Re: I'll live with the TSA, I just don't understand mass-murder
Sure some other psycho will find another way, but at least that psycho will have one LESS option in his arsenal. Is that not worth it?
True... it would make it more difficult, but not impossible.. they can still find a gun, or find another way to hurt other people. Violence seems to be deeply ingrained in the human psyche, otherwise we won't have cases like this. I know that to most of us can't even begin to grasp what went trough his mind, and the drive behind it.. but as scary as this is, I will bet anyone that there is someone out there right now that is probably saying "oh, ya... I can see his point.. " and there is absolutely nothing you could do about where that might lead, or whatever.
I'd take this a step further and say that it's not so much to restrict access to nutcases as much as it is having something so readily available and accessible that can end someone's life when someone becomes upset or angered.
A lot of people die from stabbings every year.. what do you propose we do about that ? I am not saying that the scale is comparable, but.. you see my point. You can buy I knife from a pet store. You really can't prevent a violent mind from acting on its impulses by taking away the probable tools.. the list is endless. It will be more like damage control, simply because that same violence needs to manifest itself out somehow. What I am saying is that the problem is much, much deeper than stricter gun control. I guess if we were that evolved as a species, guns wouldn't even exist. Don't forget that the second world war was only 70 years ago... so.. we have problems. But yes.. I agree, we should start somewhere.

What an absolute tragedy. My heart goes out to the families of the children. No parent deserves to bury their child. Thats not the order of things.

It's not the same thing - you're comparing apples to oranges, and with a knife you have to get up close to the person, it's way easier to kill a person from a distance and with that distance you're able to dehumanize a person moreso than when you're up close and in their face with a knife. Unless you're very skilled with a knife or land a lucky shot, it's more difficult to kill someone than with a gun. Compare stabbings to shootings in the United States and you still have a huge difference in numbers, heavily in favor of shootings. Hell, compare the survival rates of both and you'll see more people surviving stabbings over shootings. The link that was provided about the Chinese stabbings and 22 wounded just illustrates that.

Re: I'll live with the TSA, I just don't understand mass-murder

The kid was not right mentally, the brother hadn't even talked with Adam in years, and they were close in age. I think this kid was living in some kind of derranged metal hell and had open access to a bunch of weapons. This has got to be the beginning of some change in our society where kids like these are no longer ignored and parents who own more than a BB gun are checked up on by police...kinda like fire extinguishers are checked in classrooms. My dad owns about 7 guns for hunting. I never had any idea on how to access any of them growing up.

It's kinda simple to me. Given a choice I'd face a knife than a gun anytime.

in the state where I live Florida we are about to issue our one millionth concealed weapons permit. that means 1 out of every 19 people in FLA are packing heat and you dont know it. what is this country coming to.

i recently read that semi automatic weapons (like the ones in the shooting) where banned in the US up till 2004 when it then expired. might be a good place to start.

Re: I'll live with the TSA, I just don't understand mass-murder
Let me tell you a story. The day after Columbine, I was interviewed for the Tom Brokaw news program. The reporter had been assigned a theory and was seeking sound bites to support it. "Wouldn't you say," she asked, "that killings like this are influenced by violent movies?" No, I said, I wouldn't say that. "But what about 'Basketball Diaries'?" she asked. "Doesn't that have a scene of a boy walking into a school with a machine gun?" The obscure 1995 Leonardo Di Caprio movie did indeed have a brief fantasy scene of that nature, I said, but the movie failed at the box office (it grossed only $2.5 million), and it's unlikely the Columbine killers saw it.

The reporter looked disappointed, so I offered her my theory. "Events like this," I said, "if they are influenced by anything, are influenced by news programs like your own. When an unbalanced kid walks into a school and starts shooting, it becomes a major media event. Cable news drops ordinary programming and goes around the clock with it. The story is assigned a logo and a theme song; these two kids were packaged as the Trench Coat Mafia. The message is clear to other disturbed kids around the country: If I shoot up my school, I can be famous. The TV will talk about nothing else but me. Experts will try to figure out what I was thinking. The kids and teachers at school will see they shouldn't have messed with me. I'll go out in a blaze of glory."

In short, I said, events like Columbine are influenced far less by violent movies than by CNN, the NBC Nightly News and all the other news media, who glorify the killers in the guise of "explaining" them. I commended the policy at the Sun-Times, where our editor said the paper would no longer feature school killings on Page 1. The reporter thanked me and turned off the camera. Of course the interview was never used. They found plenty of talking heads to condemn violent movies, and everybody was happy.
the military industrial complex is huge here. We make the weapons, sell them to other countries thereby creating the demand to engineer newer better weapons. The cycle is endless.

Nothing anymore. But when I was growing up we would turkey hunt before Thanksgiving. He wasn't a big hunter, but we have a lot of land with hogs, pheasant, doves, duck, etc. He mostly hunted turkey, some pheasant, a few hog hunting trips, and duck a couple times. He was never a deer hunter.

Re: I'll live with the TSA, I just don't understand mass-murder

Stuff like this is absolutely heartbreaking. Every time I hear about this on the news I cry....I can't even imagine what would posess someone to do something so senseless....those poor sweet angels and the brave teachers who lost their lives trying to save as many as they could....utterly heartbreaking.

i don't understand why the gun laws haven't changed in the US. I know the NRA has a lot of power and control in the government, but even the members need to see it is time for a change....life isn't the same as when the constitution was written.

Re: I'll live with the TSA, I just don't understand mass-murder

This sums it up .... exactly how I was feeling and unable to express.

Darrell Scott, the father of Rachel Scott, a victim of the Columbine High School shootings in Littleton, Colorado, was invited to address the House Judiciary Committee's sub-committee.What he said to our national leaders during this special session of Congress was painfully truthful. They were not prepared for what he was to say, nor was it received well. It needs to be heard by every parent, every teacher, every politician, every sociologist, every psychologist, and every so-called expert! These courageous words spoken by Darrell Scott are powerful, penetrating, and deeply personal. There is no doubt that God sent this man as a voice crying in the wilderness. The following is a portion of the transcript:"Since the dawn of creation there has been both good & evil in the hearts of men and women. We all contain the seeds of kindness or the seeds of violence. The death of my wonderful daughter, Rachel Joy Scott, and the deaths of that heroic teacher, and the other eleven children who died must not be in vain. Their blood cries out for answers." "The first recorded act of violence was when Cain slew his brother Abel out in the field. The villain was not the club he used. Neither was it the NCA, the National Club Association. The true killer was Cain, and the reason for the murder could only be found in Cain's heart. "In the days that followed the Columbine tragedy, I was amazed at how quickly fingers began to be pointed at groups such as the NRA.I am not a member of the NRA. I am not a hunter. I do not even own a gun. I am not here to represent or defend the NRA - because I don't believe that they are responsible for my daughter's death. Therefore I do not believe that they need to be defended. If I believed they had anything to do with Rachel's murder I would be their strongest opponent.""I am here today to declare that Columbine was not just a tragedy-it was a spiritual event that should be forcing us to look at where the real blame lies! Much of the blame lies here in this room.Much of the blame lies behind the pointing fingers of the accusers themselves. "I wrote a poem that expresses my feelings best. This was written way before I knew I would be speaking here today:"
Your laws ignore our deepest needs, Your words are empty air. You've stripped away our heritage, You've outlawed simple prayer. Now gunshots fill our classrooms, And precious children die. You seek for answers everywhere, And ask the question "Why?" You regulate restrictive laws, Through legislative creed. And yet you fail to understand, That God is what we need!
"Men and women are three-part beings. We all consist of body, soul, and spirit. When we refuse to acknowledge a third part of our make-up, we create a void that allows evil, prejudice, and hatred to rush in and reek havoc. Spiritual influences were present within our educational systems for most of our nation's history. Many of our major colleges began as theological seminaries. This is a historical fact. What has happened to us as a nation? We have refused to honor God, and in so doing, we open the doors to hatred and violence. And when something as terrible as Columbine's tragedy occurs politicians immediately look for a scapegoat such as the NRA. They immediately seek to pass more restrictive laws that contribute to erode away our personal and private liberties. We do not need more restrictive laws." Eric and Dylan would not have been stopped by metal detectors. No amount of gun laws can stop someone who spends months planning this type of massacre. The real villain lies within our own hearts.Political posturing and restrictive legislation are not the answers. The young people of our nation hold the key. There is a spiritual awakening taking place that will not be squelched! We do not need more religion. We do not need more gaudy television evangelists spewing out verbal religious garbage. We do not need more million dollar church buildings built while people with basic needs are being ignored. We do need a change of heart and a humble acknowledgment that this nation was founded on the principle of simple trust in God!" "As my son Craig lay under that table in the school library and saw his two friends murdered before his very eyes, He did not hesitate to pray in school. I defy any law or politician to deny him that right!I challenge every young person in America, and around the world, to realize that on April 20, 1999, at Columbine High School prayer was brought back to our schools. Do not let the many prayers offered by those students be in vain. Dare to move into the new millennium with a sacred disregard for legislation that violates your God-given right to communicate with Him. To those of you who would point your finger at the NRA- I give to you a sincere challenge.Dare to examine your own heart before casting the first stone! My daughter's death will not be in vain! The young people of this country will not allow that to happen!"

Re: I'll live with the TSA, I just don't understand mass-murder

gotta disagree with you there Florida. Its unlikely IF this guy had an Autism Spectrum Disorder, that it would of caused this level of violence. People on the spectrum very rarely conduct planned violence and very unlikely they use weapons (any aggression is likely to be very short due to frustration). Its far more likely that a psychotic disorder was at the root of this. Someone who has lost touch with what is real.

There is a really good NYtimes peice on the ASD and lack of planned violence link here: http://www.nytimes.com/2012/12/18/health/fearing-a-stigma-for-people-with-autism.html?_r=1&

Re: I'll live with the TSA, I just don't understand mass-murder

Doesn't Asperger's Syndrome simply mean that a person suffering from it doesn't pick up on social cues as easily as the rest of the us, which in essence makes them less easy to get alongwith because of the absurdity of their behavior? If true, I can't imagine it being so drastic so want to go on a mass-murdering spree. These people still have the ability to judge right from wrong, they just don't know the communicative / interactive boundaries as well as the rest of us.

John this statement is so wrong and I pray that people don't start buying into this bullshit. My son has asperger's and if anyhting feels empathy to an extreme. As a new father I pray that you and your family don't have to endure what we have been thru. These kids need help and the chance to succeed, not to be stereotyped and judged. This is my son Brady who was diagnosed with severe autism @ 18months old. We were told he may never speak, or function in society, and could possibly have to live in a home. After intensive therapy and services he now is working on grade level and has many friends and excels in sports. I could write pages on here about how much he and his journey has taught us but am so disgusted by your statement that will have to come in time. Re: I'll live with the TSA, I just don't understand mass-murder

I would add that we were fortunate. My son had services 5days a week, 3 times a day from the age of 18months till 3. Then attended a special preschool where he received the same types of services. None of this cost my family a dime. A major issue is that in lots of areas in the usa parents get the same diagnosis and have to go on a waiting list to receive these services or pay out of pocket wich will cost a fortune. Imagine having someone give you this news and you have to watch your child struggle because you can't afford it. the most important thing is to catch it early and intensive therapy. The rates of kids being diagnosed is rapidly increasing and our country and healthcare field needs to do something about it imo.

I know it wasn't your intent John. So many strides have been made I'm just scared it will go backwards. With the right tools at their disposal so many kids on the autism spectrum have come so far. I just wish they all had the same opportunity.

Act I: The Dumbening

At :30, in a hint at what’s about to happen, Jones gets things started by changing the subject completely, and then crafting a disconnected slew of sentence fragments. At 2:10-2:36, Alex threatens to burn America to the ground if he doesn't get his way. At 2:50, Alex reminds Piers (for the first of many times) that Americans once fought a war against the British. Piers responds with the kind of scathing, passive-aggressive restraint that the British have spent centuries mastering. At 3:48, Alex talks about marine biology. At 4:25, Alex talks about his favorite part of "Mad Max." At 6:40, Piers gives up on getting anything coherent out of him.

Act II: All Aboard The Conspiracy Train

From 0-0:18, Piers suggests calming things down and actually having something resembling a coherent conversation. And then Alex starts speaking again, thus anything resembling healthy discourse ceases to exist. At 1:33, Alex thinks an AR-15 will protect him from the largest military in the world and accuses all American soldiers of being potential traitors. Also, HITLER. At 2:35, no judgment here, I just want to transcribe what Jones just managed to say, “A study out of Hawaii killed 292 million people.” He also requests that you google "Democide", so for balance sake, click here. At 4:22, Alex quotes his favorite part of "Soylent Green" or "Dawn of the Dead." From 4:51-5:40, Piers decides to let America in on the inner workings of Alex's brain. At 5:40 … 5:40. Don’t cheat and skip ahead to this. Just be ready for it. Trust me on this one. It's like "Masterpiece Theatre." Aaaaand at 6:27, Piers finally says what the rest of us are thinking.
