It has been 3 weeks since I quit cold turkey!

I'm glad that the hardest part is now over!

#233016Post 2 of 80

congratulations!

im not in that place yet unfortunately, ive tried to quit 5 or 6 times, never works out :evil:

but hey, they say on average it takes 8 times to actually successfully quit (so my roomie told me)

keep up the good work!

#233018Post 3 of 80

Good luck to you. I've never even tried to quit.

#233020Post 4 of 80

it seems like half the packs i smoke are my "last pack" then i get up and buy more on the way to work in the morning :roll:

i once quit for three months, and i remember walking outside and taking a deep breath in the cold winter air. it really felt great, but i am weak and i failed to keep it up.. you'd think after three months it would be easy to say no, but i am a sucker for peer pressure :oops:

#233026Post 5 of 80

last packs!! hahaha i've been on my last pack so many times, then my friends come back from greece with a carton and i say this is my last carton!

the only way to quit is cold turkey. well done Nigel. I will quit one day, just not today.

#233030Post 6 of 80

yeah I've never really tried to quit....I don't know I probably could I often go a few days without smoking.

Good job though man.

#233035Post 7 of 80

congrats! and good luck the rest of the way.

I have a mate who has been quitting since I can remember. I think he is just to cheap to buy any, he is always getting them from other people, lol. And they always ask, why dont you just by some? "Oh, I'm trying to quit" :lol:

#233039Post 8 of 80

ah yes, the shameful "if im not buying any, its more like im actually making an effort to quit" phase... bum bum bum until your friends wont give you any more cigs, and then you have to start buying them again :oops:

#233042Post 9 of 80

Good Luck.

Re:: Smoking cigarettes

Congrats on your 3 weeks- it's harder than any non-smoker will ever understand!!

It's been 4 yrs for me as of May- and I will NEVER start again!! I smoked since I was 14 & so that's 10 yrs. of my life I spent wasting my money & breath... My Dad is sick from Emphysema & he complains about feeling like someone is squeezing his ribs with every breath- There's no better deterrant than that.....

hmm...i can't say it's been 4 yrs since I've smoked greens though.. lol but that wasnt' what I was talking about... Was it??? :roll:

cause nicotine is the most addictive substance known to man. if ciggs were ever to become illegal, the black market price of a pack of camels would be rediculous.

So do you smoke youre joints pure or do you pack some tabacco in there too? I have a friend who smokes js and he says hes not addicted to cigs but yet every j he smokes has tobacco in. I know for a fact that the first thing he does when he gets home from work is light up. Id say he`s addicted to cigs but he says not. :NotMe:
It has been 3 weeks since I quit cold turkey!

What I can tell from my experiences is that the first three weeks are definately not the hardest. Hard yes but not hardest. First few weeks you have successes all the way...you can breathe more easily, climbing stairs does not hurt you anymore the way you were used to it and your clothes start to smell normal and so do you. Food tastes way better suddenly and the demon on your chest goes away too so no more cough cough cough while you brush your teeth in the morning. But after a month you reach a state where you can't see or feel any improvements and it's so that you just....don't smoke anymore. When I quit this was the hardest time because I started to feel empty again and looked with Envy at people who smoked which is ridiculous but part of the mental addiction which will keep you busy longer than a few weeks. It took some more months to get rid of this feeling but I don't smoke for nearly a year now and I did not regret it. I can't tell if I will never smoke cigarettes again as the ghosts of my nicotine addiction are still coming back from time to time. It's just that it is getting easier month by month so I look forward and hope that I will be finally really clean in a few years . :wink:

I served in the US Army and while I was deployed in Bosnia I took up smoking as a cheap buzz (light headedness) because they didn't allow us to drink at all and the rest is history.

#233221Post 22 of 80

Re:: Smoking cigarettes

hmm you should have dipped tobacca for a cheap buzz then all you have to worry about is gum disease :wink: :P :P

congrats on quitting though :)

Congrats Nigel! And good luck for the future.

I've cut back on it myself (most days I only have 1) but I'm not ready to give it up just yet.

Congrats!!! I quit 3 years ago, I don't even miss it anymore. :D

#233354Post 27 of 80

I stopped in 1997 after smoking 12 years. Last year I got one from a friend fust for fun. The first time a smoke had been in my mouth in 6 years. I smoked it up and that was it. I was addicted all over again and had a 6 month relapse. I managed to quit again now for 2 months. I had no idea how easy it was to get hooked all over again, even after 6 years. Once you decide to stop, NEVER and I mean NEVER let another smoke enter your mouth.

#233549Post 28 of 80

Re:: Smoking cigarettes

Waste of time, money, and effort. To desire something so badly that does so incredibly little is just.. pointless.

#233555Post 29 of 80

Very well done man, I'm fortunately I can quit when I decided to leave it, now I only smoke when I drink, or when I'm on E, in that case there's nothing better than a cigarette. Better smoke weed.

Re:: Smoking cigarettes

I agree with TomTom that the first three weeks are not the hardest. You're still enthousiast about quiting, you're still thinking "yes, another week of no smoking". But after 2 months, you start considering again a cigarette cause you forget the disadvantages.

I'm a very weird smoker. I've been smoking for three years, although I've never been extremely addicted. After those three years, I had a period of 2 months no smoking at all. But I had exams and I bought a new pack. The first cigarette tasted wonderful. But I urged myself not to smoke more than one ciagerette a day and yes, I did a few weeks with that pack. Now, I only smoke one, max. two ciagerettes during parties, but none in daily life. I know I'm never gonna quit for 100%, but I will never be the regular smoker from before. I have enough with a cigarette during a party. And I don't think this gonna affect my health.

Re:: Smoking cigarettes

congratulation man hope you can keep it up for a good period i smoke for some years, gave up a lot of times the longest time i gave up smoking was for eight months, but then again, i starded again, for differnt reasons of course all the time

#233742Post 34 of 80

I've not had a ciggie for 5 weeks now & I've cut right back on coffee also, I'm still getting the urge to smoke just @ work though when some knobhead does my head in, that's usually when I give in to a cup of coffee which is better than a ciggie.

i've stopped smoking since yesterday. i've been talking about it for a long time now i'm gonna do it. i smoked for 7years now. until this day. i'm stopping cold turkey but with some help:

"ZYBAN is the first non-nicotine, oral medication (a pill) that is FDA-approved as an aid to smoking cessation. While it is unclear exactly how ZYBAN works, it is thought to act on the part of your brain that is addicted to the ingredients in cigarettes. ZYBAN helps decrease your cravings and withdrawal symptoms and your desire to smoke."

#233929Post 37 of 80

nice. switch one for another. good luck pal. try to stay busy and listen to good choons. that is all i have to say that may help pass the painful time. let us know how it goes.

Re:: Smoking cigarettes

Nice work to those who quit. I stopped a year ago but then started studying for med school and have one every now and again. But when it's in Boston I just running and I hate how bad my lungs feel after a night out.

FYI - addiction is a "disease of the reward pathways of the brain" and nicotine is definitely one of the most addictive substances. My landlord is a doctor who doesn't smoke but ALWAYS chews nicotine gum. Ugh. I'm glad I could stop. I'll stop for good (no social smokes) when I am a doctor.

Re:: Smoking cigarettes

I quit smokeing about 3 years ago.. i hated smelling like it and i was always geting headachs.. would wake up feeling like shit most of the time too :(

#235499Post 40 of 80

^^ tomtom is right. wait about a couple months, then get drunk and go to a club. you are going to have a tough tough time saying no because 1) you're drunk 2) everyone else is smoking and the evil 3) you've been good for a while, one cigarette won't hurt.... WRONG! #3 gets you everytime. the cycle starts all over again. i'm happy to say i have only smoked 2 cigarettes in 3 months, but those two cigarettes i DID have definitely made me hurt for some more.

so suppress your desire to have a cig when you are out on the town. if you can do that, you are golden. :wink:
