Re: Balance 010 - Jimmy van M

I've heard the compilation a few times, since I've had a promo for two weeks now. Short version: I liked it a lot.

It is three discs. Disc one is "Downtempo". There are beatless sections and others with slow laidback beats. Many of the tracks are from the mid 90s, from Future Sound of London, Boards of Canada, Laika, Coldcut and Union Jack. It's a nice chill mix. There are a few good vocal tracks.

Disc two is "Midtempo". Think of it as a warmup set. You could dance, or not. You can't dance to the early Cocteau Twins and Speedy J tracks, but you can dance to the later Aphex Twin, LCD Soundsystem and Saint Etienne. Nicely chosen and mixed.

Disc three is "Uptempo". This is the peak time set. It begins with two versions of Djuma Soundsystem's "Les Djinn". Everybody's heard the wicked Trentemoller remix already, I'm sure. The mix is on the techy side, and it's nearly all new tracks, not like the other Balance discs, which take older tracks. It has Ellen Allien and Apparat's "Jet", surely a track of the year, Tom Pooks "Docker", and some other good ones like Gui Boratto's "Like You".

If you want to replicate a club night, listen to disc two first, disc three next, and disc one last. But 1, 2, 3, works too.

Can't really compare it to Chris Fortier, since all of those discs were uptempo. I can say I like it more than Desyn Masiello's or Paolo Mojo's. I liked those discs, but this one is better.

Hope that enlightens you, and whets some appetites.

I?ve ordered the last few Balance-CDs from down-under, the longest time I had to wait was about 2 weeks, the shortest was about 5-6 days (to Germany). Album is on the way since yesterday....

Cheers, Chatter

Re: Balance 010 - Jimmy van M

it's alright. have been listening to it off and on for the part few weeks and would rate it between a 7 and 8. cd 3 is the standout disc, with the other two just average warmup discs. plenty of good tracks on the two but most i had already heard countless times and the way they were mixed was nothing ground breaking. palo mojo is still the best balance since holden by a longshot.

Be prepared to wait for ever for it as well. Everytime I order balance cds from amazon I always have to wait an extra 3-4 weeks after the release date.

Totally agree. Had it just over a week now and IMO the best is cd3 then 2 then 1

I've listened to all 3cd today getting ready to see him play tonight.

From the few live sets flying around and the review from my mate from melbs I'm expecting something special!

7hrs and counting!!

Re: Balance 010 - Jimmy van M

So... let me be the first one to be really disappointed with this album.:|

"Uptempo"-Disk? He must be joking. The only tracks one could really dance to are tracks 5-8. Thats an amount of 4 uptempo-tracks in CD #3.

CD2 is full of average music, lots of melodies included. Haven?t listened to Disk 1 though. I?m afraid I could fell asleep.

So after my disappointment with Masiello and Mojo I won?t buy any Balance-CD until I first listened to it via Soulseek...

Just my 2 cents...

Re: Balance 010 - Jimmy van M

Good luck find them on soulseek. I want to listen to this before I buy b/c I keep hearing mixed reviews about but I think I am just going to buy and judge for self unless some kind of miracle happens I do get to listen to it first.

Do you know if this will be available on beatport, djdownload, etc.? CD's are kind of a waste for me personally.

Agreed. Masiello and Mojo's ones were terrible. I wont be getting JVM's because I'm sure it will be the same. The balance series should take a close look at itself. Prog heads have sworn by it since the downfall of GU.

If I were the good folk behind the series I'd start getting some cutting edge DJs back on board.

Slightly OT, but does anyone know where I can find (or have a recording) of the set he played at Pacha, BA, that plays on his site?

It's really good.

Re: Balance 010 - Jimmy van M

Got this in the mail today and I have to say I'm a bit disappointed also. The first two cd's are great for what they are, but just not what I had in mind. The music doesn't really stand out. It shines at times, but a release like this should be more interesting and groundbreaking. Nothing too special on the first two discs. The third disc is very good and almost makes me wish this album would have only been one disc. If Jimmy wanted to do three discs, he shouldv'e followed Fortier in his approach. 1 very good disc out of 3, makes this album average. It's still a good purchase, but I can assure only the third disc will get play time out of me.
