Re: Meetup - Digweed - Firestone - Orlando, FL

I think you'll will find this hilarious:

So I caught Digweed one time at Avalon in Singapore. Midway into the set, two douchebags walked up on stage, shook a big ass bottle of champagne, and sprayed it onto the crowd. The rest of the night was ruined by sticky champagne and the smell.

(This was after two tacky dancers left the stage.)

If only you'd been there to tell Avalon on the mores of clubbing!

Re: Meetup - Digweed - Firestone - Orlando, FL

Just think not every club is 'underground' Yes clubs these days are going to appeal to the facets of fucking everybody. Millionaires and the likes. With the younger crowd now looking to be more appealed to the glitz and glamour of it all it is no surprise that clubs are becoming more like this. Even if a decent DJ plays at venues like these I do choose to stay away from it as much as I can.

Not intent on taking sides, but are you offended about the fact that people sit down in clubs or that Florida and his "friend" are booking a table for a night out that he was looking forward to inviting some friends from MS?

If you've clubbed long enough in the U.S. and the older you get, you'll find that getting a table isn't really that huge a deal. Rather than have some E-ed out numbskull constantly rub his sweaty arms all over you have his armpits shaking violently in front of your face cause the only thing that matters to him is jack-rabbiting the room, a table gives you the convenience of having your own little secluded spot to sit out tracks you don't enjoy and groove in the vicinity of when you do like a nice song come on, all without having people going mental in your face.

Can't speak about the public perception in the U.K. but having been in the rave scene for a decent portion of my life and a good bit of it here in the U.S. - I've just come to accept the convenience of getting a table when going out (especially in my late 30s).

Re: Meetup - Digweed - Firestone - Orlando, FL

i don't know kamal, i think if you don't want to be part of the "sweaty drugged up crowd" a: you're either going to the wrong clubs or b: you're too old to be clubbing... the great thing about glasgow is we have to really main clubs, the arches is the big main club and that is first to go to when clubbing but as you get older you realize that after being in 2 minutes and asked if u want any pills is really not the place to be for you anymore and the people that have put on nights in there have realized this and moved certain nights to the second and more mature club called the sub club, trust me, if u have even a hint of drugs in ur eyes or ur too drunk or what ever u just won't get in there, the crowd is more mature and its certainly a lot more relaxed ( without tables... although i must admit there is seating )

i just don't get the whole table thing but i admit its probably because i,m european

#1708634Post 56 of 109

Re: Meetup - Digweed - Firestone - Orlando, FL

Maybe it's an age thing but I'm with Kamal.

I've done the gamut of raving and clubbing. From 'roughing it out' at Earthcore (forest/extinct volcano parties) to illegal raves in factories to warehouse-sized parties to clubs and bars.

I have puddled on the floor, puddled in the chill out room, made out on some dirty couch at an afterhours bar, slept on the floor, woke up put on the sunnies and took public transport home when everyone's going to work.

It has nothing to do with being too old to club. I just did Tresor/Watergate/Berghain in Berlin, Airwaves in Iceland and ADE in Amsterdam last year, planning another trip to Berlin soon.

It's a matter of tolerance. I put up with less shit as I get older. Just as as enticing as Burning Man is, I know realistically I wouldn't do it.

Those of you with these table issues are associating them with a certain stereotype: with douchebags and popped collars and champagnes and girls looking like oompa loompa. That's your chip on the shoulder.

I just think of the table as my chill out corner 8)

#1708635Post 57 of 109

Re: Meetup - Digweed - Firestone - Orlando, FL

Issues? Haha

Are those the things we once called problems?

I don't give a fuck what people do in florida really I do however find it hard to believe that a true house head would spend their night sat at a table :)

#1708636Post 58 of 109

Re: Meetup - Digweed - Firestone - Orlando, FL

It's not a chip on the shoulder. It can't be really as the concept is a new one to me. You guys do seem very defensive about it all.

#1708638Post 59 of 109

Re: Meetup - Digweed - Firestone - Orlando, FL

Not at all, there's nothing to be defensive about when I've done it all. It's not like we have any pretensions to something else.

You started it, and you were pretty aggressive about it.

This was just some dude inviting MSers to a meet up at a club until you zeroed in on the table and turn it into an issue.

Re: Meetup - Digweed - Firestone - Orlando, FL

if that's what you're into that's what you're into

but i think for the people complaining seeing people sitting at a table is a bit odd as its usually people who have a taste for "extremely low quality cocaine and cheap champagne" and thinking they above everyone in the world or they've seen people in their late 40's early 50's sitting down because they've realized that maybe their friends in their early 30's talking them into going to see "such and such at such and such" was maybe a bit of a bad idea

#1708641Post 62 of 109

Re: Meetup - Digweed - Firestone - Orlando, FL

^^^ that's what I meant about certain stereotypes associated with the table crowd.

There's a reaction to tables in this thread that seems like a knee jerk reaction to that stereotype as though we're them for being pro-table, even if audrey_w claims this is a new concept to her.

It's no different from putting my drink down at a standing table.

Not sure why the judgey reaction to tables. This is like a Seinfeld episode.

well can u imagine a dj's reaction to playing his/her top tune and yet the whole crowd is sitting at a table drinking champagne

#1708643Post 64 of 109

Re: Meetup - Digweed - Firestone - Orlando, FL

I haven't been to a club in years sadly... I haven't had a table at a club in around 10 years... A friend asked me to go see Digweed and said he was getting a table. That's it, nothing more, nothing less. I know one thing though, A dj as famous as digweed is brought from Europe to clubs in the US to sell tables, alcohol and more tables and more alcohol. Also, I am guessing there will be about 5 tables total at Firestone, most likely on the 2nd floor. My friend and I are both married and will be bringing our wives with us who are both not really big clubbers, although his wife is from Estonia and is really cool. At any rate, I probably wouldn't even bring my wife to Firestone without a table as I know she personally wouldn't have a good time, where as I could get along fine either fucking way. I'm also coming up on my 34th birthday (sunday), so if my friend wants to get a table and celebrate, great.

Pikey gifs anyone? :lol::lol::lol:

i completely get it but at the same time i don't understand... as i understand it it's like the US clubs catering for the wrong crowd is more important than catering the people that actually make a club what it is or what it is supposed to be

i,m not trying to offend anyone btw

the trouble i see is that right now its "v.i.p" soon everyone is going to want it, as demand out sells supply its going to be like popping down to the store for a pint of milk

is this really the future of clubs ?

#1708647Post 67 of 109

Re: Meetup - Digweed - Firestone - Orlando, FL

I didn't catch Digweed in Shanghai because the club was known to have more tables than dance floor.

But Digweed played there anyway 'cos he got paid.

The more sensible clubs have tables at the back, leaving the dancefloor available.

There are cultural factors too. In Asia, clubbing is synonymous with 'entertaining.' IE. you host people whom you have to 'entertain'. You invariably find these (likely) business men at tables with women and drinks, playing dice while some shitty shrilly music is blasting from shitty speakers so loud you go deaf.

But here's a different side of the coin: I caught DJ Three at Marquee in Chelsea, NY. There were tables at the back towards the bar, but being the TRUE MUSIC LOVERS that we were, we didn't have a table.

Passing the tables to get to the bar I had two drunk women slobbering on me.

I spent the night on the dance floor looking up on a stage, DJ Three spinning, flanked by two dancers wearing corsets and lasers shooting out of their breasts. Throughout my time on the dancefloor I was interrupted by people shoving past me, walking around me, and groups repeatedly taking group selfies in front of me. WTF take group selfies on the dancefloor?

So ... I think all this table hate is unwarranted. The douches are everywhere :)

#1708648Post 68 of 109

Re: Meetup - Digweed - Firestone - Orlando, FL

its not hate its bewilderment ... the whole concept of going clubbing is to get sweaty, dance, stand at the bar for an hour waiting to get served, talk shit to people who's had to much drink or drugs... i think if you don't expect that or aren't willing to deal with that then you really shouldn't be in the club in the first place

#1708649Post 69 of 109

Re: Meetup - Digweed - Firestone - Orlando, FL

Well I've been there done most of it, your concept of getting sweat, dancing, etc etc.

Haven't you been to a club, gotten tired, and go to a chill out room? Or a rave? Step out for fresh air and end up staying out longer than you intended cos you're chilling or talking shit to randoms as you say.

I think you're mistaking having a table as sitting at the table the whole night. At least I don't when I've had tables. I dance on the floor, I dance around the table, I have a place to put my drinks down, or I can just sit and relax or talk shit.

It's hardly any different from going to a chill out room except the table is it.

Stop being so caught up with the idea of a table, or I think what's tripping you guys up is the idea of sitting down the whole night. Which is not that.

the difference is the status... i mean of all the places i,ve been to and been to a chill out area i,ve not had to fork out $2000 to listen to old orb tunes or buy a drink, but yea i have been tired before and sat down

but like i said and it wasn't addressed ... is this the future of clubbing ?

Re: Meetup - Digweed - Firestone - Orlando, FL

Status of? Having a table = VIP?

Have you never been on a guest list, getting into an invite-only part, getting in free, walk past the poor saps queuing up to get in? That's status too.

Status scales.

We asked the same questions about the wrong crowd, the musical direction of a club, the people that make up the crowd, a good crowd vs a bad crowd, etc.

It's a business. No crowd = no money = no DJs. DJs like Digweed reach a pay scale where only certain clubs can afford to bring them in. You'll hardly see Digweed play in a club that can only support a 250 capacity.

completely irrelevant argument because once you past the door you blend with everyone else which is what the whole club thing is all about.... you know, mixing with your own, people with the same tastes, you know no people with the same idea's as you, not judging people by how big their wallets are etc etc

I defer to the wisdom below. Shall not contribute anymore nonsense to this.

FO I just checked flights to Orlando ... you're definitely on the MS list to meet. Will see how it goes.

#1708660Post 77 of 109

Re: Meetup - Digweed - Firestone - Orlando, FL

The mentality of 'classiness' within a club solely depends on what club you end up at. This surely goes without saying. If you go see someone who draws a crowd, at a club with a minimum entry of a collared shirt, and classy shoes it speaks the obvious. Albeit, you might experience a situation of a so called rooster sitting around tables, where that bigot shall be drinking the finest champagne,

Moreover. tables in a club I know for a fact is a great idea. It's a great place to just relax for a while, have a drink lessening your chance of spills, and really works magic when you drag your better half who chose to wore heals that night. It was funny when we use to go to a night out most of the girls we knew just had a dance now and then and sat to catch a breath and relax their heels. (I hope this doesn't spark a new debate on what is appropriate footwear for the dance floor).

Irrespective of age, sex, socio status, and what ever the fuck you are, you came to this club to enjoy the music that was to be played, unfortunately not every one can stand and dance and be up for a 7 hour set, which is why tables are and will always be lifesavers. I'm surprised no one has had a go at lounge music yet, those bars that offer a chilled vibe allowing people to socialise in a contemporary setting. Playing jazz house, and break beats.

There are two distinct discrepancies within this thread. Peoples assumption of a table in a club being a elitist setting and the distinctions between different clubs offering different experiences. What a shame that we have had to debate over this, and outshine a friendly gesture from a long term member inviting others to socialise (at the end of the day). Because really that is what it is...

#1708683Post 80 of 109

Re: Meetup - Digweed - Firestone - Orlando, FL

From the comments I see of people chiming in against the idea of having a table, it's not a sit-in restaurant type table with forks and knives, its a coffee table, just some place to put your drinks and a nice sofa to sit on. But it amazes me, not only because people here are being so vocal about it, it's more so that people are unwilling to accept a differing (clubbing) style in another country which they can't relate to.

And Audrey, sorry to call you out but you have been rather aggressive (and apparently confused) with your arguments in this thread, firstly directing them towards FO, then towards having a table, and then towards the general dynamic of the clubbing scene in the U.S.

If no one is interested in joining FO in Florida and has nothing to add to his invite, then please leave this thread alone. Don't need this unnecessary and uncalled for bickering.
