Who are the first dj's and/or producers that come to YOUR mind?

Looking for some solid recommendations for a friend, cheers.

And just for opening this thread, I've got a little treat for you... a really cool deep and funky house mix by my good friend Pete out of Los Angeles.

Re: When you think of deep house...

its a difficult definition to make as deep house cover a wide range of music... so much has been placed into the deep house category

Franklin De Costa Rene Breitbarth Tom Ellis

All can, and do, play techno, but when they play deep style they're my favorites.

I guess so.... but same could be said for Techno... since "deep house" is newer than "techno" perhaps it's still being defined? Notice I said "NEWER" not "NEW." Before anybody wants to tell me it's 100 years old .

no truthfully -places like fagport oops i meant beatport truly have fucked everything up, now guetta tunes are classed as progressive house etc... so now people who are getting into the scene have absolutely no idea what they are listening too

Re: When you think of deep house...

Sven Weissman, Jimpster, Shur-I-kan, matt masters are my go to guys at the moment.

Pablo Bolivar made some gems a few years ago, deep house but more prog roots (dark synth sounds) than the disco or funk sampled sound...if that makes sense.

Re: When you think of deep house...

Re: When you think of deep house...

A lot of the funky vocal stuff that many call deep house was garage when I started going out in '89. House was a more tech led sound around my area and as you went further up north it was more, melodic, the northern DJs were playing Italian House, hands up in the air stuff called house, where as the London DJs were playing a more industrial tech sounding set, again called house, there was quite a divide, but both were house and neither of them garage (what many call deep house now).

The garage/deep house sound came about from the rare groove stuff, many of the guys and girls in the garage/deep house rooms were the old northern soul crowd, it was Motown with a four four beat.

Deep house now to me is a anything with a melodic groove going on, it can be garage, progressive, tech, techno or regular house, the deep bit is the melodic sassy groove as far as I am concerned.

No.

But it isn't really my sound, not in the way many perceive it, never floated my boat too much.

Although, people like Dana I like, and I would call that deep, same with Ricky Ryan, he is deep but keeps that tech feel rather than a soul groove.

Re:

Not to start any genre wars but some of the djs mentioned are far from the deep house spectrum, IMO. I tend to lean toward Masters at Work, Farley & Heller, Sunshine Jones, David Morales, Tony Humphries, Frankie Knuckles, & Marshall Jefferson just to name a few.

Re: When you think of deep house...

I sent my friend the timewriter and TLB jr mixes, no real response... then I sent him Saccao - Deep House Amsterdam Mixtape #058 and told him to listen to the rest of the mixes from "Deep House Amsterdam" and "Melbourne Deepcast." That way he at least knows the majority of the mixes will be "deep house." ;) He really enjoyed the Saccao mix, which is the style of deep house I enjoy the most as well. If anyone could sort out the different styles of Deep House, that would be interesting to understand.

Well, it's a little difficult to explain, the "deep house" from 2000 it's very different to the "deep house" on this age, The music changes, and the genres has internal changes too, but a elemental factor. for me, are the slow bpm.

They were called garage DJ's back in the day though.

Some great stuff though.

While I thought that was garage, this to me was deep......
