Re: John Digweed live in?

Alright guys, so I got this CD in the mail and have tried listening in my car. I just don't get this techy vibe at all. I felt exactly the same way the last time I saw Digweed in person. Boring, repetitive, way too techy. I guess I'm getting too old because I definitely miss the style of music he played 10-15 years ago. Of course, my favorite part of a Digweed set is usually the first hour and I realize this CD cuts straight to peak time, but I honestly can't even listen to this. There's no life in this music, no soul, no emotion.

I'm going to try to give it another chance, but I really don't know if I can even bear to leave it playing without skipping ahead or turning it off.

LOL track 3 CD1 was atrocious, wort track on both disks imo.

2-3 on cd1 is the worst mixing transition also, you sure you got the right two tracks?

I like Cordoba and London a lot better, especially London.... but I definitely prefer the first half of those albums, too.

Yeah, that's Siopsis Buy Underground, which would be better if they left out that stupid spoken vocal. Cool track, otherwise.

#1684379Post 171 of 221

Re: John Digweed live in?

agreed, the vocal is what kills it.

#1684380Post 172 of 221

Re: John Digweed live in?

Yeah I don't really like the vocals on that track either, would be a lot better without it.

absolutely, perception and tastes are highly subjective based on a litany of variables.

This is a club set it's a club track. Good danceable vibe, a vocal to mix things up and breakdowns.

Remember Diggers is playing to a crowd and getting a reaction ... whether the place is rocking and he wants to wind it down a bit to bring the energy back up .. or it could be a 'test the water' track .. as in lets see what the reaction is and take it from here. That's the art of Dj'ing .. working out the room, sensing how you music is going to work and picking the right tracks to help make it a great night.

Also I do like the Siopis stuff ...

yeah its weird but for me the track 2-3 transition on cd1 sounds like a mini trainwreck and sounds a bit out of dial, then those vocals which are rough

diff stroke for diff folks so they say, the rest of this comp is slamming though, cant get over how hard it rocks

Re: John Digweed live in?

I still can't listen past track 3 or 4 on Disc 1. It's not music to me. Just repetitive, techy crap.

Live In London is way better to my ears. :)

Re: John Digweed live in?

maybe so. but cant say nothing bad about cd2, that one just hammers! happy digs gave us a nice glimpse of the peak.

I would only be able to listen to the London part. Digweed has always been one of my favorite DJs in the world, but I don't like the direction he has taken his peak hour sound as of late. I'm not a big fan of techno except perhaps in tiny doses. It's fine if you want to throw in a techno track here and there to have some variation.... but when you just play one after another after another it just bores the life out of me. I need some semblance of musicality, whether it's a groovy bassline, a vocal, or some melodic elements.

Now, that being said, I understand that this set was played to an eastern european crowd and, from what I can tell over my years of experience with this music, those people just don't have the same taste in music as people do in the UK. I guess my taste is more like the people attending the Live In London set.

I hear you, his peak time can get pretty hard and tough with the techno, experienced that for myself at one of the Bedrock parties, I actually found it quite fatiguing!

You might want to check out his latest Kiss live set from the boat. Digweed and Winks' sets were proper build ups.

Re: John Digweed live in?

I think that the techno or "hard" is not the best part of digweed. When He play that kind of stuff is like a ball of incomprehensible sounds and can be tiring to hear and dance. A simple opinion, I like the some techno stuff but not all the time.

I'm glad I'm not alone in this. I was getting worried that I'm too old for this stuff anymore. haha

^ I don't think the heavy techno translates well from the club to listening at home.

Depends if you've had a few glasses of wine, I played both CDs of a night time settled down with a nice bottle of vino, great stuff

Embrace the variety, Cordoba and CDs 1 & 2 of London are attuned to home listening, the other discs for the car / gym / walk to work as there's more pace to them.

Have to say Structures 1 & 2 still sound great at home.

#1688089Post 193 of 221

Re: John Digweed live in?

I think there's enough variety out there and this release completes the Digweed repertoire. If anything, I wish this was at least a 3 or 4 CD release with earlier discs leading to dancefloor demolishment.

If we ever get a full night of Bedrock that has him warm up, peak time, and end with the old school, I can hang up my dancing shoes.

Re: John Digweed live in?

This Live series proves how versatile of a DJ John Digweed is.I think in years to come when I look back I can just choose a CD to suit my mood, it is a stamp in time how Diggers in his later climax in the post norties can still manage to deliver.

Albeit, regular Transitions listeners have a fair share of the 'live' feeling there's nothing set as concrete as listening to a disc release.

Slovenia reminds me of circa pre-2000's JD. Just absolute pure tech driven explosions in the sky from the word go.

I admit so far from his Live series Cordoba would still have to be my favorite, bypassing London. London was a mighty fine mix, but something about Cordoba just connected in the right wave length.

So... as I have a paper due this Friday, and this weekend being a long weekend here in Aus. Not only was i meant to go see JD & Anthony Pappa live belting it out for 7 hours straight, It was rather disappointing hearing CD 2 of Slovenia being a little too intense (probably due to my current context).

Di, if you ever see this, please don't rub it in my sad little face of how amazing your night will be. Think of me with Early Grey cups of tea and fake Jaffa Cakes (the only ones I can find) having a Live JD slush fest on the media player setlist.
