I'm at work listening to Zabiela's Four.2 mix and "Precious" comes on

So it occurred to me that Depechde Mode is one of the most underrated electronic acts in today's electronica world. These guys are amazing. After growing up with them in the 80s when they did the whole synth/pop stuff, they're still rocking dance floors today. Seriously, how many bands have such a dance floor friendly/electronica sound that makes for such good remixes?

I think it's cool that they're still pretty much doing their own sound and yet have some relevance today.

I confess, I've had entire singalong sessions with friends when we put on the DM101 dvd.

Depeche Mode rocks:!: 8)

That's all.

Re: Depeche Mode

DM sure has been a driving influence in a lot of peoples electronic musical experience.

Re: Depeche Mode

The remixes that really stand out for me: The Silence (Mike Koglin) (guess this is not strictly a remix) Useless (Kruder and Dorfmeister) Only When I Lose Myself (Lexicon Ave) Strangelove (Was it habersham or some other recent remix?) Precious (I've heard two mixes but not sure which ones they are :-/)

I'm sure there are more which I haven't keep track of.

Re: Depeche Mode

It's weird but I never liked them back in the 80s, now when I hear one of their remixes, I go nuts

Re: Depeche Mode

I love Depeche Mode, been a fan of theirs for a long time now.

By the way, i finished my set saturday by playing Only When I Loose Myself (Lexicon Avenue Remix). It fuckin rocked. I know i was jumping when that bassline came in.

Re: Depeche Mode

funny.

maybe Depeche Mode should get bands like Beborn Beton, Wolfsheim, Perfidious Words, Diorama, A23, De/Vision, And One, etc to collaborate with the mixes, instead of using an horde of lame-os to vandalize and dismantle their basslines, arrangements and melodies....
Won't happen. None of those mixers have the "name" to get club play in the big clubs, which is really what something like a Sasha mix is for. Yeah, it may only passingly resemble Precious, but hey, Pete Tong'll play it on Radio 1 just because it's got the Sasha moniker tacked on.

Nor would one of those mixes fill the floor at Ministry of Sound, sad to say. And that crowd is a lot larger than those that buy A23 CDs.

Hell, I'd be surprised if dM even knew who any of the abovementioned bands were. The Basildon boys don't really seem to listen to that style of music (Martin's an IDM-head, from the sound of his DJ sets) and none of them are popular enough that they'd've heard them on the radio regularly or anything (except maybe Wolfsheim, if Mart still spends time in Germany).

That said, I still find the choice of remixers baffling sometimes. Sasha I can understand, since "Involver" sold like gangbusters and was a critical darling...but why not a DFA or Mylo, a Plump DJs or a Jacques LuCont? A bunch of guys with hot names right now (and anything James Murphy touches will get a positive review, it seems) who would probably deliver good mixes. Maybe they were busy or wanted too much money.
Get the new CD at Tower, it's on sale for $16.99 and it comes with a DVD!

Re: Depeche Mode

Speaking of Depeche Mode, I picked up the new CD today and it's pretty good. I'll have to give it a couple of more listens. Sounds a little dark in a good way.

Seems like everyone knows songs off Music for the Masses and Violater.

Looking forward to seeing them & the Bravery next month in Houston.

Re: Depeche Mode

Just got the new album today and it is actually pretty good. Not very many bands can come back like theses guys have without have a decent album and then come out with something with the quality of this one.

Totally agree. In fact, I think it?s so good, I?m gonna start a new thread about it.

Eventually...

I?m feeling so lazy this morning...I had this huge review in my head and now I can?t bring myself to writing it.

In short, I think you need to take the time to let this one sink in. I don?t think it?s their best album, but it?s certainly their best since "Songs Of Faith And Devotion". Some amazing songs, I only didn?t like the last one "The Darkest Star".

Oh and this baby is dark and dirty!

Nothing beats:
I don?t want to start any blasphemous rumours But I think that god?s got a sick sense of humor And when I die I expect to find him laughing
The new album is like a retrospective of their sounds over the years. You get a bit of everything--from the synth/electro/pop to the industrial stuff. I'd say it's like a bit of Songs of Faith and Devition + Music for the Masses + Violator + Ultra. Gahan's voice is in top form, sounding absolutely menancing on some tracks and soaring in others. Get it :!:

Re: Depeche Mode

glad to hear this is a good cd. too often bands try to come back strong with a new cd, and sound like they are trying too hard.

that Precious balearic mix is nice too!

#496360Post 27 of 51

Re: Depeche Mode

I too just bought the new album with the extra dvd pack. And am giving it it's initial listens, it always takes me a couple listens to really get into their cd's. I think it's been that way since I first heard them..except ETS and POT. Since I got to see the videos for those early on.

The dvd has a special making of the album portion on it, but unfortunately it's only 8 minutes long. Though I did finally get to see the video for precious, which is kinda strange.

the precious (motor remix) rocks! when zabiela played it a couple of weeks ago the crowd went nuts

Re: Depeche Mode

I have to agree....Depeche Mode deserves a lot of credit for some incredible music.

I've just been getting into their stuff lately and you can really tell how influential they are on the entire electronic scene.

I can't believe how much music they have published! and so much of it is good!! truly amazing.

My fav album would be exciter!

Fuck!

The Toronto has the Ravenettes opening up. I was hoping for the Bravery.

And Playing The Angel is by far their best album since SOFAD.

Re: Depeche Mode

I agree that DM is a fantastic EDM band. The righ combination of great song writing and guitar riffs by Martin Gore, the programing of Andrew Fletcher, and the huge voice and performance of Dave Gahan.

I don't digg their solo stuff though, it just don't do it for me. I've started to like their latest album but still think Ultra and Violator are the best so far. Definitely going to one of their shows in the US... hope they are like the Excite DVD, what a concert!

Re: Depeche Mode

I missed the sell date in DC... I gotta start searching on ebay.

Violater is a classic and some of the tracks are reminiscent... did I say some.
