Things are not looking bright for Fabric. It's now closed until further notice from authorities.

It doesn't look good when 4 people die in your club in 2 years.

Re: Fabric Closing

Fabric has more security and does more about the drug issue than any club i've ever been in.

You have obviously not visited many clubs then. In the UK Paul Oakenfold used to have it written into his contract, that he would not play a club unless they served free drinking water.

They carried that on, well after he left.

^^ It's actually law here that they have to give you free water . But doing it back then was really good thinking .

Unlike Ibiza where the cold taps are welded shut. Not that it is safe to drink tap water, in Ibiza.

I always end up drinking Vodka & Red Bull at 15 euros. 2 years ago at Space I spent £450 in 12 hours. It was worth every penny. With expensive tickets, drinks and (don't get me started on) Taxis, the cheapest thing on the island is Class A drugs.

I think it's like that everywhere, not only in Ibiza (if you know where to buy them  )

Re: Fabric Closing

Everyone is different, but I find alcohol really boring.. it doesn't do much for me and it gets expensive. It sort of works at a bar, but not at the parties we are discussing here. I know that some people can pull it off, but there is no way I can keep drinking for 7-10 hour with Digweed in charge..

In my experience the fun to cost ratio in psychedelics (psilocybin, lsd) is the best.. 7-8 hour journey with minimal hangover. Perfect for marathon sets. mdma is okay too, but I am not a fan of the hangover and its only a 4 hour deal.. its a once or twice per year thing for me. It breaks my heart when I see people taking it for 2-3 days straight.. or they just overdose because more=better.

There has to be a way to educate the young on how to properly handle drugs. If it wasn't such a taboo subject we can do a much better job at preventing situations like this..

Re: Fabric Closing

TBH I'm not that fussed. The best night I had in there was in 2001 for Digweed and that wasn't that great. I've just never got the hype around the venue. Though, London clubbing has taken a battering in the last 10 years. Studio 338 burnt down last month as well.

Re: Fabric Closing

Hi Di. :)

I think it's a shame it's closed in the way it has. If it was unsuccessful and they couldn't anyone to go then so be it. But it was well run and a success for 17 years, no mean feat.

A political decision and it stinks
So Keith sold his family home and invested everything he had into creating the club he would want to go to. It took seven years – with innumerable false starts – for Fabric to become a reality. "Farringdon back then was just a shitty old industrial zone, but very central – which was perfect," he recalls. "The space itself was unrecognisable – it took two years of structural work to turn it into a club, but I had the eye from doing warehouse parties... I walked in and I just knew."

But a gift for spotting the perfect location doesn't necessarily mean guaranteed success. "Everyone else in the industry thought we were mad," says Keith. "There was this big West End club called Home that was opening a month before us. I remember one agent, who's actually a good friend now, came down and was like:

"You do realise Home is opening a month before you?" "Yeah." "And you do realise their resident DJs are Paul Oakenfold and Danny Rampling." "Yeah." "Well, who are your residents?" "Terry Francis and Craig Richards." "Who the fuck are they?" "They're my friends."

Yeah. The door and the cloakroom are on ground level. All of the bars, toilets and dance floors are underground.

Re: Fabric Closing

It's sad these iconic places are dropping like flies and I'll never get to experience them. The newer places like Output that Digweed raves about is just ... a ... club.

#1768028Post 39 of 97

Re: Fabric Closing

Most people visit these places a few times a year. Clubbing isn't the phenomenon it was in the 1990's or 2000's. Most of my recent clubbing jaunts have involved leaving the country and have been a lot more fun. There aren't many weekly club nights left in the Uk. The only one that springs to mind is The Gallery and I have only been there once, since Turnmills closed. London Weekend Events have put on some excellent nights, in the last few years. The Tobacco Dock Events that have been during the day have been a lot better than the nights at Fabric I have been to.

I tried finding the flyer for the only show I went to @ Fabric. Tyrant's 3rd Anniversary, 2001. Anyone better at googling than me can find it?
