Re: Car Subwoofer Suggestions?

then perhaps elemental doesnt belong on the same poll as lesser brands such as RF and Sony. It's not fair to compare a maybach to a kia. You can easily compare the likes of a stock 1979 Honda Civic system to RF or Sony car sound. Like i was saying to Chief, brands like jl, alpine, mb quart are usually quality, but are nowhere near the likes of Mcintosh and others which are just absolutely phenominal, but costly.

from my personal experiece with audio, you get what you pay for. audiophile is a strong word. theres a big difference between mid to high end audio. thats where i got my price figure from, if your going to be spending less then a grand, the products will be similar in many respects. its when you start reaching the upper echilons is where you find noticable differences (to even the most basic of ears) and only then can the word "audiophile" be thrown into play.

it sounds like as if you feel elemental is the best value out there, most sound for the best price, which is why i can understand you wanting to share the wealth in that respect. but its difficult being so closed off to one product inperticular and still provide objective opinions to all the rest.
acting like nothing is worthy for your ears because you read it sucked from some 16 year old on some website is the coolest thing ever and definitly holds accuraccy.
I simply haven't found a sub yet that I liked, other than the Focal. Please remember I'm not basing my opinion solely on a website's poll. In fact that's at the bottom of my list of supporting information. My ears were the judges of the subs that I tested out, first hand.
ok "mate", in the business world we call that "pride of ownership". you've never owned anything worth being proud of before? say you bought a new plasma tv and dropped a nice chunk of change and fell in love with it, then i come on here and tell you that i saw it in a store and almost threw up everywhere because it was the most vile piece of electronic equiptment i had ever seen.
Yes, I'm quite familiar with the business world and I understand the concept of being proud of what you own. Think about what you just said regarding your friend liking Cerwin Vegas and you liking JL. Now, you said that you think that your friend is an "idiot" because he prefers the sound of a Cerwin Vega. You said it yourself that you think they don't sound as good as JL. That's your opinions man. I'm not going to sit here and say that either one of you are foolish or retarded because of it. You have that right and I have enough tact to withhold any negative comments that I may have about your personal preferences. The reason I became defensive with Influx was because he stepped across the line.

I stated that the JL subs sounded boomy and I'm looking for SQ. You however, may have liked the sound of the W6 and W7. I know that there's a sub out there that's not $950 each that sound very good or even great to me. One of the less expensive and less power hungry models of JL may have that sound, or E designs or maybe even one of the Polk DBs in the right box. I will eventually find a fantastic sounding subwoofer for a reasonable price. When I said audiophile I meant that to be taken loosely and didn't realize that I would later be chastised when I made the comment, so I didn't specify. I just want high quality sound and yes I have dynamat ready to be installed to care of the road noise. ;)

I haven't completely dismissed buying a sub. I've merely postponed it to continue my search. Why be hasty and get something that I'm unhappy with?

Re: Car Subwoofer Suggestions?

My advice is don't overshop. I used to drive myself crazy looking for the best choice or the ultimate deal... it's not worth the stress. Just buy something and be happy with it. Life is short, you like the Focal, please go out and buy it. If there's something better, it doesn't matter-- you bought a quality item and it moves more air than what you got right now.

He's my friend, and i can call him whatever i want. no, but seriously, i was just using that to prove a point. I call him much worse things on a regular basis. I was agreeing with you that my opinion of his gear, is worthless. i just took a couple minute break from work to type those responses as fast as i could and wasn't as wordy as i could of been.

IF you would have read on, you would have saw that i said it didn't matter, because it was HIS money and HIS car. That's what he likes so let him have it. Your opinion doesn't hold much value considering your the one who came to the board to ask for help. the rest of were able to do it on our own evidently.
Why be hasty and get something that I'm unhappy with?
i agree totally. i think it was just ripping on products that board members own is what got others on the defensive.

you can get good sound out of a bad sub with a good amp

the moral of the story?

buy a good amp and a 1 farad cap and you may not have to be as picky when choosing a woofer.

That was a pole smoker comment to make. What, it's a "spirited discussion" so it's cool to say that right? I'm joking, seriously. :p

Re: Car Subwoofer Suggestions?

I'm actually interested to see what you end up with.

but i dont think anyone mentioned a cap yet, but if they did they're right.

In cars with smaller batteries and especially if you live in a state with extreme cold, caps are almost essential.

#519693Post 47 of 72

Re: Car Subwoofer Suggestions?

Caps are definitely good to have, but I'm not convinced that you'd really need a cap. It sounds like you're just trying to run a sub, and not the whole system... unless he planned on pumping out some high wattages through a high-channel-count amp to all speakers in his car, I'd say just not waste the money on an a cap.

#519696Post 48 of 72

Re: Car Subwoofer Suggestions?

I think a lot may depend on the make/model of the vehicle and also weather conditions. if your running your heat on full blast and your system's bumping and your cell phone is charging etc etc, it can strain a battery. especially on 4 cylinder cars like my civic (97). I used to have headlight dimming and a very slight drop in volume at times, but after the cap everything runs smooth now. I've also noticed improved SQ. But it's minimal and not the main focus of buying a cap. When i lived in detroit i did not want to have a dead car battery in the middle of january.
The reason I became defensive with Influx was because he stepped across the line.
i did not step accross the line. you took it personally so don't blame me.

regardless of all this hooplah, i think the main point that everyone agrees on, is that you just have to listen to it in your car, period. it doesn't matter if the room was the size of blah blah blah, it's still not your car. like 3d said.. bad subs can sound decent on good amps and good subs can sound bad on bad amps. so, like many people have said time and time again... go and buy whatever you think you'll like the best, install it and listen to it IN YOUR CAR. if you don't like it, then return it and get somethign else, plain and simple. you have a lot to learn my son.

Re: Car Subwoofer Suggestions?

Thanks for all of your help!

Yes, even you Influx. I know where you were coming from man. Sorry I took you wrong initially.

Money is tight right now due to the holidays, but I still want some low end in my ride. I was stressing over this, cause it is a rather large purchase and I don't want to make a mistake by getting the wrong equipment. And yes, I was just looking for your opinions. I should've kept my opinions I formed after I had went out and tested some of the brands that you guys own to myself. I can see how that could be insulting to you and perceived as me being a snob. I honestly didn't think about offending anyone before I posted them and I apologize to all that I might have offended by doing so.

For the sake of your curiosity, I'll report back to you all once I've made a decision.

Re: Car Subwoofer Suggestions?

That's a sweet ass setup Influx! Very clean looking install. I can see why you take great pride in it. Is the sub fully enclosed in the stealthbox with a port built in for emitting the sound? I had an Onkyo home theater system that had a box design like that. It was an 8" sub and the sound quality was awesome! I had to exchange it for a Panasonic system, because the receiver on the Onkyo died twice and they couldn't fix it the 2nd time around.

I've been thinking of the possibility in taking two 8" subs and putting them in a ported box. Both of the home theatre systems I've owned have had this. My computer speakers are Logitech. The sub in the PC setup is only a 6.5" in a sealed enclosure and has great quality sound. Maybe the reason I felt like the bass was too boomy on the subs I tried out, 10" and 12" was because I'm so used to listening to all of these tight sounding small subs.

Re: Car Subwoofer Suggestions?

i def think your better off with 1 10'' as opossed to 2 8'' subs. Theres a considerable difference (imo) between 8's, 10's, and a 12's. Also, i think a sealed box if your listening to EDM would be preferable. You get more accurate bass as opossed to boomier bass from a sealed enclosure. 12's and bigger have longer excursion and can sometimes "lag" on tracks with faster bpms. I think a 10'' is ideal for edm, it can reacher deeper frequencies then a 8'' (lots of edm features lots of subbass) and also provide for a substantial volume increase where as i think with 8's you could get similar sounds to having amplified component speakers.

by the way, what kind of car?

Re: Car Subwoofer Suggestions?

I drive a 96' Honda Accord EX coupe.

My brother's friend has 2 Infinity Perfect 10" subs without a box, but they come with a RF Punch 700s amp for sale, both for $275. The amp and subs seem to be pretty well matched up wattage wise, 350rms per channel on the amp and 350rms is also recommended for each sub. Any experience with either of these products? I've heard Infinity's 6.5 and 6x9s and really liked the sound quality, but not much experience with their subs.

#520902Post 58 of 72

Re: Car Subwoofer Suggestions?

the kappa perfects are pretty reputable, good sq has always coincided with infinity weather it be car or home audio. If your bros friend cant give you a working demo, when you look at the subs, see how flexible they are when you push the cone, if they are really flexible and loose, careful they wont last long.

I'm not a fan of RF, id suggest many other amp manufactures to power your subs before them. However, the amp could be useful to you if you powered door or component speakers. You wont be running the amp at full power, but 2/3 way speakers respond differently to amplification then just a straight woofer. I'd suggest finding a different brand of amp for the subs, something with a clean sound. I think the infinity amps even are pretty decent, along with alpine and im sure some other people will have some suggestions. i use PPI and i wouldnt trade my amp for anything. but i think PPI shut down :(

Re: Car Subwoofer Suggestions?

thanks... i love that deck... prolly the best deck i've ever owned. sounds great, has tons of features and is easy to get around the setup and menus etc. i was amazed of the sound that comes out of that 10" sub and stealthbox. i've always had two 12"s (in SUV's.. last car was a mountaineer) and thought that 1 10" was going to be wimpy (in a 2005 F-150)...not the case, that 10" sounds phenomenal and will just pound if you want it to. btw chief_n.. yes it is 1-10" downfiring in a ported, composite fiberglass enclosure.

i highly recommend that deck though.. i've always had alpine decks before this, but i got to say, that kenwood blows the doors off any alpine.. and much easier to use too.

My amp is similar to that one. I have one of their 440x4 amps and it has treated me well. it owns. not sure what the model is because it's about 2 years old. once I get back home from vacation I'll try to look up model numbers for all my shit. alpine deck, avionixx/edesign amp, edesign sub

I forgot to ask you the other day, how much wattage RMS are you pumping into that JL 300 RMS sub? I saw that the MTX has the capability to do 900 RMS, but I can't imagine a 300 RMS sub handling that kind of power for too long of a stretch.
