I'm looking to upgrade my car's sound system. I've been looking at 12" subwoofers lately and am quite disenchanted with the idea at this point. I haven't found any that sound remotely good yet, imo. They all sounded muddy. What I'm looking for is very accurate bass. Sound quality is way more important than SPL. A friend of mine had a Polk DB which was the old model from 4-5 yrs. ago in a homemade sealed box and it sounded excellent. Every bass note was hit with close to perfect accuracy and it felt like I had just went to an Asian spa for a back massage after getting out of his car, very plush bass. Unfortunately they don't make this same model of subwoofer and my friend has moved out of state, so I can't ask for his advice without having to track him down. I went to circuit city and listened to the polk DB 12", but they had them in a box and it was a dual ported setup. The sound quality was horrible imo, too damn muddy. I know the box has a great deal to do with the SQ of a sub, so it may have just been the box they were in. I also listened to an infinity reference 12" and alpine type R 12" in sealed enclosures, which also sounded like garbage, one in circuit city and the other in best buy. Again, this may be all due to the pre-fabricated boxes they were in. I was looking at Crutchfield and saw that they have a Boston Acoustics 12" with the high roll surround design. Looks like a sweet sub, but I'd hate to buy one and it sound just as crappy as the ones I've tested out recently. I'm planning on building a sealed box to meet the manufacturer's recommended specifications for enhanced SQ when I finally decide on a sub. I've included a link to the sweet looking Boston Acoustics sub below. It's probably a given, but I'm like the majority of folks here and listen to mostly progressive house, breaks and also some jazzy drum n' bass.

Someone please hit me back with some expertise in this area. These car audio sales people that I've been talking to obviously aren't audiophiles. They seem like they just want to make a quick sale and move on to the next customer.

Nice answer Jenks! Any particular JL models in mind that won't deplete the entire wallet's surplus?

Re: Car Subwoofer Suggestions?

i agree i have 2 JL 10's and love the way they sound. having a good amplifier is key to clean sound. i run a PPI 400w amp and i am satisfied.

#517926Post 5 of 72

Re: Car Subwoofer Suggestions?

Good amp as 3d suggested, but also you should have the freq. limited to the sub. Its probably why you are getting muddy sound. I have an old alpine v12 and it has a built in cross-over adjust, works very well. Don't know what out there now a days as its been some time since I took interest in car audio.

Re: Car Subwoofer Suggestions?

The right kind of acoustics aka(box) make a huge difference. The way you manage the air is key. bandpass boxes are very effective on certain subs, as sealed are for others.research products. the correct set up of this type will maximize sound quality.

OOps , you already mentioned that i didnt read that far yet.......never mind then

Re: Car Subwoofer Suggestions?

you should talk to rms_1k, he's our resident mirror shaker

I have a ported custom box with a tiny little 6" JL and a 150 watt MA audio amp, the whole mess fits is my spare tire well and fills out the sound range very nicely. Probably nowhere near as precise as what you're looking for, but it works for me. :not me:

I agree with Jenks...JL is the way to go. I've had 2 Rockford Fosgate Punch XLC 10" for years and they sound really good too.

Re: Car Subwoofer Suggestions?

ummm negative on the JL's.

boston acoustic, rockford fosgate, or kicker...the way to go

personally, i'd rather have a really good set of separates and maybe some nice 6x9's than a set of subs.

Re: Car Subwoofer Suggestions?

Thanks for all of the replies. However, I have a quick question before I go out and do more field testing on the suggested products.

Those who are opposed to JL, what reasons do you have for this, manufacturing defects, dishonoring warranty guarantees, crappy sound, etc.? I went to JL Audio's website and they were stating that their primary focus is in fact sound quality over anything else. Sounds like my cup of tea.

My brother has two 10" JL subs in his truck and they do sound good, but not quite as good as I remember that old Polk DB 12". Although moving up to a 12" JL may very well be my answer for the type of SQ and SPL that I'm searching for.

#518263Post 14 of 72

Re: Car Subwoofer Suggestions?

I have to go with JL Audio myself. VERY efficient subwoofers..the ones i had hit nice basslines even though i was using a shitty rockfard amp. but yeah as for bostons, ive never heard a boston sub. but my car has all around boston compnents, and man does those bitches scream, QUALITY. clarity is what i go for in my car. not just how much i can rattle my trunk haha.

but yeah, i would definatly checkout some JL subs, theres bound to be one to meet your demands and for a decent price.

#518265Post 15 of 72

Re: Car Subwoofer Suggestions?

i had boston acoustic 12's in my yonger days...and pretty much in every way other than price (they were only marginally more expensive) they beat JLs. doing a direct comparison they sounded much clearer, had more punch, and distorted less as the volume went up.

boston components are even better, some of the best i've ever heard.

#518279Post 16 of 72

Re: Car Subwoofer Suggestions?

^ yeah man, boston components kickass! i love em.

^ ^ from what ive heard, 12" 's are the all-around best as far as quality sound. 10's and 18's i hear arent as great as far as going for quality, those like to just push total lows.(supposedly).

And yeah man, one thing ive found out is, if you want the great sound you want (especially dealing with car audio) your gonna have to dish out some bucks. cause trust me, if you buy the "lower class" shit your gonna want it even better in about a month or two. so why not go all out the first time and save yourself the cash later. Thats what i did. I had been in so many cars with bangin systems and would always ask what they have in em. so i went and bought the best i could, and im more than happy now.

but hey, its all in what your EARS want. whatever suits them thangs, go for it brotha

wOOT!

Dont have any upgrade currently, but on my previos car I had a Bazooka 8in 200w self amplified bass tube. Very cheap and doesnt take up minimal space. probly not what ur looking for but thats what i did when i was younger. with good speakers, this combo was descent.

I have 1 elemental 12" sub and it sounds better than most cars I've been in imo. I promise you won't be disappointed... just promise me you don't go buy JLs. that's like buying a sony stereo. or an ipod for an mp3 player. or a toshiba computer. or Always Save instead of Campbells. you get the idea.

#518653Post 21 of 72

Re: Car Subwoofer Suggestions?

yeah i'd go with JL audio... they have always been regarded one of the the best subwoofer makers out there. i currently have 1 10" JL sub in a stealthbox and that bumps my truck something rediculous. clean, accurate, tight bass. i used to have 2 12" MTX's... and those were unbelievable..sounded so clean even at high SPL's. i think you'd be happy with one of those two.

You've almost convinced me to check these out. The problem is nobody carries them around here, so I can't actually go and listen to them before buying. And you still haven't answered the question about why you dislike JL so much. Is it their asking price or have you heard the W6 or W7 models and they honestly sound like the poop to you? Every car audio review mag/website has given them extraordinary reviews. Maybe they're all in JL's pocket. Who knows?

Btw...I watched the excursion video on the Elemental Designs website...pretty freakin cool looking. Not only did they have a very lengthy excursion, but they looked very responsive to the signal being administered, which could possibly serve as an optical measure of reaction time. Can these subs keep up with many different ranges of frequencies simultaneously while still maintaining great sound quality? Much of the progressive music we listen to has very elaborate patterns in the low end frequencies, so the subwoofer I choose must be able to keep up with precision at all times.

Thanks for your continued assistance! :)

Re: Car Subwoofer Suggestions?

usually when people say JL sucks it's because they can't afford it.

the JL amplifier line is also pretty decent as well.

going wrong with one is almost impossible.

Yes, it is very nice indeed, but I'm like most people and can't bring myself to paying $700 for one subwoofer. I am however interested in the W6 which is $350. I'm going to a specialty shop later today to get a first hand test of one. I want to hear what all the hype is about. Maybe they'll have a W3 in stock as well. They're not as pricey, but still handle 300 rms which should be more than sufficient for the type of application I'm searching for. I don't mind paying a little extra if the true quality is there. Like I said though, I'm in search of audiophile quality sound in my car. I have a 1hr total trip cummute to work each day and I would like for it to be as sublime as possible, if you know what I mean. ;)

Elemental Designs has awesome customer service imo. I have a edesign sub and an edesign amp (aka Avionixx) and ordered both from their website. after a year of use I fried my amp... my fault, not theirs. long story short I didn't mount my amp well enough to my car, causing the power cable to break free from the amp while turning a sharp corner. result was a non-working amp because I cut corners during the install... the amp had was fried big-time. even the casing was fried. I contacted them and told them the amp quit working, and sent it to them expecting to have to purchase a new one due to the obvious electricity zaps scattered around the case... the replaced all parts in the amp for free, when the problem was obviously my fault. +1 imo

I'm trying to find sources on the net that can give an objective opinion on it compared to JL... not sure if this means anything to you, but if you go to http://caraudio.com and scroll down one page, you'll see a weekly poll on the right-hand side. "Which subwoofer brand sounds best?" At the time I took the poll, there were 3979 total votes (this week), with elemental holding the highest vote at 31% (1215 votes) and JL in the lowest third at 8% (335 votes).

according to the poll, quality lines up in this order: MTX, Sony, Alpine, JL, Audiobahn, MB Quart, Rockford Fosgate, Kicker, Elemental Designs...

all I know is I had two old kicker 12s that I wanted to replace when I bought this one from edesignaudio. I quickly realized that it hits much harder and lower than the two others. I'm using a custom-made ported box that was recommended on edesignaudio's site. you can download the pdf schematics if you decide to build it.

I'll post objective reviews between the two if I find some... imo JL is the iPod of mp3 players. expensive only because of the name and marketing, and lacking in quality compared to most other competitors.

Re: Car Subwoofer Suggestions?

So I went and listened to the w6 and w7 subs last night. Hype indeed. They sounded just as boomy as the others and had only slightly better overall SQ. They certainly didn't sound good enough to justify all that extra $. So for now, I've decided to upgrade my components up front and 6x9s in the rear deck. Maybe I'll get a small amp for the 6x9s. Hopefully one day soon I'll find the sub quality sound that I'm looking for.

Actually, I did find that excellent subwoofer sound at the specialty store I went to last night. The subwoofer was made my Focal, a french company and they were asking $950 for a single 10". Grrr....

You know, I can't seem to figure out why it's so easy to locate nice SQ in a home audio system, but it's easier to pull my own teeth out with a pair of pliers than find a nice all around system for my car?

Picklemonkey,

I appreciate your research findings. I really want to hear the E-Designs subs now. I must hear them before buying though. So it appears I'm in a bit of a predicament at this point as they have no sales in any shops anywhere. Maybe I'll run into someone who has one in their car for me to listen to. Thanks again for your help man. :)

Re: Car Subwoofer Suggestions?

i am the epitome of an audiophile and the JL's sound great, that's all i know. i've had kickers and mtx subs in past vehicles and the mtx 7500's sound great as well. i don't believe polls like the one above, because how many people that voted for that have even heard all of the subs in that list in order to make an accurate comparison? they haven't and that's why that means nothing... people become attached to certain brands and swear on them up and down, no matter what the end result maybe.

my advice to you... it's better to have some subs in your car than not at all. your decision to not buy any is foolish and the only person that it hurts is you, beacuse you're the one that wants them but just won't buy any. i would go out and buy some subs and PUT THEM IN YOUR CAR. that is the only way to tell. trying to judge what a speaker sounds like in a store is retarded. and oh yeah, you're definitely not too much of an audiophile for any car audio subwoofer, believe me.

I agree most people on that poll haven't heard every brand... but I think it's safe to assume JL, kicker, and rockford are the "major" well-known players in the audio industry. if 1215 people voted for Elemental Designs, it's because they've done their research instead of just going to Best Buy and listening to the available subs and liked them better than the other 3 companies. that's not to say every person that knows Elemental liked their subs... but at least 50% of the votes between those 4 companies chose Elemental over the rest of the commercial shit. :not me:

we could do a Poll about the best mp3 player out there... iPod, Zen, iRiver, or Dell Jukebox, and we'd all know the iPod would win every time just because of its marketing. if Elemental can shine past the other companies' marketing and still win the hearts of the people, it's gotta be worth something imo
my advice to you... it's better to have some subs in your car than not at all. your decision to not buy any is foolish and the only person that it hurts is you, beacuse you're the one that wants them but just won't buy any. i would go out and buy some subs and PUT THEM IN YOUR CAR. that is the only way to tell. trying to judge what a speaker sounds like in a store is retarded. and oh yeah, you're definitely not too much of an audiophile for any car audio subwoofer, believe me.
agreed 100%

Re: Car Subwoofer Suggestions?

The store that sold the JLs and Focal subs had this small ass room with a door on it. The amount of air space in the room was equivalent to the approximate interior size of a Suburban. The JLs had a very boomy type of bass emitting from them. The Focal sounded as clean as could be, which imo was true audiophile quality. I'm with Picklemonkey on the results of the poll and here's why. The majority of the people that frequent the site that hosted the poll are avid car audio enthusiasts to some degree, meaning that most of them have listened to quite a few different brands of subs in the progression of their hobby. Elemental Designs stuck out above all the rest in their minds because the sound had to have been very distinct and the impression left was that ED produced a better overall sounding sub. Like Picklemonkey said as well, Edesigns isn't a very well marketed company. They rely on the quality of their products to build a reputation and basically market themselves, which in turn keeps the consumers' retail costs low. In the poll JL placed 4th out of 9 companies. So by the poll's rating system, Edesign is 176% better sounding than JL Audio. Interesting, if I were to do an in my head ballpark comparison between how much better that $950 Focal sub sounded over the two top of the line JLs I heard, I could honestly say that it sounded at least 50%-60% better. Maybe I will blindly try an Edesign sub if there's the possibility that it sounds close or even exceeds the quality of Focal's. However, unfortunately there is a 25% restocking fee if I don't like it and choose to return the product for a cash refund, which comes out to $31.25.

Influx,

Thanks for the condescending comments, especially calling me foolish and retarded, I just love that shit man! :D Although, you'll probably be sad to know that your derogatory comments weren't the catalyst that sparked the above listed thoughts of mine. Look Influx, all I'm saying man is that we were having a mutually respectful conversation before you decided to pop in and bless us with your expertise in the field of audio engineering. Yes, I'll admit I do have some damn picky ears and that's what I meant by "audiophile quality". Re: Car Subwoofer Suggestions?

Infux is right. maybe a little blunt, but hes right.

listening to polls and website reviews and everybody else is a waste of your time chief_n and ours for telling us about them. you really are putting that much faith in internet polls? All of this well these guys finished 4th and these guys finished 3rd is garbage. sound has a lot to do with personal preference. a buddy of mine loves cerwin vegas because they just bassy as hell but no real sq. i on the otherhand prefer tigher bass and am willing to sacrafice some volume to do so. therefore in turn i like jls. to him cerwin vegas sound the best, i think hes an idiot, but its about what sounds right to him while hes driving in his car.

acting like nothing is worthy for your ears because you read it sucked from some 16 year old on some website is the coolest thing ever and definitly holds accuraccy. do you realize how difficult it is to get a proper listening platform in a car? Have you ever heard of a thing called road noise? I mean come on dude, act like you know something about something.

if you want audiophile, then drop some money and buy something serious such as Mcintosh and dynamat the shit out of your car. audiophile is on an entirely different level then JL, MTX, POLK, Elemental, etc etc etc. thats like buying a used broken cdj100, and expecting it to perform like a cdj1000. Seems like your way out of your league here.

earlier you said you wernt willing to drop the money for a W7 or something equivilant, well good sound costs good money. if your not expecting to spend 1.5-2 grand at least then it really doesnt matter what you buy, because they will all be pretty similar.
Sorry mate. I just didn't like what I heard. It's nothing personal. You sound almost as if my comments are resulting in a drop in some stock shares you own with each of these companies
ok "mate", in the business world we call that "pride of ownership". you've never owned anything worth being proud of before? say you bought a new plasma tv and dropped a nice chunk of change and fell in love with it, then i come on here and tell you that i saw it in a store and almost threw up everywhere because it was the most vile piece of electronic equiptment i had ever seen.

ok dude no offense here, seriously - but putting ANY CREDIT in a poll that rates ROCKFORD FOSGATE higher then ALPINE, or MBQUART is almost comical dont you think? i'm not saying elementals arnt any good or anything like that, i really know nothing about them. but i mean people actually voted for sony. i mean think about it, someone out there in the world (89), willingly decided to vote for sony because they think it really does sound the best. have you ever heard a Sony or a RF sub? it's painful. Audiophiliac or not.

Re: Car Subwoofer Suggestions?

that's why it only got 2% of the votes
if your not expecting to spend 1.5-2 grand at least then it really doesnt matter what you buy
I really disagree there... more money does not always equal better quality.

Poll results do get skewed... and it's usually pretty obvious to see when the most well-known brands are ranked highest, regardless of actual quality. Wouldn't you agree, through, that this poll showing a company that markets itself only by word of mouth doesn't seem to be swayed due to the numbers of all the other well-known brands?

In the end, it all really does come down to personal preference... people will almost always buy based on a past experience or a friend's past experience, and that's cool because all products do work. Chief was just looking for an opinion, and that's what we all gave him... here's mine: Elemental is the only sub company that will ever get my business, and all friends' business if I have any stake in their decision.
