Sasha booed in Lisbon

So last saturday Sasha played in Portugal for only the 2nd time ever, in a dance music event called Love2Dance...the bill was him, Sander, Lowend Specialists and Luca Ricci.

It?s funny that ever since I heard about the event, I wasn?t too excited about it and actually decided a long time ago I wouldn?t go. My sister told me she?d get me in for free on the night and I still didn?t want to go...thank God for my premonition...

Reports I?ve been reading in Portuguese forums call the Sasha set "boring, too deep, too ambient, no groove and no joy in it at all"...well basically proving my point that whatever differs from the old conga and dark drums shit isn?t accepted here. The result...most people didn?t even dance at all to his stuff, and at a certain point massive boos started echoing throughout the arena.  :x

Personally, I?ve heard a different report from a friend whose musical taste I trust in...he called it "the man was throwing pearls to swine"...he?s telling me that Sasha played an "old school" set...back to his melodic and hypnotic roots. Shame I didn? see it, but I would have had to bring a flamethrower with me to see Sasha in a place full of numbnuts.

Final point : Sasha could have followed the easy and trusted path of adapting to the crowd, instead he played what he wanted and got booed for it. I believe in sticking to your guns, so more power to the guy, but Sasha, please, don?t ever play arena shows here anymore.

Anybody have a job for me abroad? I feel like getting the fuck out of this miserable country...

As a dj your job is to play to the people. I'm definitely a big sasha fan and I'm always curious to hear what djs can bring to the table but first and foremost you need to get the people moving.

A) He's rocked it out full on the last 3 times I have seen him this year.

B) I believe that you were 14 when twilo closed, and not yet even 10 years old when Sasha started playing there. If Sasha was playing a set like he has been in NYC recently, similar in style to his older sound, those who are there to hear it should feel lucky.

C) Did you just condone the booing of a DJ because they werent playing the style the crowd wanted to hear? (specifically when they werent fucking up?)

You are so grounded kiddo, I'm super Serial!

last time i saw him (last year), he was just O.K.

i added the imo at the end because i knew the usual sasha-can-do-no-wrong crew would be all over this thread, and i also knew you would come in here and mention his twilo days (and procede to play the age card). typical.

sasha does nothing for me these days, in fact his dj sets bore me to tears. this is my opinion.

A) Sasha can do wrong, I have heard it happen

B) I brought up the twilo days because this is where the his style he played at the aformentioned event has its roots and it was where he made a name and style all his own.

C) When and where have you heard sasha play "these days" and what are you comparing it to? Downloaded sets rarely translate to home listening with their original vibe and feel intact, so I would hope you arent going by those.

Although there is his terrace set, yum

D) The typical age card being played is because I am finding it difficult to determine when and what old sasha you are comparing current sasha to. Being that you have only been old enough to get into SOME events for about a year or so, let alone 21 and up shows, I am curious to see where this informed opinion is coming from. Please, enlighten me teen wolf.

I disagree entirely... have you ever looked around at who these "people" are and what they probably want to hear?

Also, having one's own style would be a moot point if you were merely trying to placate the masses, wouldnt it?

Re: Sasha booed in Lisbon

I guess I'm in the so-called Sasha-can-do-no-wrong crowd. Here's the thing: it is not some preconceived disposition I take, I simply find that he is consistantly the best dj. Take the WMC sets from Space. I honestly love Sasha's set, didn't think much of the others. I didn't force myself to like it, I just do. Don't see why it should be any more complicated than that. :NotMe:

============

In the event in question, I'm not so sure I agree with the stick-to-your-guns concept. While a DJ should stay true to his own particular style and sound, a large part of the DJs job is to move the crowd and if what you're playing is not working, you need to find what will work. It is all about the balance, never one or the other.

I don't know anything about Lisbon so I can't disparrage them, but I am sorry the night didn't work out. That said, one should not boo the entertainment for not playing what he wants to hear, there are many boo worthy things, but that is not one of them. Undoubtedly there were people there who where hearing exactly what they wanted to hear, but it was ruined by some drunken asshole booing in their ears.

The crowd over here is basically separated in 3 types : the majority, which is the people who attend mainstream events like this, likes the typical "portuguese sound"...funky, percussive, bass heavy and dark stuff, with tribal influences. For them DJ Vibe is God, his charts are the Commandments. This explains why a 2nd rate DJ like Luca Ricci was considered the "winner" of the night, with Sander Kleinenberg having great success too (but he?s not 2nd grade, he?s good, his sound is just right for these people). For you americans, I?d say that the New York sound typified by guys like Tenaglia and Calderone is very representative of this crowd and like all majorities, they?re blind and intolerant to anything else.

Then you have the minority, which is into the electro house sound, Tiga, Tiefscharz, Holden, Dahlback, Michael Mayer amongst others are their heroes and they never go to places like this, they all stay at the Lux club.

In between there?s the techno/schranz crowd, which is into DJ Rush and stuff like that.

Where does this leave Sasha? Nowhere.

Since he doesn?t have to know about this "musical food chain", he played what he believed his fans wanted to see, and like I said, the prog house lovers there said his set was amazing. So I believe that Sasha showed what an awesome professional he is, because even amidst a booing storm, he stuck to his style and showed how much respect he has for his fans, for the people that went there to see him in particular, by not going down the easy path.

I agree. I have seen the big name DJ's plenty of times, some hit and some miss, but I don't think I have ever seen anyone get booed. Well maybe James Lavelle but other than him I don't recall a crowd booing a DJ. I wasn't at this party so I don't know for sure and I guess anything is possible but it just doesn't sound like anything that you would see at a Sasha show or any "superstar DJ" for that matter.

Re: Sasha booed in Lisbon

Over here it was more just "go home" and "you suck", amidst booing and whistling: If you don´t believe it you´ve obviously never been to a latin country, or at least to a live music show in a latin country.

Re: Sasha booed in Lisbon

Kinetic - I didn't even know that people in Portugal liked EDM that much (please don't take that the wrong way, or as a slight on your Country) - on the plus side, at least Sasha didn't show the arrogance of Jose Mourinho by putting his finger to his lips like in your avatar ! Didn't you post about Dark Evil Sasha appearing in Portugal last year ?

Also, having one's own style would be a moot point if you were merely trying to placate the masses, wouldnt it?
A dj can have their own style and still appease the crowd. It's about extending the crowds tastes and playing tracks that might, if heard outside the set, fall beyond said crowds typical taste. That said, how difficult would it have been for him to play a few tribalesque tracks to get the crowd into night and then introduce them into new tracks or tracks that he personally found to be great? There is a lot of power up in that booth. You can change peoples perceptions of their own personal taste in music in mere few hours. Sticking to a preorchestrated set or ignoring the audience is not what the whole experience should be about.

But at the same time, someone with a name/draw like that shouldn't totally "have" to "play to the crowd." If it was a local/no-name type DJ, then sure, you don't do such, good luck finishing your set, much less coming back again.

I would think even if Sasha did do that to get the crowd going, the minute he switches off they become restless again; rather have it be the way it was done then to play up and down like that for the whole set.

Re: Sasha booed in Lisbon

Its common knowledge that Sasha hates those big shows anyway (although I'm sure the payday offsets this). He has always excelled in intimate, dark, sweaty and dingy clubs.

Re: Sasha booed in Lisbon

Given Sasha's stature in the dance music scene, he probably went up and played thinking the crowd is familiar with his music and style. He was there to deliver what a typical Sasha crowd would have expected. That's why there are all these big names at parties. Cos the organizers expect the names and their style of music, to bring in the respective crowds who do appreciate the music.

Sasha's probably more surprised than anyone else at the party. But given the tracks he had with him, he probably stuck to what he's been playing in recent times, as opposed to playing a set that went all over the place trying to please the crowd. I've heard DJs who begin a set with something in mind, failed, tried to reprogram the set, failed; and the night just went pearshaped.

Hey at the end of the day, you just can't please everyone.
