OK, it's taken me nearly a day and half to calm down from this sooooo.... First off I don't want this post to turn into a debate about p2p (we've been over it a million times). Second, I should've and could've avoided this entire situation by keeping my mouth shut. Third, there may have been alcohol and jet lag involved.

OK, so I had the pleasant experience of flying to Mexico City this past weekend. I have a very good friend Victor who lives there who flew me down to headline his birthday party. Along with me there was a DJ from San Antonio and one from Mexico City. I hadn't seen Victor in about three years and was way stoked to hang out with him and his wife. I had a great flight (on Delta, which I NEVER fly) and upon arrival was blown away that he booked me a room at the W Hotel which is in the Polanco neighborhood of Mexico City (clean, sweet and trendy area). We caught up on life, had a nice dinner and then proceded to the venue. The opening DJ was a young kid from Mexico City who Victor had seen spin as an opener at a few local clubs and really liked him.... solid set. Nice progressive and deep house set. All vinyl and never got above about 125 bpm. The next DJ spun progressive house and was the one from San Antonio. Normally, I like the DJ before me to play a different style of music but it wasn't my birthday and I had no say. Anyway, he starts off with a few classics (Wavy Gravy, some Pole Folder) and then.... wham, it's the new Steve Porter and then the new Thomas Penton and then the new Walsh.... It's hard, bangin and you'd think Porter himself was up there playing.... Now I turn to Victor and ask "Am I the headliner?" cause at this point San Antonio dude has played a lot of my set and things, imo, can't be built much higher than they are now... Victor goes to said DJ and tells him to tone it down which he proceeds not to do.... An hour later it's my turn to hit the booth and my arrival is met with "one more tune" from said San Antonio DJ. After that it's "just one more tune".... and then "I have one more tune"... at which point I eject the "I have one more tune" from the CDJ and tell him he has "no more tunes". Now during this time we've been conversing about music and I ask him where he got his music from. He responds that he downloads his music... much like I do. I asked him where he got the new Penton tune and he says "soulseek". "And how about the new Steve Porter?"... "Soulseek" he says... and so on. I don't say anything.... At the end of the night after my set we're all hanging out and said San Antonio DJ, who at this point I find to be the biggest dickhead on earth, comes into the lounge where we are all hanging out. Now I should state that things from here on out are somewhat fuzzy but I do remember San Antonio DJ mentioning something about a Damian Heck song he's been playing that hasn't been released yet and that he got off of... you guessed it, soulseek. I asked him if he got paid for spinning tonight and he said yes and then, apparently, I went somewhat ballistic about how he's profiting from what he does yet not even buying the music that's making him money blah, blah.... He mentions something to me that it's better than playing the music I play from beatport etc and that he has the freshest music and this and that and then.... well, apparently I acted as if I was slashed behind the knees at my local hockey rink and in my somewhat alcohol altered state jumped the dude, pulled his shirt over his head and pummeled him badly... This morning my friend Victor emailed me and said all is fine and not to worry about what happened. I don't know though... I way overreacted but seriously I was PISSED. So here I type with swollen knuckles and a slightly bruised arm wondering if it was worth it.... And you know what? It was.

Punk ass bitch had it comin' imo. Although I'm not an advocate for violence, there are rare instances where it just might be the not-so-right thing to do. If your story is exactly how it went down then I agree with your decision and applaud your efforts. IMO it's one thing to d/l music for free but to be blatant and arrogant about it is another.

Re: So I had myself a fistfight at a gig....

IMO you should get a round trip flight to San Antonio and beat his ass again!!! I don't play clubs or anything remotely like that but it seems that if I was going to play clubs i would have legit music in my case or notebook.

Re: So I had myself a fistfight at a gig....

Very hairy situation.....I commend you for standing up for the artisit rights...those producers deserve to get paid for thier work....and soulseek should defienetly not be a Djs answer for free and unplayed choones. About the fight....not sure if violence is the best thing to resort to, especially at a club....kind of vibe kill. Did he get your opinion in regards to how you felt about him basically stealing the music before the fist flew?

Re: So I had myself a fistfight at a gig....

I agree with the no-fight situation.... defo could've been a peaceful resolve or even a forceful discussion.... I dont know ..... personally.... the older I get, the more I think knuckles and fists are an untrained way to voice an opinion .... don't get me wrong, it's not the chicken approach at all. You close your fists when you have to, but always keep your mind open.....

though its a good thing you stood up that way..... no matter how agressive

Re: So I had myself a fistfight at a gig....

this is the most entertaining dj story ive heard in a long time. you overreacted man.. atleast you didn't go at it right there in the dj booth. really..who cares where another dj gets their music from, its nothing to get bent over. And if hes playing before you, and rocking out and playing all your tracks... dont get pissy over it. you are a dj... djing is about adapting and stepping up. if hes banging it out, then carry off of it...or chill it out and build it back up to your own peak. theres a million ways you can handle it better than going and reminding the promoter you are the headliner.
however, he sounds like an ass just for trying to ride into your set time.. no dj should do that unless the dj after him is giving him that time... its just plain rude. And criticizing another djs music is a big NO NO no matter what...

Re: So I had myself a fistfight at a gig....

to me, it sounds like you chucked a hissy fit because another boy was doing more kick-ups than you.
in my somewhat alcohol altered state jumped the dude, pulled his shirt over his head and pummeled him badly
um...why'd you pull his shirt over his head? man if you would've done that to me i'd be too busy laughing to consider hitting you back.

don't go back to mexio, eh?

A. There's an art to being an "opening dj" and not the headliner..

B. Hockey reaction.... pull the sweater over the arms so they can't hit back.... you wouldn't have time to laugh. Don't get me wrong... this had nothing to do with what he played but rather how he came to get the tracks that he played and then his attitude about it afterwards. Stupid reaction yes but again, alcohol was a factor, it was 5am in the morning and the guy was a prick....

Re: So I had myself a fistfight at a gig....
who cares where another dj gets their music from, its nothing to get bent over.
I definitely think that answer would be different if it was your track he was playing that he ripped.

This weekend I spent $100 on vinyl that will more then likely never be used in public! I do this because I love the feel of vinyl and to support the dj's and the record store I purchased them from. It would be more advantageous from a money aspect for me to buy some new CDJs and burn all the tracks I want for free! But I don't because that is called theft!

IMO if you are going to put yourself in the scene as a DJ and play clubs then you better go buy the music!

Re: So I had myself a fistfight at a gig....
IMO if you are going to put yourself in the scene as a DJ and play clubs then you better go buy the music!
the people that don't support the scene don't last long and have no real future. Yea, maybe they will get some small scale gigs and perhaps even get a big $50 for the night, but when they try to advance further then that they will fail because they never showed support to anyone and nobody will be there to support them. While they are frustrating, your sense of pride should have taken over and realized you were a better person in general and wasting your time with such ignorant people only drags you down to their level.

For one, I care and Im sure Steve Porter and Thomas Penton would care as well.

ichrang, I think you missed the point of Geoff's rant. This music shouldnt be stolen blatently from Soulseek. The opening Dj should of gave these producers the respect they deserve by purchasing these tracks from an authorized retailer like Beatport or Release.

I totally diasagree with your statement. Im sure your music collection, like the rest of ours, is made up of tons of live sets that were downloaded for free and generally accepted by the producer / djs to be passed around for free as promotional material. Do us all a favor and support you favorite Dj by purchasing their copyrighted material from someone legit. Furthermore, support by favorite message board by donating. Im going to right now!

Re: So I had myself a fistfight at a gig....

The world is full of idiots. Why were you so surprised to meet one of them lol? I would have been more mad that he didn't play warm up sounds and even if asked refuses to than about the Soulseek thing. Those "released promo only"- mp3 jockeys won't make it anywhere anyway because they get the "newest stuff" but not the exclusive tracks or the ones you can find spending time on it and having your own little network after some years in the business so they play what everybody plays. As soon as they get some reaction and don't play at birthday parties but are booked in normal clubs regularly, they can't survive with downloaded promos anyway. You will never convince people who think getting music this way only is normal and also, in some countries it´s nearly "normal" for various reasons so maybe that guy asks himself now what happened.

I have no mercy with thim though and can understand it went under your skin..he will get over it. :p

Re: So I had myself a fistfight at a gig....
For one, I care and Im sure Steve Porter and Thomas Penton would care as well.
I've actually read an interview where Porter was asked how he would react to someone who said they had gotten all his tracks from Soulseek. And he said he wouldn't mind, as he doesn't really make his money from producing...he get's it from DJ'ing. Producing is just a way to get yourself more gigs.

I have known of sooooooo many dj's that were starting about the same time as I was. But I am one of the only ones left that I know of. And most of them probably never thought I'd last. But now I'm the one with a residency and working for a record label, and getting my productions out there.

It really does end up hurting the scene with idiots that only download music. I bet you that John Digweed would probably kick you off the decks if he knew that you only used Soulseek to get your music.

dude.... it was chuck norris not the riaa who, by the way, could give a rats ass about edm. anyway, what's done is done. my friend victor let me know he's on my side and i actually just had a reasonable conversation with the dj in question where at the end of it all i had a chance to make my point in a sober manner. and if you want an answer to the red bull question in another thread as to whether or not it gives you wings, it apparently gives you fists....

Re: So I had myself a fistfight at a gig....

i don't want to say if file sharing is wrong or not, but it's out there and there's not much to stop it. it's easy to for big DJs to say just buy it all, but they get loads of free promos because everyone wants them to play their music. not to mention, if they are successful, they can afford to buy everything.

i don't know how to solve this problem, but i don't think that 'choosing' to purchase based on moral principle is going to stop the majority of folks from getting whatever they can for as little as possible.

Re: So I had myself a fistfight at a gig....

^^ when money isn't being cycled into the scene it suffers badly.

see the current american club scene.

downloading a track to listen to in your car or on your pod is one thing, downloading with the intention of making money, is another.

theres already one great reason as a dj to buy tracks instead of downloading them off slsk.

320kpbs.

Re: So I had myself a fistfight at a gig....

I think your reaction was a bit over the top. Just be glad you didn't get arrested or worse. I agree that the idiot should pay for his music but what goes around, comes around and you can only hope he'll get his without you beating him. As someone said before you have more reason to be mad at the way he attempted to over play you.

Regarding downloading from soulseek. I do download tracks from ss to play out. Frequently when it hasn't been released yet and I really want it. Though once the track comes out I buy it. And if I can't find it I'll buy another track from the same producer, even if I don't like it. Sometimes I'll order a track online and since it takes a week to get here I'll also download it so I can start playing it without waiting. I spend ~ $400 a month on records.

It sounds like the guy was a total ass, but are you sure he wasn't doing the same?

Re: So I had myself a fistfight at a gig....

He was out of line for the set he played, how long he played, and his attitude, but he didn't deserve to get assaulted.

#568995Post 40 of 79

Re: So I had myself a fistfight at a gig....

^^ after our conversation today he has purchased music online but admitted, reluctantly, that the majority of his set was pirated music. my friend victor had seen him spin at a party in houston and really loved his music. the dj in question told victor he was hooked up with a bunch of producers and got "promo's" from them all the time when in fact he was downloading his music from soulseek. anyway, he was pissed i called him out on "being hooked up" and i was pissed he lied and stole music for his personal profit and then one stupid thing led to another... i'll admit i'm VERY opinionated when it comes to this subject but i wish the whole thing had never happened the way it did. it's all good now and hopefully this particular dj learned something. all i ask is if you're going to spin out for money buy your music...
