From the Skrufff Newsletter:
British big name DJ Seb Fontaine launched a ferocious critical assault on progressive house this week, branding the genre he was once associated with ?dull nonsense?.

?There was a time when all these people would be sending me in progressive CDs and I?d be thinking ?oh my God, if I hear one more CD like these I?m going to slit my wrists?, they were so fucking dull,? Seb recalled, ?They created no atmosphere on the dance floor.?

His comments starkly contradicted those of Way Out West?s Nick Warren who this week told Australian magazine 3D World that he remains fully committed to progressive.

?I think I?ve always been a prog DJ. Progressive house is forward thinking dance music,? Warren suggested, ?There?s this whole electro fad at the moment, I?ve never gone down that route. There?s a few interesting tracks but I think a lot of it lacks energy.? (3D World)

Chatting to Skrufff, Seb avoided using the term electro (?If someone asks me what I play I say ?electronic house?,?) though admitted his favourite producers of the moment are Tiefschwarz.

?Tiefschwarz are fantastic and there?s loads of great music out there at the moment, that electronic sound, certainly this summer, has got bigger and bigger, though some of it is too minimal for me,? he said.

?I think electronic house has really revived dance floors, people are smiling again and jumping up and down. A bass line is coming in and you get the whole club cheering. You don?t need all that dull nonsense.?

The ex Radio 1DJ has been touring extensively since leaving the station last year, and performs his first gig in Thailand shortly, where he?ll be showcasing his new sound.

?Due to the internet the world is a much smaller place these days and musically it?s no longer the case of seeing somewhere like Thailand as being the other side of the world; clubbers, wherever they are, are listening to the same music online,? said Seb.

?With any new territory I always approach a gig with the knowledge that the set could go in a number of different directions but it?s not like I?m visiting virgin territory. Clubbers are clued up all over the world these days.?

#484314Post 23 of 57

Re: Seb Fontaine Savages ?Progressive? House

i like his first prototype disc as well as his best of cream comp.

but this guy has no reason to rip on prog, he's been playing it for years

i am not big on splitting hairs when it comes to genres either, what is the point?

#484343Post 24 of 57

Re: Seb Fontaine Savages ?Progressive? House

What a twat. it was hearing a set of his in Ibiza (while there for the first time) that converted me from funky house to prog and i have never looked back. It is up to him what he thinks but why speak out like that. he must know that loads of people are going to think he is out of order. He is shit now anyway! :Crucify:

Agreed, I just deleted all my prog mixes. Does anyone know any good electronic house forums?

Re: Seb Fontaine Savages ?Progressive? House

One of the worst live sets I ever heard was Seb at Pacha, Ibiza 1999. His mixing was all over the shop, he played Cafe del mar 98, and mixed it out before the breakdown, god knows why????

He played for about 70 minutes, and I remember thinking 'That twat probably just got paid ?10k for that'

Re: Seb Fontaine Savages ?Progressive? House

I first heard Sasha's remix of Remember by BT during Fontaines set at Malibu Staceys in 1998, incredible set on an incredible night, pity the guy turned out such a wanker!

I am fully in agreement with old man warren....his statements speek the truth....

espcially PROGRESSIVE HOUSE IS FORWARD THINKING DANCE MUSIC....obviously sebs brain is to miniscule to understand real music

Re: Seb Fontaine Savages ‘Progressive’ House

i think seb's changing now, he got to that point when he's tryin so hard to get to the top, but doesnt succede, no matter how hard he tryes, and he blames it on the music he playes my believe is there's nothing wrong with that music, he just lost it

Re: Seb Fontaine Savages ?Progressive? House

never really had it in my opinion.. there are plenty of dj's i still would like to see, and his name has NEVER popped into my head as a must see. to me he is just a blabber mouthed radio jock a la pete tong

also.. lol.. i wonder if his mum was a better dj.

taken from http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/ibiza2001/fontaine.shtml

"Seb was born in Ibiza and his mum used to DJ out there, so it's no wonder that he ended up doing what he does now. Seb launched Radio 1's Ibiza plans from Cafe Del Mar on 23rd June. He'll also be appearing during the Radio 1 Ibiza Weekend in August."

Re: Seb Fontaine Savages ?Progressive? House
think I’ve always been a prog DJ. Progressive house is forward thinking dance music,” Warren suggested, “There’s this whole electro fad at the moment, I’ve never gone down that route. There’s a few interesting tracks but I think a lot of it lacks energy

I am fully in agreement with old man warren....his statements speek the truth....

Some food for thought. Everyone says progressive is "forward thinking" - i used to agree with that statement, but not anymore. If the prog heads are so "forward thinking" then why do they put up a barrier around prog every time a new genre picks up steam. its like - oh shit tech house is getting popular, well instead of changing the music to incorporate new sounds and ideas(moving the music FORWARD), the progsters just say no that shit sucks its a fad if you play that trendy shit you dont belong in progressive, lets keep it just how it is. please explain the logic to me.

all i can say is - when i started listening to prog, it was a different animal then it is today. listen to hernans funky deep and tribal, then his first perfecto cd - they were fucking sick!!! then listen to renainssance masters 2 - do you see the desparity? hernan is VERY talented, i would be an idiot to say otherwise, but for those of you to think he didnt take the "obvious route", well, your in denial. I am not ripping on hernan whatsoever, so dont even try. and if you can't see the difference between funky deep n tribal, and ren masters 2 - do not respond to my post.

i for one do not think producers like tiefschwarz, steve bug, phonique, and others will be remembered as just a fad. it's fine if you don't like there productions, style, or even their face, thats fine really - but to say they are just putting out music without any substance or talent is just dumb, and now its my turn to call you an idiot.

i just always assumed prog would take elements from other areas and make them there own, not completly dismiss them like they are crap. with this whole "electro" being a fad, seb was right, it has changed dancefloors for the better. for those of you who say you like it deep, well fuck minimal is just naturally deeper then the "dark prog" (imo dark prog doesnt exisit anymore). so i just dont understand all the hate the prog community displays for the rest of the scene.

at the moment, prog shares more properties with trance then anything else, and i guess that doesn't bother anyone else. with djs like oakenfold, avb, and TIESTO playing prog tracks, isnt that disconcerning for anyone else?

music goes in cycles, just like many fassets of life (fashion, cinema, tv, etc). there was a serious lull in the scene about 1.5-2 years ago. the end of '03 to the beggining of '04 saw a lot of changes in the face of prog, why? because trance noticed. they realized people were leaving trance for prog, so they incorporated prog into there sets, and that carried over and changed prog completly.

chuckc - im not speaking to you personally, but to everyone who shares the idea that the guys who are doing new innovative things in music are just porvayers of some stupid fad. you guys should think about how that attitidue reflects to everyone else in the scene. im not saying seb is god or even that i like seb, he has always played lots of cheeze in the past, but im pretty sure hes seen a lot more dancefloors then anyone of you...

so what im saying is, modern day progressive seems to me is anything but "forward thinking", of course it depends on whos listening, but shutting out the new to retain the old is hardly a way to move forward.

peoples exposures and influences are what really helps shapes peoples taste, i understand some people find a niche and never want to leave(because its perfect the way it is), others (like myself) are never satisfied where there at, and jump at any oppurtunity to see what else is out there.

and to say his brain is to miniscule to understand real dance music....you didnt understand what he way saying. he was saying it had gotten boring, thats all. I understand lots of material i think is utterly boring, like algebra, i hate it, it puts me to sleep, but i understand the concepts. there are math professors probobly reading this saying that mother fucking algebra hater, if he had any intelligence at all he'd realize how fucking sick algebra really is....get it guys?

Re: Seb Fontaine Savages ?Progressive? House

prog is a music treasured by those who "were there back in the day" and it is bing created and put on the decks by ppl our age . we gone through the happy garage and piano . we done the booming hardcore . techno we gave up on when we left out teens . D n B was an aquired taste to start with . Prog touched a nerve and reached our minds like no other . until something does the same we will defend prog and not let it be sullied by inferior music .:wanna fi:

ok i'll leave the fucktard comment alone, and let you know minimal techno has been around since the very begining. before prog, and before trance. so if you were listening since '88, im sure you knew all that.

what the hell was hawtin, saunderson, and t1000 doing back at the start? seriously tho, dont respond if you have no clue what your talking about it. i was being very objctive in my posts, so relax on the name calling you ugly brit.

#484993Post 39 of 57

Re: Seb Fontaine Savages ?Progressive? House

but minimal techno wasn't called that. it was called acid and it died out big time .. awaiting a revival and re-packaging ..prog been strong for ages . only recently have ppl got on it's back

Re: Seb Fontaine Savages ?Progressive? House

I've alwys wondered why he wasn't part of the normal series. After listening to a few of his CDs i found out why.

Obviously not as good as the rest.
