How about some of the older (2000-2006) Desyn Masiello sets.. can some of those be considered deep house, or are those strictly house beats ?

This is definitely deep house.

But it isn't garage, or what many are calling deep house on here. But nearly every one of those tracks are listed by the artist/label as 'deep house'.

I find 90% of my stuff in the deep house section on beatport etc. these days.

Re: When you think of deep house...

I posted something last year on the bedrock forum, these were all deep house tracks, but everyone said they were more progressive.

My point was they were all in the deep house section of beatport etc. as labeled by the artists and labels...

Re: When you think of deep house...

I could be here all day saying dj names.

Yes there are certain types of music that are coming under the deep house umbrella these days, just really comes down to your own definition of it.

The majority of the artists and labels i follow on Soundcloud are in the "Deep House" bracket but they are all different in their own right.

The beauty of the music i suppose......8)

Really loving this mix, not hearing much deep house tho :)

current deep house is mostly stuff that sounds like it could've been released in 1992

Yah, I don't know, I think I may have personally over done it with Desyn mixes during that time period. I haven't felt compelled to revisit any of his mixes. But perhaps I should, starting with his Balance mix :)

Re:
Really loving this mix, not hearing much deep house tho :)
But that is my point.

Back in 1990 it was broken down into 2 types of sound.

Garage and Hardcore.

The Garage sound is what a lot of you guys are calling Deep House now.

However, as the Raves started to slow down, as the police were killing the scene the sound of garage and hardcore started to combine somewhat, we started to get less breakbeat and rare groove and more of a 4 4 beat combining the sounds from hardcore and the sounds from garage, this was called house.

Listen to early Sasha sets, he would play garage with hardcore with some acid and then back to some dark techno, but was a house DJ.

As the club scene grew we starred to get DJs that would specialise in certain genres, you would have a garage room where they played pretty much nothing but garage (what you're calling deep house), but the main rooms were house. The house sound changed, not only over time but also depending where you were from. In '92 I guess, if you went to a club up north, Hacienda or Shelleys the house sound had more of a garage feel to it, lots of Italian stuff with Pianos and vocals and hands in the air stuff, but go down to London and the sound was a lot more techie, some deep dark beats with acid sounds and techno vocals. But you would also have rooms playing a deeper, funkier, more sassy groove, still quite techie down south but not dark like the main rooms, and definitely not garage, it was deep house and it was very different to garage.

That set from Digweed above to me is Deep House, look at the tracks on beatport, all classed as Deep House.

The problem seems to be that Deep House as a name is now really misused, by pretty much everyone.

The thing is the garage sound changed over time too, the drum and bass crowd combined garage for a more vocal melodic jungle sound, it was garage but played at 140bpm instead of 120bpm and with a breakbeat instead of a 44 beat.

To me, Deep House is simply house, all variations, that have a deeper more sassy groove going on.

Isn't that what Digweed is trying to do these days.. blending several different styles into one during his sets.. I think that it works very well. And he is still considered a house DJ, despite the fact that he seems to play lots of techno as well.
Yah, I don't know, I think I may have personally over done it with Desyn mixes during that time period. hah same here... the last one of his that I enjoyed was the mix for "jimbo and felix" or something like that, and I haven't played any of his sets ever since. I wasn't sure if his sets can be classified as "deep house" and with all the info gizze is providing ..its getting even harder :D

^good call on the "for jimbo and felix" mix, that i would like to revisit!

well colored me a little lost ... gizze your posts are educating me and definitely informative reads. I love the vibe of the digweed mix you posted, but to me it sounded like a progressive house mix, but that's how little I know. :). I tend to lean toward house mixes that have jazz, soul, funk, breakbeat influences. And I guess sassy :).

Re: When you think of deep house...

I'd also recommend Lazy Dog 1 & 2 from Jay Hannan and Ben Watt (from EBTG). These are both great mixes from the early 2000's. And like Gizze is stating above, these are classified as Deep / Garage on the Discogs site too. :)

@Gizze:

listen from 22 minutes to 24 minutes ... Simon Dunmore discusses London currently, etc, regarding House and Soulful house with vocals.

thoughts?

I guess I relate more to the younger crowd of listeners, because the soulful vocal sound is what I enjoy personally as well.

Re: When you think of deep house...

i was listening today to this set and all the time during that mix i thought ''oh yeah, that's the typical modern new skool deep house sound..'' So today's deep house is more nu-disco,indie dance type of sound and not so garage..but its all good =)

If you take 100 random people and play them some form of 'deep' house, whether it is deep progressive, deep tech, deep chilled, deep soul, etc. you will probably get them moving, nice music is just nice music, get a good bassline going on that makes people want to move and they will move, throw in a decent vocal and it will get even the non house fans moving too. Take those same 100 people and play them the sets that many rave about on here and you will be lucky to get 20 of them into it.

I said in a post before, if I was playing to a crowd I didn't know, I would gamble on a box full of Maceo but wouldn't dare risk a box full of Maetrik.

I think you have got to be really into your dance to be able to listen to a lot of the stuff that is posted on here, alot of the time it is heads down, testosterone fuelled beats, which is also the reason you get a lot more blokes at nights out than girls, however, look at the boiler room videos when there is a decent DJ playing deep house, full of girls.

I think a lot of the negative comments on some of the sounds that are back at the moment, lots of vocals with a more soulful vibe, are also bit strange. It is almost like people can only like one type of house music. I just don't get that, I love house, but I don't want to listen to Techno sitting around at home with my wife, and at the same time I do love some pretty techie feeling progressive when I am under the influence.

Not many DJs that I actually listen to anymore, Ricky Ryan seems to do no wrong, and even got a few people who are not into dance into his sets, now he is what I would call a deep house DJ, but he is deep house without it ever feeling cheesy, or like something in the charts, he has a tech edge that feels like it is music for the 'beautiful people'. I love Digweed when he is playing his more laid back stuff, Cavo Paradiso and Punto Del Este, CD1 and CD2 of Live in London, but not so keen on his harder stuff anymore, I still like Sasha, but can't be doing with that ping pong type delay he puts on everything. The people I like more than that are some of the guys who post on here, tighter sets and a lot of the time a more laid back at home groove, and considering I am listening to most of these sets at home that works for me.

My daughter is 18, I was 21 when I had her, and partying hard at the time, she has grown up with 1210's in the house and me playing House, but she has never been into it, but, she now lives in London and has started to go to some decent nights out, but they are playing deep house, cool deep house, and stuff that I would play myself, they all love it. Deep house will appeal to far more people than tech house or progressive or trance or tribal or any of that other stuff because more than anything else they are proper songs a lot of the time. It was when she was back at Easter and I was playing one of my mixes and that Feeling Blue track from Silicone Soul came on that she said "I love this track, played it last night when we were down at brick lane." I replied 'So you're into your house now??" Her answer was "I like all decent music."

Silicone Soul - Feeling Blue (Kultrun Remix) - YouTube

It just seems that you don't have to be off your head to get Deep House in the way you might to get into many other sorts of house. That is probably why a lot of the hands in the air EDM stuff is so big in the States, it is more like rock, alcohol will get you there with that stuff.

I was into pills long before I was into house, the raves were just a place to go and do pills, I didn't get into the music, and I mean properly into it, until I started listening to Ssaha, Digweed, Smokin Jo, Treble D, Fabio and all of those guys were playing lots more vocals. Remember that Digweed played on his essential mix Bjork, Yello etc. loads of vocals and deep basslines.

This was one of Sasha's hits...

D ream - U R The Best Thing (sasha full edit) - YouTube

That was UK pop music. So when I hear people say 'Sasha has lost his way.' I just laugh, he has gone back to what he was doing in the early days. Not saying that is deep house, but I reckon if you played that in a club it would get people moving far more than anything from his stuff from 96-2008.

Deep House can only be good for the dance scene imho, otherwise house will slowly die off.

I wouldn't really call Involv3r soulful as such, I think it has some really deep elements, but not really soulful.

+1000

I love more laid back vocal house and more chill stuff is what I honestly like listening to anymore (guess I'm getting old heh). I want to take some of my friends up to Chicago and hit up a proper nightclub with soundsystem and dj, but I'm going to be taking the girls to a Miguel Migs show, no way I'd take them to see Digweed, they would hate it.

#1683103Post 66 of 78

Re: When you think of deep house...

I would have to agree as well.. very few of my friends like the hard stuff, and pretty much non of my female friends. Mark Farina seems to be a hit with the ladies as well as Migs.. so when I have a mixed group of people, we just do that and everyone is happy.

I am actually afraid to recommend the new live in Slovenia mix to any of my friends because I know that no one will understand. I think that's why I really like this board.. unless I am at party, this is the only place i can find people with like minded appreciation of music. I know.. sad, but true.

For example last week I was at a friends party, and everyone there liked EDM.. they are all kind of taking turns playing stuff on youtube, so they wanted me to play something and i played one of tracks from the the upcoming Slovinia mix.. yaaa..no.. "its too repetitive.., etc"

Most of the girls were from SF and they were all kept talking about "glitch" ... i don't even know what that is.. but they kept playing stuff that was apparently "glitchy" ..

I love deep house, but since I kind of missed the scene in the mid 90s to 2007-8, I am still enjoying the progressive/tech stuff quite a bit as well..

#1690053Post 75 of 78

Re: When you think of deep house...

I think it has combined, a lot of the deep house sounds like progressive played at 122bpm. In fact play some of the older 130bpm progressive at 120bpm and it will fit into many a deep house set no problem at all.
