditto. I was really hoping to buy this today as a digital copy...as I did for Transitions the day it was released in the USA. I hate waiting on the post!!

Re: Balance 010 - Jimmy van M

I still have not ordered this yet but I was looking around on the web and it looks like the release was pushed to mid-November. I wonder why.

Re: Balance 010 - Jimmy van M

i finally got my copy, after waiting a month(damn amazon.com pushed back the release date on me). really diggin this mix, it is very mellow and i expected that from what i have been reading. i like the uptempo disc of course. really good tracks, midtempo is a good cd, just wish it took off a bit sooner. just finished the downtempo disc(the last one i listened to), not bad at all. the first two cds of this album will definently become the after clubbing soundtrack. the third disc has a good energy to it, just wish there was more uptempo stuff(ie a fourth disc, could be overkill though). JVM has made quite the album out of this one. FUCK YEAH.

#759043Post 140 of 148

Re: Balance 010 - Jimmy van M

I dug it too...CD2, then CD3, then CD1. CD2 is filled with so many fantastic tracks...with each listen I discover new elements. CD3 for me is a typical JVM warmup set...tension builders & teasers throughout. CD1 has it's place...long drive home or loungin in the house after a hard night out.

All three have been growers for me...

thank you! jimmy is a star!

btw. my favorite mix is the 2nd disc and i am not someone who is incredibly keen on vocals. but jimmy does them right. i really like from after the cocteau twins tune onward.. incredible build. wow. the third disc is also very cool. the mixing is immense.

Re: Balance 010 - Jimmy van M

I've been listening to Disc 3 in the car the past couple of days, enjoying it, pretty mild for an upbeat set, but I really like it

 • btw, I think the Bedrock sets are far more impressive than these, true classics

Re: Balance 010 - Jimmy van M

I gave disc 2 a few more listens, and I really like it now. I was expecting something different the first time around, but now it makes sense.

Re: Balance 010 - Jimmy van M

yeah i have to say these cds are really growing on me. CD 2 is really good, especially the last 4 tracks. Too Much Love is a fuckin awsome track, would love to play this maybe a little faster in the beginning of a set. CD3 is a damn good set too. CD 1 is great for after the club or when i really want some chilled out shit..

and of course the mixing is absolutly flawless. JVM has always been one of the smoother mixers.

Re: Balance 010 - Jimmy van M
So... let me be the first one to be really disappointed with this album.:|

"Uptempo"-Disk? He must be joking. The only tracks one could really dance to are tracks 5-8. Thats an amount of 4 uptempo-tracks in CD #3.

CD2 is full of average music, lots of melodies included. Haven?t listened to Disk 1 though. I?m afraid I could fell asleep.

So after my disappointment with Masiello and Mojo I won?t buy any Balance-CD until I first listened to it via Soulseek...

Just my 2 cents...
...oh how time fixes things... look at my statement one year ago..

Now I must truly admit that I listen to this CDs, especially part1 and part2, more than regularly. Both parts are perfect for afternoon or a smooth dinner with a glass wine or two. And if my parents are visiting, this is the music that?s being played.

I want more of this :what:shock:8)

Re: Balance 010 - Jimmy van M

^^^^^ Know exactly what you mean. This has happened to me heaps of times. Alot of the good stuff people on this board listen to takes more than a couple of listens to sink in. Sometimes you've got to pay attention to the tunes for them to sink in if you get what I mean.

Re: Balance 010 - Jimmy van M

in my humble opinion i really do not think this is that great. there are soo many tracks on the first 2 cds i had in my collection for a long time. i was disappointed. i listen to a lot of ambient mixes and i have heard tons i think are better. the music is very good, but they are tracks from major labels... so yea i liked the music, but i was hoping for music i havent already heard dozens of times. if you want more music like this PM me... i have a lot you may like... i help run bsides on proton... and almost all the mixes go through me... so i can sort you out with some great stuff :D

and this is not to be mean or anything, cause the music is good... i just hoped for more out of JVM
