Sasha, Tenaglia and Vasquez have all done it. But would you pay to hear a DJ whose set was being transmitted from another club?

Would you go to a club to hear a DJ set if the DJ was DJing Remotely?
Re: Would you go to a club to hear a DJ set if the DJ was DJing Remotely?
Originally I would have said no. But at the end of the day you go there to listen to music, not look at some guy stood around the decks smoking. I suppose it's not much different to going to a club and having the music transmitted to a different room. Digweed did it at Fire when the set was played in 3 different rooms.
Re: Would you go to a club to hear a DJ set if the DJ was DJing Remotely?
Probably not.
Re: Would you go to a club to hear a DJ set if the DJ was DJing Remotely?
Thought future sound of london's ISDN gigs were amazing. Not one club transmitting to another but Fsol in a studio broadcasting to several venues. Was a buzz
Re: Would you go to a club to hear a DJ set if the DJ was DJing Remotely?
No.
Actually home is already the best place to hear music for me.. though i would pay (club ticket money) to hear my fav Djs sets online every weekend drinking a cold one with a proper northern light joint (or any quality weed)
If you are married, this it's like the best oportunity ever
Re: Would you go to a club to hear a DJ set if the DJ was DJing Remotely?
i would pay a lower price to get the recording (320 mp3 preferably or even raw FLAC) so i could listen to it at my own leisure or put on a house party with it but not in a club.
going to a club and seeing the dj live is the whole experience, ambience... why go out to a club if you are not going to see him or her? just go to a pub in my opinion..

Probably not.
Re: Would you go to a club to hear a DJ set if the DJ was DJing Remotely?
Pros: Get to see Sasha on TV. Sasha doesn't really mix these days; computer. Get absolutely hammered and scope the local talent. Hang out. Tell everyone that I was part of something ever so special.
Cons: Waste money on overpriced drinks See Sasha on TV, slightly different than seeing him live, ever so slightly. Waste time, and do drugs loosing my fucking head to a 'DJ' mixing on a big fuck of screen.
If the tickets were cheap enough, why the fuck not?
Re: Would you go to a club to hear a DJ set if the DJ was DJing Remotely?
Possibly, but probably not

I thought he ws back on cdjs..or is it cdjs via traktor?
On a separate note: can he see the clubs he is being streamed to? Ie how can he gauge crowd reactions?
The price would have to be right, otherwise I agree with whoever said the best place is home to listen to music.
Re: Would you go to a club to hear a DJ set if the DJ was DJing Remotely?
I would. One of the reasons I still go out is to listen to music on a club sound system. I have a pretty decent home system and spent waaaaay too much on my last pair of headphones, still nothing beats the sensation of a bassline making your chest vibrate.
Re: Would you go to a club to hear a DJ set if the DJ was DJing Remotely?
This is how i see it - The DJ is at his studio/home/whatever and plays the music with his equipment and the crowd at the club watch him on a big screen..It's important that the DJ can see the reactions on the dancefloor too via cameras so this way he can control the night as he is actually there.. If that's the case i will go to this event, otherwise (just transmitting his set from another club) - probably not.
Re: Would you go to a club to hear a DJ set if the DJ was DJing Remotely?
only if it was FSOL doing ISDN
Re: Would you go to a club to hear a DJ set if the DJ was DJing Remotely?
What if they were playing in the club, but behind a curtain so you couldn't see them.
Re: Would you go to a club to hear a DJ set if the DJ was DJing Remotely?
I can't say I have ever bought into that 'Controlling The Night' or 'Reading The Crowd' nonsence. At the end of the day they are pretty much going to play the same records that they intended on playing before they even set foot in the club. There could be slight differences, like paying a festival for 90 minutes to 3 hours at MOS or even 6 hours somewhere like The Bomb to 200 people. But not that much.

That's because you probably never played in front of other people..Trust me i thought the way you do before my first night at a club - i will play whatever i planned and so on and so on..only 20 minutes later i had to change my playlist couse noone at the club responded to my deep house tracks i was playing because the DJ before me warmed up with some groovey tech house tracks..so i went more peaktime-ish and everything was again ok.. you know you have to ''read'' the crowd - that's one of the most important skills in the industry =)
Re: Would you go to a club to hear a DJ set if the DJ was DJing Remotely?
Sounds like you played a load of tracks people didn't like, so you played a load 'crowd pleaser's . You didn't make some subtle changes that somehow got the crow moving. No rocket science in that one I'm afraid
I saw John Digweed play after Judge Jules once. John didn't do a good job of reading the crowd that night.
Re: Would you go to a club to hear a DJ set if the DJ was DJing Remotely?
Blatantly the DJ befores fault.
Re: Would you go to a club to hear a DJ set if the DJ was DJing Remotely?
I used to play my school disco. My Sisters Of Mercy records always went down a storm.
Re: Would you go to a club to hear a DJ set if the DJ was DJing Remotely?
That reminds me of Pete Bromley (resident at Golden), week in week out Pete would play alongside big name DJs. I recall Pete having to play after Tall Paul then before John Digweed. Pete somehow managed to make that transition from hard house to progressive house. I'm sure he didn't have to look into the crowd. I think he had a fair idea of what he was going to play, before he set foot in the venue.

I would imagine crowd expectations are very different after Jules, would've been tough for Digweed to work that! I'd put Digweed on before Jules anyway

Chunky,
certainly respect your knowledge about music and all but let me tell you, this schizophrenia posting does not help you.
my 2 cents

These days they can take masses more music so they can choose what to play at any given time. Programming is really important, even having the same records the time that you play them is really important. 6 hour sets should definitely be very different . That is why I say there are't many good long set Djs :)
Nearly had the behind the curtain thing here in Melbourne a couple of weeks ago  They had a screen in front of the Djs. Which was sort of Ok if they were over six foot but all we saw of Guy J was the top of his head. Pretty sure Guy wasn't happy about that according to his twitter. :) We couldn't see Henry Saiz's band either. I believe for the best sets the Dj has to be enjoying it as well. I think they should be included in the night.
A friend of mine went to a psy event where the Dj was just streamed onto a wall. She hated it. I'm not going to pay for that.

I think people can go a bit overboard with it...

No. Only because they are trying to hard to state a point tjat you don't need to see the dj...
Oooh look at me i have made a point you don't need to see me to hear the music...ahh haa!! but you can't see me. I am so post modern...no, actually you are just a cunt absusing the term "artist"
That type of dj would probably take the curtain down because he would need his/her ego stroked by viewing his perceived mind control over his dance floor minions with his "musical journey".
How many enemies did I just make there?

^^^ Yeah, I think so :)
Re: Would you go to a club to hear a DJ set if the DJ was DJing Remotely?
I had some great nights a Turnmill's in London, at the Gallery, Elements, Release Yourself, Heavenly Social etc. you couldn't see the DJ playing there, unless you looked through a very small window in the door. It never really effected the night.
Re: Would you go to a club to hear a DJ set if the DJ was DJing Remotely?
Actually many times when you looked through the window the DJ would be sitting down.
Re: Would you go to a club to hear a DJ set if the DJ was DJing Remotely?
Blatantly the DJ befores fault.
No. It was my mistake and i was lucky to be able to fix it. Imagine if i was playing remotely 2 hours of deep house as i was planning without to see the reactions of the people?! DISASTER! Chunky, if you had a good time at the club with DJs that didn't care much about the reactions of the people there - that's ok but that doesn't speak well for those DJs!
EDIT : I will give you another example with a DJ you know i really like - Danny Tenaglia - his gig in Yalta in 2008 was brilliant - he played whatever he wanted but in the way he controlled the reactions on the dancefloor like i champ! His recent gig here at Yalta was way more standart - he played his stuff and the party was good but it can't compare to the 2008 gig at all..
Re: Would you go to a club to hear a DJ set if the DJ was DJing Remotely?
Kind of like Armand Van Helden playing Hip Hop on the Terrace at Space.
Re: Would you go to a club to hear a DJ set if the DJ was DJing Remotely?
There is not any skill in what you are saying! You look out into the crowd, they are either dancing or they're not. If you're really bad they will walk.
Re: Would you go to a club to hear a DJ set if the DJ was DJing Remotely?
Isn't this so called programing the opposite of reading the crowd?
Isn't this so called programing the opposite of reading the crowd?
No, it's not.. Dude,we are actually saying the same thing in a different way .. If the people don't dance at the club - that's because the wrong music is playing and the DJ must change it.. OK, that's not skill, that's part of his job! So how this reflects on his programming? It's easy - if your crowd is up to more vocal stuff - you will play more vocals,if they are ready for more techno-ish sound - give it them BUT it's gotta be YOUR kind of vocals,YOUR kind of techno..So you basically will play what you planned before the night but in the way the crowd demands it =)
Total nonsense
Total nonsense is for you,but it's a daily life for most of the big name DJs..And the funny thing is when they are asked how they prepare themselves for particular night out the usual answer is that they don't do special preparations at all - ''some new music, some old and we will see how it goes''
btw one of the best ''crowd readers'' i have seen from the big name DJs is SVEN VATH..Hes not only great DJ technically and a funny entertainer with his show behind the turntables, but he feels the mood of the people in front of him and somehow is able to transmit his ''Gute laune'' craziness to everybody with his music..
Re: Would you go to a club to hear a DJ set if the DJ was DJing Remotely?
I used to have to do some programming at work, I would say there is a large element of precision involved. You don't program things while the program is running. If you have already played a duff record your programming is shit. You won't hear me shouting 'hey Assimo you're going the wrong way' You know why? because he wasn't programmed to go the wrong way.
