Re: Tiesto sticks it to Toronto

I´m going against myself here, but still, I´d like to say it´s funny how Tiest/Trance threads here usually rack up 4, 5 or 6 pages. Personally, if a thread is about something I dislike I ignore it.

I wonder if DQ was a guy if people would thread so lightly on her opiniaos.
I wonder if DQ was a guy if people would thread so lightly on her opiniaos.
The thing about Karen is she doesn't "bash" other dj's and genre's of music and also isn't coming here declaring trance and/or tiesto (or any other dj for that matter) to be the "greatest thing on earth", "end all be all" or "number one" etc. She's merely saying she enjoys the music (trance), some dj's who spin it as well as other types of electronica/dj's. So the simple answer is yes, i would go lightly on anyone else who was able to convey their thoughts on a particular subject in an articulate and intelligent manner as she is able to do. That, and I think it's utterly and completely ridiculous that anyone should have to defend something they like/enjoy.... music or otherwise.

Fair enough. I actually agree with you, it?s just that I?ve seen some rather fierce bashing of music and DJ?s here, but when it?s her everyone seems apologetic. You probably got the right angle. Carry on...

Re: Tiesto sticks it to Toronto

to be honest with you all i actually know alot of people who like this kind of trance and they are very good freinds and although personally i dont like it myself i think its important to respect the fealings of the people who actually do, over on another forum i goto we regularly take the piss out of tiesto and to be honest the guys there that like him ( also AVB ) dont take it to heart and they see it as a form of entertainment as i thought taking the piss out of tiesto on this board would, it sounds sad but sometimes it can be fun. As much as i like to do this i think its important to respect other peoples fealings MALE OR FEMALE, the thing about this was that someone got upset by it so we/i stopped it like i would if anyone else got upset again MALE OR FEMALE.

Re: Tiesto sticks it to Toronto

I have one last thing to say in this thread, and then please, can a mod lock it so it will just go away.

People say that I am too emotional and to passionate about things I love, and who knows, maybe that is a fault with me as well. I am a person that will always give anything a chance, especially in music, and will never bash someone for creating a part of themselves to share with the world. Sure there will be music I will not like an sure there will be the odd track here and there I will say I hate, but I will never fault someone for that.

When a dj like Tiesto or Sasha puts on a show or releases a track they know they aren't going to please everyone...and they have to learn to accept it and move on as people in today's society are so quick to judge and criticize. People don't stop to think that these are people to...people who will make mistakes, who have feelings, who put hours of work into a song, who are performing a JOB, and who are no different then themselves. No one is perfect....everyone at one point or another in their lives will screw up, it is impossible not to. I could never be a DJ in a million years as I don't have the ear for music, the courage to perform in front of millions of people, or the strength to handle the ridicule they endure. I would love to see the people that bash the top 5 dj's in the world attempt to do what they do and never screw up....I can bet that would never happen.

I am not here to cause trouble or cause such a stink like this thread and a few other trance threads have caused. I know this is a primarily house forum, and I love house...that is why I joined here in the first place. I guess I just thought that overall it would be a forum where people could talk about all styles of electronic music and possibly learn like on several other forums I am part of, where people talk about all genres and rarely ever attack another dj/style.

Anyways, I have said my piece and I thank all of you that said kind words in this thread about me, they did not go unnoticed or appreciated.

Re: Tiesto sticks it to Toronto

You have the right to listen to any DJ or music you like, and the right to hold or express any opinion no matter how misguided or plain wrong.

I will support your right of opinion and expression, but i reserve the right to point, laugh and ridicule anyone for their opinions. After all this is a democracy that some of us live in.
Karen, don't take any of the trance bashing to heart, people attack the things that scare them and things they don't understand, for me Tiesto ticks these boxes. ;)

I know it';s not big or clever but i reserve the right to point and laugh at you for liking Tiesto and his sort of music.

Yikes, thats a lot of heavenly sounds. I dont think any of us mean to offend, but the point that really aggrevates me, which I thought was the reason for this thread, is the high ticket prices. Its not like its a 3-day festival with 100 Dj's or a private boat party that S&D are playing on. Its just one headliner from the Netherlands and some local Djs. $60-$75 is a lot of bread for one man.

Re: Tiesto sticks it to Toronto
$60-$75 is a lot of bread for one man.
I'm guessing that the response will be something like...

'Then don't go. There will be plenty of us there that are willing to pay $75 per ticket to see Tiesto. Without people like you there it means that there will be that much more room to wave our glowsticks, trade candy, and have cuddle puddles. Not to mention that there won't be people like you hogging all the pills.'

Let's see how close I am.

I hate when the music stops at trance parties they look at the dj with their arms in the air like he is a god.. kind of freaky IMO..

QFT

And then there is the DJ - Trance DJs also throw their hands in the air during a break down and expect everyone to look at them like gods. The fans are only too happy to comply, scary doesn't even begin to describe it

no sh1t, it is weird and wrong in many ways. i mean, i dont like trance... but it is hard to produce music in any genre imo (some harder than others). how can the foolish dj's raise their hands to something they didnt make and demand admiration. then on top of that have these silly fans think these dj's are gods for mixing other peoples music. have some humility, you are getting paid for playing peoples records that they spent hours on and got paid sh1t for.

i was at a sasha show few weeks ago, and some dude turned to me and just pointed up and just shook his head and said "amazing". i like sasha, and traveled far to see him then... but jesus...
And then there is the DJ - Trance DJs also throw their hands in the air during a break down and expect everyone to look at them like gods. The fans are only too happy to comply, scary doesn't even begin to describe it
lol. there was a local dj (when i lived in detroit) who was the king of this. if anyone has ever seen kenneth thomas play, his hands are in the air above his head way more then they are on the mixer. with every cord change he has to shake a fist or wave his arms like it's actually his arms that are responsible for the chord change, not the record. but, this evidently works, because who is he now opening for across the states? you guessed it, the lord and savior - paul oakenfold himself.

KT i'd like to give you something that you should put right next to your horrible trance records.

to be honest i,ve seen higher ticket prices for raves and big events over here but usually when tickets are that high they put on a big show with lights, entertainment fairgrounds and a whole load of dj's who play different styles ( in different tents )...would i pay that 2 see maybe one or 2 dj's for a couple of hours @ a time?

FUCK NO....man i saw pink floyd for less than that

Re: Tiesto sticks it to Toronto

I just have to throw this in there. There's some trance out there I like, hell I'll be the first person to argue that lots of what Sasha was playing at Twilo was trance. Shit he dropped a shitload of BT and PVD tracks in those days. I'll even listen to a bit of it nowadays, as my wife is a fan of some of em. I even saw Tiesto before most of the world knew him when he was tearing up dancefloors in Israel frequently (pre-2000).

....but here's my huge gripe with trance djs today: For some reason of all the sets I listen to (or tracklists I've seen), there's a lot less variety in the tracks that a particular trance dj will play from one night to the next. There's less variety between the tracks that different trance djs play, with the exception that each individual trance dj has a good number of their own tracks or remixes that only they play. I rarely have seen a house or techno or electro or just about any other genre set that every single track has been identified the second that the dj drops the track.

So let me ask...

Are the trance fans just so much more knowledgeable of the genres tracks than in house/electro/etc? This I seriously doubt...

Are there just so few "good" trance tracks out there right now that the djs don't have much of a choice?

and just to add one small defense of em, I've noticed over the last few years that many of the djs are now dropping many tracks that many house/progressive/electro djs play and many of the artists that so many people here love...just from tiesto's in search of sunrise latin america (my wife bought this), how many people hate these artists: Tonedepth & Sultan, Wighnomy Brothers, Tilt (Dousk remix), Luke Chable, Matthew Dekay or Grayarea?

Now I'll grant you, trance isn't really my sound (I feel it lacks the depth of many other genres), nor is a trance kiddie crowd my kinda thing (no offense to anyone here, but in NYC their crowd is very much this sort). People just need to lighten up a little...kinda like Tiesto:

Re: Tiesto sticks it to Toronto

I figured that would be the reaction I would get, but if you actually read what I said, I never said I loved trance, nor even like it. I did say my wife enjoys some of it (as well as plenty of house/prog/trip hop/etc.) and yeah there are a few tracks every now and then I'll enjoy.

A lawyer by trade, I do like to defend people so merely for argument's sake I posed some questions with a little bit of history. If you're not man enough to admit you used to listen to trance or that some of your favorite djs have played trance tracks in their sets (ie. Deep Dish were dropping PVD's The Other Side for quite a good deal of last year), well what could I say, but they did and do.

So let me ask: Who here wasn't a fan of Sasha back in 98-99 when he was playing trance? Who thinks he doesn't have trance elements still and that's one of the things people secretly love about him. Everybody loves his melodic tracks...call it by a different name and feel better about yourselves. Whatever helps you feel better about yourselves.

Now who here's willing to actually address something I actually said, rather than just name-calling?

Please discuss.

actually thats a very good point, in those days sasha would hammer songs by LSG ( oliver lieb ) and guys like PVD and i dont know about all of you but i,m still a big fan of the melodic side of basically everything but i,m not getting/fealing this in the current state of trance, for me its moved on from its routes and is going on a whole new "euphoric" route, as a guy who was brought up with the hardest of rave values for a long time this kind of upsets me but i realise that this is actually good for the scene as things always branch off from something new and goes into something else, so i can understand it, i think the main problem here is that the people that slate it or slag it are getting old and have also been brought up with the old values accociated with the house scene, i hold my hands up and say i,m deffinately one of those people, i was just one of those guys where the "selling out" factor was a big no no, things have changed, the music used to be about nothing but passion but the big players are now older and to be fair to them its there only way of earning a good income so maybe a bit of the passion has left the scene due to people trying to live a comfortable life doing what they do, you can look @ the dance scene from many different angles now. For me the only guy in trance @ the moment who gets close to feeding my passion for the trance scene has to be Christopher Lawrence, listening to his sets remind me of how underground it used to be....nowadays it doesnt matter where u look in the dance scene you will find elements of all types of all types in all types ( wouldnt like to say that drunk lol )...i just like to hear the stuff i liek to hear now, its as simple as that...:|...in all honesty i dont like what i,ve become as i got aolder because i have turned into a complete music snob

#633175Post 115 of 117

Re: Tiesto sticks it to Toronto

Well if it wasn't for "trance" i wouldn't be doing what I'm doing now... as one of the "elder" statesmen (if not the eldest) on this board it was Sasha, Oakey, PVD, etc playing tunes like Energy 52's "Cafe' Del Mar", Binary Finary, Cygnus X, PVD's "Pumpin" back in the early to mid-nineties that got me rolling (literally) on the whole electronic bandwagon. I went from being the typical local "club" DJ to not ever wanting to spin "mainstream" radio dance music ever again. Now I never was a fan of the 138bpm plus "eurphoric" trance which sounded as if you were trapped on a circus merry-go-round but tunes like Kamaya Painters "Far From Over" and BT's "Embracing The Sunshine" were and still are favorite tunes of mine.... Crap, I still love PVD's "For An Angel" and Tilt's "Invisible" because it takes me back to a time when it really was about the music and not everyone and their sisters boyfriends cousins friend was a DJ. basically days that I know I'll never relive.

This smacks of sheer greed - my understanding is that Tiesto currently charges outrageous appearance fees (even in Eastern Europe), so its no wonder he's jetisoned his Cream (Ibiza) residency - even the super clubs can't afford to pay him ! However, I thought his Amnesia essential mix from last year was excellent (real summer music - opening with a corker from Kosmos Epsilon), its just a shame he's shafting his fans, which is pretty bad for EDM as a whole regardless of your progressive loyalties.
