Ecstasy and anti-depressant drugs can block cancer growth

Ecstasy and anti-depressant drugs such as Prozac have the potential to stop cancer cell growth, research has found. A University of Birmingham, England, team tested the impact of amphetamine derivatives such as Ecstasy and weight-loss pills, and antidepressants including Prozac.

They found the drugs were effective at blocking cancer growth in more than half of lymphoma (white blood cell cancer) samples tested. It is hoped the FASEBJ Journal study will will lead to new cancer therapies.

The study focused on 17 samples of acute lymphoblastic leukaemia and multiple myeloma.

Cancer growth was slowed down in nine out of the 17 samples when they were exposed to antidepressants, and in 11 out of 17 when exposed to one or both of the amphetamine derivatives.

Researcher Professor John Gordon said: "We think that a range of psychotropic agents that are being used, or sometimes abused, for other reasons will now help us in our fight against all different types of cancer.

"We are excited that drugs like Prozac are effective in killing these types of cancer cells, as these antidepressants are in such wide circulation and have an impressive safety record."

However, the researchers stressed that the use of ecstasy was not so straightforward - the dose required to block cancer growth was so high it would kill the patient.

Dr Nick Barnes, who also worked on the study, said he was still hopeful the drug could be one day be used to combat cancer.

"Perhaps by breaking down the actions of this designer drug we can extract its cancer killing properties from more general toxic effects associated with its use.

The research was supported by the Leukaemia Research Fund. Spokesman Dr David Grant welcomed the findings.

He said: "Around 10,000 people are diagnosed with a lymphoma in the UK each year and so the possibility that some of these patients can be treated with antidepressants that have cancer-killing properties is truly remarkable.

"Clearly there is a lot more work to do before this became a reality but it is very exciting that there may be other, much less aggressive ways, of treating this particular cancer."

science is another form of business. It has nothing to do with the greater good or any of those pipe dreams. It only has to do with money. If it has side effects they will tell you after "oh sorry we didn't get that result in our previous research."

#414987Post 17 of 69

Re: Ecstasy and anti-depressant drugs can block cancer growth

Science is not another form of business. There is more money spent on science than it gets in return. Research costs a lot of money. The one time they get something right, they don't get in return what they've put into it in money, man hours, etc.

One of hunders of thousands of glaring examples...

Science, Jonas Saulk, through extensive research found a cure for Polio. Polio vaccines are free. Science cured the world of a massive epidemic many decades ago. Just read today there was a massive outbreak in Yemen, 60 dead, over 100 expected soon. The WHO, with FREE vaccines expects to curb the outbreak shortly.

^That's science. Not business.

Re: Ecstasy and anti-depressant drugs can block cancer growth

I am sure that everybody here is aware of a man named Joseph Newman. If not

http://www.josephnewman.com/

He invented the energy machine. He invented it 40 years ago but the government wouldn't let him use his patent. The energy companies tried to by it from him for $200 million to keep it quiet. He didn't accept knowing that it is a multi-billion $ industry. Why do you think that they are just now this month letting him finally move forward?? Because of the price of oil now is getting ridiculous. I am in the invention industry and tthis shit happens everyday in this business.

#415007Post 24 of 69

Re: Ecstasy and anti-depressant drugs can block cancer growth

jeez. at no point did i ever get mad here you silly canadian.

so some inventor got taken advantage of, shit happens. people and industry get taken advantage of on a daily basis, that doesn't mean you can pigeon hole the entire field of SCIENCE as BUSINESS. I think we're talking about two different things here.

#415008Post 25 of 69

Re: Ecstasy and anti-depressant drugs can block cancer growth

There hasn't been enough research done into the effects of illicit drugs on humans. One of the biggest studies used in the 80s as a reason to make ecstasy illegal was recently discredited (the one that said rats died from it and got holes in their brains). Turns out those rats were given massive doses of methamphetimine instead ... ecstasy sized doses of meth times about 10 or more. It also turns out that the author of that study was on the government payroll. He may have assumed that he would find extreme harm due in his rats due to ecstasy, and so maybe didn't look closely enough into the (to others) unexpectedly lethal results.

This was unfortunate for several reasons -- ecstasy has shown tremendous promise as a treatment in conjunction with counseling for post traumatic stress disorder, among other things. Scientists in the US who want to pursue this research still have a very difficult time getting approval for even carefully controlled clinical trials. There have been some studies that were initially approved and then denied approval due to the media demonization of ecstasy.

I would love to see studies done on people who have a stable pattern of recreational drug use to find out why they are able to use without major negative consequences (like addication) in their lives up to this point. I don't mean to say that for these people drug use is consequence free -- if nothing else, everything someone buys an illicit drug, they risk jail, but I can't help but think that if we could have a more honest and open dialog about drug use in the country, just maybe there wouldn't be so many addicts.

Of course...nothing is made for free. But when it comes to the ultimate goal, the reason the vaccine was created in the first place, and with it being given away for free, where is the "business" in that???

Re: Ecstasy and anti-depressant drugs can block cancer growt

Science is bussiness? how many scientists do you guys know? E is illegal, ergo, it's bad. What? Looks like the war-on-drugs propaganda is finally working...

Let people take whatever they want as long as they don't bother you... I'm sure others would have a lot to say about other people smoking cigarrettes and passing out on alcohol... If you think they're going to have jelly for brains in 20 years, well, let them be. Just as others will be on the list for liver transplants and have the lungs of a coal miner.

sure there are examples, like Salk, of scientists giving their discovery to the world for free. That's wonderful. There are a few other famous examples. Now, though, private corporations are spending huge amounts of money in research and development. Those companies have stockholders. If scientists are employed by these companies instead of by a charity as Salk was (March of Dimes) then there's no question of the scientist being able to give his work away. Whatever he produces is the property of a business.

Re: Ecstasy and anti-depressant drugs can block cancer growt

undrgrndwmn- The studies you speak of were done in the 90's and were not the cause for making Ecstasy illegal. The DEA was attempting to get it scheduled but even the judge didn't feel that they had proven the drug to have a high abuse potential and no medical uses. The judge also stated that it should have been scheduled either a 3 or 4. The DEA didn't want to wait and then placed it on an "emergency ban".

http://www.erowid.org/chemicals/mdma/mdma_law3.shtml http://www.erowid.org/chemicals/mdma/mdma_law2.shtml

I'm really surprised at the reaction by most here. Amazing how some are so willing the disregard the information because it suggests a positive use for an illicit drug. The article also mentions SSRI's like Prozac but most probably chose to ignore that as well. To me this makes perfect sense as increased levels of seratonin have been shown to be have a natural healing effect (your more likely to be healthy if your happy).

Re: Ecstasy and anti-depressant drugs can block cancer growth

No way...no one here would make snap judgement just because the subject was an illegal drug (and this is an anti-drug community right) and they were "edgy" at the time. cough asdf cough

Re: Ecstasy and anti-depressant drugs can block cancer growt

ADSF, just for you, MDMA was made illegal when the DEA noticed an influx of it in the mid 80's - early 90's. Because it was becoming the new craze, they had to do something about it so they made it illegal. Thus why adequate research has not been allowed. I don't advocate ecstasy nor I do feel it will help people, however, http://www.maps.org/ has other things to say. Also, I'm pretty sure there are a few secrets within the chemical make up of these drugs that could lead to positive outcomes. Just because it might be made illegal doesn't mean it should always carry a negative annotation.

The same could be said about alcohol. No one here is advocating children's use of drugs but as adults I think people should be able to make the decision to ingest what ever they choose. Sure there horror stories from the use of drugs but what about the flipside? With most drugs not a whole lot of good comes out of them, though this one seems to be an exception to that rule. Help for people dealing with cancer, rape victims, traumatized(sp?) soldiers, even maritial issues. I can say with certianty that it has made me a better person. Its helped me realize a better self image, given me the ability to communicate with others much more effectively and helped me estabilish the basis for a relationship others could only dream of having.

If a 12yo is out to get high, they'll find a way to do it. Maybe my means of sniffing glue, E, alcohol, or oxycontin. There's always going to be a small percentage of the population that is going to abuse, do we let these people ruin it for the people it may have a chance of helping? If so than we should ban automobiles since there's the few that drive recklessly, ban guns since some choose to use them for violence, maybe even airplanes since a select few choose to fly them into buildings.

i agree and understand your view point on the issue. it only took me once to be at a Seattle party and watch a kid on 21 hits of acid and three pills of e. i will never forget, it is burned into my mind as a vivid video. it was one of the worst things i have ever felt.

for years we have been doing fine without mdma and all the spin offs, and surely if used in need i see no harm. perhaps because of the event of the 12 year old totally fucked out of his mind, i can not justify such a risk. the whole point of this ... it was a child that did not know. he was young and very very stupid. there is also a good chance he did destory his life.

sad.

i guess as they say "it is your own body, do as you wish" ... but a child. i will do anything to protect my child, even it causes my own life . that is me. and that is my love for YOU people.

surely we are talking about two dfferent spectrums ... yet my heart speaks differently. hate me or love me. but that is my IMO.

cheers.

Well if you do anything to protect you child theres no need to make things ilegal cause he wouldt have acces to acohol or any drug..

I think that the one to blame is not the state for that 12 old years boy, the fucking asshole there where they fadders!

I get a nice education from my parents, alwayz been surrounded by a full of drugs evirioment, and i only tryed them whem i want, in the amount i want, and never needed to fuck up myself with them.

Re: Ecstasy and anti-depressant drugs can block cancer growth

for those who have done E its actually pretty easy to understand what your brain will be like should you have an ongoing and continual cycle of usage.

as you age your brain will work more and more like it does the day after you party. you know..cant think straight...kind of down...overall malaise. all because youre spent.

dont let any quack studies debunk what your common sense tells you: you will pay for it one day if youre not already.

i read somewhere that salvador dali said everyone should do drugs 5 times. i couldnt agree more. i personally think the folks who completely abstain miss out, however, once you know what its about the more you do it the more you rot and generally play with fire.

know why E makes you vomit? because your body is flipping out and wants whatever is in it OUT. thats a fairly severe reaction for the body, should tell you the severity of whats going on.

i party once every two years..maybe. went down to the WMC in march and partied at diggers/pawn shop tuesday night. did 2. woke up the next day, wed., felt fine and went to a few seminars. come 5pm i had to sit down and within an hour i couldnt move. luckily i made it to the car and back to the hotel parking lot where i had my friend call the paramedics. vitals and blood sugar were fine but i really thought i was going to die. no shit. my heart was going crazy and the doctors said its not uncommon to see people come in and die of heart attacks. i was honest and made my friend tell them i partied the night before.

moral is..just because you think you drink water, keep salt and potassium levels decent and arent over-heating doesnt mean youre not at risk. miami beach emergency room has seen it all and they were rather non-chalant about what a dumbass i was and how often they see the heart attacks and people dying from E. im a healthy male and that scared the snot out of me.

hope its useful
