Only 37% of young Americans can find Iraq on a map - though U.S. troops have been there since 2003.

6 in 10 young Americans don't speak a foreign language fluently.

20% of young Americans think Sudan is in Asia. (It's the largest country in Africa.)

48% of young Americans believe the majority population in India is Muslim. (It's Hindu?by a landslide.)

Half of young Americans can't find New York on a map.

Three-quarters cannot find Indonesia on a map ? even after images of the tsunami and the damage it caused to this region of the world played prominently across television screens and in the pages of print media over many months in 2005.

The majority of the American young adults overestimate the total size of the US population and fail to understand how much larger the population of China is.

Three-quarters believe English is the most common spoken native language in the world, rather than Mandarin Chinese.

Only Two-thirds (67%) can find Louisiana on a US map and half (52%) can find Mississippi ? leaving a third or more who cannot find these states, in spite of months of intensive media coverage of the 2005 hurricanes and their aftermath.

That one is definitely wrong. It is 6 out of 10 Americans don't speak English. I live in S. Florida and no one here speaks a lick of English.
Are you concerned by the statistics, or just bashing the U.S.?
I just thought those stats were pretty shocking yeah.

Anyway, according to other statistics the majority of kids in primary schools in Brussels think milk comes from cardboard boxes instead of cows. Same tupidity, other place...

(and I don't need stats to bash the US :p )

Re: Poor America...

but questioning 500 people from a population of 260 million is hardly represnetative is it;

the states is SO huge that idea's/knowledge/experiences can change within a short geographical area - and the cities VS rural (urban/rural) differnces are so marked;

however even those americans that can identify indonesia on a map still dont know anything about it! hehee

Re: Poor America...

dont help that they sample people from the inner cities or the ultra rural areas.. neither have the highest populations of intelligent people.. and these views coming from europeans... well look back and the french riots, the spainsh basque situation and the fact that a commie was just elected in italy......go figure they cant even control thier own population and call the ""resistance"" their way of showing that they are free. keep on burning.

Sorry to bust your balls, but the minimum population to make a sampling valid is 400 people...

Hey, be glad they ONLY asked 500, the results could've been worse

National Geographic actually, but hell, what do they know right? 8)

And btw:

 • french riots  riots in LA
 • commie (actually a socialist) elected in Italy  Bush in the US
 • As for the Basques... Yeah well, you have to have a LITTLE bit of national history to that shit going...

Re: Poor America...

I think the reason the world likes to publicize ridiculous statistics about the US is because the United States is the most powerful country in the world, and with Power comes great responsibility and Frame of Mind to use /control it. With that being said, we'd expect at leat 80% of the US population to be educated to a minimum high school level.

But when numbers like that pop out, its a little shocking to the entire world. Same reason why people like to read up on dirty secrets about Actors / Actresses. They're perfect on the image they display on screen but its the negativity that makes the world realize, they're just like everyone else.

There are stupid people all over the world, but it means sooooo much more when they're American. Do we care if little Belgium kids can't find Estonia on the map?? No. Why should we?? :what

Exactly. You gotta at least know where the country you're at war with is.
I'll take the latter.

It doesn't mean so much more because the stats are about Americans, the shock factor is in the figures. As someone else stated earlier, we've all heard silly stats like this about all our countries.

Re: Poor America...

i cannot believe some of you are trying to defend this???

it's a fucking disgrace in anyone's books surely. if i heard shit like this about my country i'd be embarrased not trying to defend it.

my view is that America is seen by most of the world, and i would wager by a fair proportion of american citizens, as some kind of self-appointed world leader. If you lot sat in your corner of the world and did your bisiness then fine, but when you're waging wars in other countries you should fucking well know where they are.

Re: Poor America...

^^^ Not worth the fight. I can take you to areas here that the people are fuckn stupid. Its the lack of parenting that these kids are idiots. These dumbasses rather watch Mtv than study for school.

Most people who visit America from overseas, love it so much that they want to move here. The average person to talk shit about the United States is usually by someone who has never been here.

i've been to the state many times and love it. but it scares me at the same time. most of the people i've met in the states are shall we say "world wise" and that can be said of everyone on this or most other boards by virtue of the very fact that they are online and interacting with people outside their little bubble. what scares me about the states is how many people are so massivly unaware of the world around them.
