Dear Sasha,

I'm leaving you! This may come as a bit of a shock but I can't take this anymore. You're not listening to me, you're not doing the things that make me feel special anymore. What happen to the old Alex that I grew to love? All those special nights we spent together at Twilo, or how about that time you burnt yourself with your cigarette at 1015 in San Fransico right before you took the decks, we both giggled. How about Miami? Man we have had some fun every year at the conference haven't we? Remember a little tour called Delta Heavy? That's the Sasha that I want to be with. My old girlfriend thought I might be gay because I would rather spend time with you then her. You've met all my friends and I felt we were almost ready to take our relationship to the next level, but... you've changed. You are so cold to me now, you sound like a broken record (no pun intended) You use to be creative, innovative, shocking, amazing, I could go on but I don't want to waste anymore of you time. Now it just seems all you want to do is play on that fucking computer of yours and not notice what's going on. Don't be upset I'm sure I will give you another chance because you still mean a lot to me., but for now this is good bye.

Devon

P.S. Thanks for introducing me to John, I hope you don't mind but we have a date planned in Miami. Don't be jealous!

Re: Dear Sasha, (review 2/4/06 DC)

I think what devon is trying to say is that last night was the worst we have ever heard sasha. dj three had a great opening set, leaving sasha with a good vibe to work with. Sasha instead chose to fuck things up and play shity, cheesy, boring records all night long. We must all now decide to stop chasing the high of the sasha of yesteryears and deal with the fact that he wants to be a 2nd rate DJ setting up residensies at bullshit 2nd rate clubs like glow/fur. clubs that are designed for douchebags instead of people that want to hear good music. Sasha should cancel all dates and re evaluate things before playing again. I should have stayed home and watched the fights last night.

Sasha isn't the be all and end all of dance music FFS

I disagree with that. Sasha and Digweed are the guys we look up to in the dance community and we have a big problem if people aren't happy with their performances. If they aren't playing or making quality music then the scene will decline. Has the music gotten worse or is it Sasha that has declined as a DJ? Possibly the clubbers themselves may be progressing away from dance music. I'm not sure, but maybe it's many factors. Personally, I still enjoy his sets, but I've seen more people recently criticizing him and Digweed.

Re: Dear Sasha, (review 2/4/06 DC)

S&D are not the be all and end all I'm afraid, don't take it so seriously. It's music that's all - there are enough quality tracks out there by enough quality dj's to not worry about it.

It gets so inane hearing people slating him all the time, why do they feel the need to criticise all the time? Just because it's 'Sasha' that's probably why.

I guarantee you'll all be loving him and digweed again some time soon, he has always changed his style and 'educated' the dance masses IMO.

I kept hearing all the bad vibes and reviews about him in 2005, and I hadn't heard a sasha set in about 2 years - then I heard his EM from Maida vale, thinking it would be garbage according to the recent reviews. Instead I found it to be one of the greatest sets I've ever heard on the radio.

Re: Dear Sasha, (review 2/4/06 DC)

sorry to hear that, but still, sasha plays the best music for my ears:)

exactly, i've been hearing peeps slating Sasha for years, in the ealy 90's "he's just a boring garage DJ" or playing "stop/start sets" then in the late 90's he's a trance DJ", "Sasha's shit" "Sasha isn't what he used to be" funny how people who say that probably don't even know what he used to be, it's just a "cool" thing for these kids to slate Sasha, not realising he's done more for the scene and given careers to most other DJ's that they think it's cool to big up, (Digweed for instance?) than any other figure in modern dance music. Still an innovator and still Number 1.

Re: Dear Sasha, (review 2/4/06 DC)

A classic post - I'll reserve judgement until Mr Coe finally graces the UK with a performance. I just wish he and John would bite the bullet and crack the acetates out of deep storage. That Delta Heavy DVd had me pining for better times. The point for me is that if the latest productions are so poor, why not go back to the good old stuff and mic things up ?

Re: Dear Sasha, (review 2/4/06 DC)

Orlando Feb 05, and Essential Mix May 05 are two of the best sets he's ever done He rocked my world in Montreal June of 05 His set from Home Sydney on Annie Nightingale was great.

Has he fallen off? I guess if you guys say so....

Too much bitching around here... If you don't like something, fuck off and find something you do like, and then when you find it, post something POSITIVE about it, instead of something negative.

Example: Frisky just hosted 6 hours of Turkish up-and-coming DJs, there were 6 posts in the thread for it in GYY. The thread bitching about Sasha has reached 2 pages in less than an hour.

Fucking move on and show support to the rest of the vast world of music.

*Edit: sorry for the rant! phew Ah, that feels better :)

Re: Dear Sasha, (review 2/4/06 DC)

Good point Kobe - hopefully people will take it on board. I try to broaden my musical horizons, and if i don't like a particular set I will either not comment on it or try to constructively criticize if thats possible.

Since i've decided to give things a try other than prog I've been pleasantly surprised by some stellar sets from Luke Morrison, Yunus, Yvel & tristan, Micah, Digital Witchcraft, Mirel Jarca and DJ OlliS.

chem - good point about people saying 'he's not what he used to be' when they prob don't know what he used to be like anyway! I hadn't thought about it like that!

well Sasha played here with Lawler in the summer and blew Toronto away....awesome set, and I have also seen him 3 other times and he has never disappointed.

A dj is allowed an off night now and then......they are human too (shocking I know)

This is a fact....Daveman gave me the same review from the night a Crobar. Said Sasha didnt look at the crowd once, had his face buried in the monitor the whole night. Ive been a big fan for many years, but who wants to pay $30 to see that?

What? A DJ completely focused on what they're doing? Say like Digweed or PVD? That's insane!

Re: Dear Sasha, (review 2/4/06 DC)

sad to hear dc didn't go so well either. i really enjoy sasha's music and i have heard his sets through the years, but last friday at crobar, though each song was mixed really well, overall it was just all over the place. i had hoped it was an off night...

When you say he never looked at the dancefloor, maybe you wanted him to act like this guy?

Anyway, it says in the title that this was a review...to me it just sounded like bitchin? without any substance or explanation of the causes.

I was gonna go on a long rant about how sick I am of people wasting time about topics like "why do my favourite DJ?s all play electro?", "why does Sasha mix on a computer and doesn?t play GU Ibiza instead of this new crap?", "what happened to Digweed, he doesn?t play the same stuff anymore?"m but Kobe stole my words, so I?ll spare you my anger.

Instead, I?ll give you a piece of advice : if you don?t like it, move the fuck on and go find and support new talent. Don?t expect music to be spoonfed to you for life. If you really love music, you?ll dedicate yourself to finding something that tickles your fancy, and BTW, try to buy some stuff instead of just downloading it for free.

I?m outta here.

I totaly agree Sasha was off the hook in 90's twillo. Now he lost it, earth to Sasha come back! The DJ thats hot right now is Cattaneo. He is very much what sasha used to be in Twillo power days, Im going to see him in Crobar nyc on mar 17.

Wtf is up with all these people so called bashing Sasha.Maybe hes not like he was in the 90's for a reason..umm its 2006 people.Times have changed and so has the music.Imagine Sasha still playing the same music now that he was in the 90's.Imo that would be pretty boring.Like everyone else said if you dont like his style now move on.theres a bazillion other DJs on this planet you cant get into.

so i doubt he has changed his style that much or he has turned to shit

it might have been you who had the bad night

Agreed. And you touch on a great point. Most of the negative comments I read are pining for the good old days of Twilo. Rookies... Sasha has been my favorite DJ since I saw him at Roxy in 1994, a solid 4 years into his career, a solid 3 years before they started calling Sound Factory "Twilo." So hop on the bandwagon, hop off, whatever. We will be here forever, do you understand? Stay in that moment in time, the beat goes on...............

:Who:, i said what? i my story didn't go quite like that. i like the direction that sasha is taking. if anything he is working harder during the set creating sounds through the computer that we will actually hear. this, instead of spending so much time queing up the next track on the decks. i see that queing time as work but it is never anything that the listener of a live set will ever experience. taking this into consideration i feel that i am listening to a more customized set

here is what i thought was the downfall of the new technology. you watch him dj now is like watching my coworker next to you stare into their computer monitor all day. sure they will look away from the monitor and maybe even interact with you from time to time. i feel the the magic of watching sasha get all giddy or frustrated as he spins a record into the mix is now gone.

i have a mixed feeling overall. i hear everyone say that they shouldn't just go to stare at the dj the whole night, but i do enjoy watching. watching these guys over time helped my understand how they were doing what they were doing as i listened to their cd's for years. now the dj is about as much fun to watch as the guy controling the lights. but imo., if it means that i am hearing a better set, i can learn to live with it.

#559105Post 38 of 81

Re: Dear Sasha, (review 2/4/06 DC)
:Who:, i said what?...now the dj is about as much fun to watch as the guy controling the lights...i can learn to live with it.
Isn't that what I just said you told me? One thing I remember most from my early party days is how important the Dj's connection is with the dancefloor. The Dj should set the vibe and make you feel connected. I dont want to learn to live with Sasha having his face buried into a workscreen all night, and of course, I dont want him to be overly animated and start doing Jesus poses like Oakenfold and Teisto. Ive been a fan of Sasha for just as long as many of you....however, if producing a more quality live set requires a controller that takes your concentration away from the people that are paying to come to see you, then maybe I just wont pay the good money to see him anymore. Kinda shitty to say, but we all have wondered and debated where this whole software and digital movement is heading and watching the guy control the lights is not what I want to do with my friday night.
