Re: Curiosity has landed
Australians drink tea? Maybe they should've sent curiosity down-under on a Trivia and fun-fact gathering mission. I'd drink to that.
Re: Curiosity has landed
Yeah me too, wouldn't have cost anywhere near as much and they may have got some information that was actually usable in the real world.
Australians definitely drink tea, probably all those english convicts in our past . ;)

Being an astronomy buff, someone once asked me, why would you spend Billions of Dollars to go to a Rocky Dusty Planet where there's nothing there, I asked them the same question in a different way, why would you spend Thousands of Dollars of your own hard earned money and go sit by the sea and stare at it or go stand to the edge of a beautiful waterfall, just to watch the water drop.
It's the same fundamental (other than taking a holiday) i.e. fulfill your sense of discovery and adventure. Of course when the budget is so much greater, there's a lot farther you can go with it.
Moreover, reading the statement "got some information that was actually usable in the real world.", well that tells me one of 2 things, what they have found and bought back on previous missions was of little / no interest to you or you haven't taken a holiday in a really long time :p
Re: Curiosity has landed
The more i look at the pics, the more i think it really is in Australia anyways.
I hear you Kamal about the adventure and the discovery and the quest for knowledge. But do you not think a little more effort righting the wrongs we create on Earth would be in order before jetting off to fuck somewhere else up? I take your analogy of the holiday but would you go on holiday while your kids were starving at home?
Re: Curiosity has landed
^there is still a lot of money and a lot of people trying to fix problems here on earth, so that isn't being ignored....
Re: Curiosity has landed
^^^ But think just how much more could be done. We might even be able to actually fix some of those problems :)
@ Bobjuice Thank you, couldn't have said it better myself.
It really gets to me that we seem to be looking for a new home because we are trashing the current one.
Kamal I find beauty around me everyday right here on earth. I discover things every day, an ordinary life can have adventures. I don't think most people would consider me unadventurous.
I do understand that people can feel a sense of wonder that these things are happening , but for me the cost is just too high, and I don't mean the actual financial so much as the cost in human sacrifice.
And it does look like outback Australia . Can we get another conspiracy theory happening here.
^there is still a lot of money and a lot of people trying to fix problems here on earth, so that isn't being ignored....
So you fly off and let your kids starve as long as you've left some money in a drawer somewhere (more than enough to feed them, they just need to find it) and you hope that someone else will put some effort into keeping them alive so you don't have to? Is that not the same?
Re: Curiosity has landed
Finding a new home and trashing the current one? Is that what you made of the Mars Exploration Project?
As far as fixing things here on earth, you're making comparisons that don't even belong in the same sentence. Starving people and Space Exploration? Really? Blanketing noble agendas by suffocating other meaningful areas of progress is definitely the way to go. Why don't we fire all the brightest people in the world who have worked hard to get us to witness some of the most remarkable achievements of mankind so we can start feeding the needy.
People are hurting and suffering and injustice happens all over the world, but that should never stop life from moving forward.
From the face of the arguments, everyone is happy to sit and point fingers at others for not doing enough but how much has anything been done on a personal basis and changed things within their immediate vicinity, for the greater good - all it seems to be so far is harping about it on the internet.
This is the kind of of sentiment that affects this board, let's all sit and cry about the world and make sure no progress is achieved because until all the problems are resolved, there's no sense in doing anything meaningful and spending on anything else. And while we're at it, let's all go club and listen to electronic music.
Very cool.

id love to go to space, when i have achieved everything else in life....and i think theres also alot more to explore in earth, its not like all earth secrets have been already discovered.
the only thing more important than science is meaningful science that benefits humans

So of us aren't hypocrites , we do actually do things, it is a part of our life, we don't feel the need to inappropriately boast about it on music sites.
Last time I looked dying was not considered as moving forward with life, and too many people are doing just that and in ways most of can't imagine.
the only thing more important than science is meaningful science that benefits humans
Just for the record, It's the balance of the way that the money is spent that I object to. We humans need art, adventure, space travel, and of course music of all kinds etc. to inspire us. But we do need to care about our fellow human beings better.
If everyone stopped to try and "solve" some arbitrary problem like hunger....well there would be a lot less human advancement in the world out there as there is now. Every "bad" problem in the world isn't going to be able to be solved first, let along agreed upon being worth solving to ever make something like this a reality. It is a nice and grand gesture, but it doesn't work like that in the real world unfortunately. So the scientists who are working on their own set of problems in their areas of expertise should just keep on it IMO.
Re: Curiosity has landed
"arbitrary problem like hunger" ??? Are you taking the piss?? That would be really funny if it wasn't so awful !!
"arbitrary problem like hunger" ??? Are you taking the piss?? That would be really funny if it wasn't so awful !!
Nope. There are a million problems in the world anyone could come up with on any given day that could be considered a problem that should be fixed before going to Mars. So there isn't any point in trying to fix all of the worlds problems first because that only happens in fairy tales. So letting the JPL and NASA folk continue doing something never done before is better than doing nothing because there are always going to be problems back home....that's just how it is unfortunately.

Do you come on here just to make your halo shine brighter? You sound like the Priest who taught me Moral Science in middle school. I do my share of charity as and when I can, but I have never ever ever had the need to make myself sound morally poetic and come on a forum and ridicule a healthy yet unrelated discussion.
And you're calling me out for accusing? I fail to see the accusation in my statement, in fact I'm simply defending a position which seems to have been taken on by you and a few others that is seemingly less important than feeding the needy. I sure see the point of not highlighting the good that you do in real life, on a music site, but then again, I have continuously failed to see your need to decidedly and deliberately badger a position that goes beyond your sense of reason, on a music site. Rather hypocritical don't you think? The word Troll jumps to mind rather aptly.
If hunger bugs you, start a different thread, don't try to drown every thread with your dilemmas.
And honey, if you've missed the gravy train already, money is the common denominator for EVERY SINGLE THING in this world, including you finding a way into this thread to make your point.
Just as Tiddles pointed out in his link, the logical deduction you can make by reading that page is that science in itself is meaningful. Rather oxymoronic to try and point out the difference. Just because you don't have the vision or have yet to experience the benefits of the purpose of the project, doesn't mean it isn't useful by any stretch of the imagination.
Smart minds at NASA have contributed their fair share of discoveries to the common man, just because you have yet to experience some of the products of their inventions doesn't make them any less useful to mankind.
Boy if the 2.4 Billion Dollar Curiosity expedition bugs you, then the 8.4 Billion Dollar LHC experiments must really get your goat, and little do you know that if you have ever had an MRI (or any other form or resonance imaging), you have already reaped the real world benefits of it.
So yes, please continue, let's argue with each other over hunger and diminish the incredible work that the incredible minds on this planet continue to do in the name of science.

Re: Curiosity has landed
The pie chart is a little vague in that it chooses to ignore the multi billion pound budgets of previous space expeditions and the investment in the space program over a period of 60 odd years, without which the mars mission wouldn't have been possible
Re: Curiosity has landed
The olympics have been in play since the late 1800s chief. 3 times longer than space missions and once every 4 years. Let's Pie-Chart that.
Re: Curiosity has landed
Relevant to my point how?
Re: Curiosity has landed
I don't agree with oscene amount of money thrown at the olympics either
Have the 2012 London olympics (to which the chart refers) been goin on since 1800s ? No
Is it possible to hold a sports event without having done it before? Yes Is it possible to just fly to mars with no space travel experience? No

Sorry to bust your delusional bubble, you have an issue with the Government giving 2 Billion to Nasa to go to Mars, I don't. There are no issues in MY head as far as the title of the thread goes "Curiosity has landed", but there sure are issues swirling in your head to draw parallels to hungry people.

If you want to draw a parallel to the fact that cumulative space research over 60 years has yielded to the ability to flying to Mars with an additional expense of 2 Billion on the Curiosity mission, then be fair and consider how much has been cumulatively expended towards the Olympics since the 1800s. Yes you don't need to have a prior held sports event, in order to hold it this time, but to spend on it again and again and again is far more senseless than just winging out a space mission on the first shot. And then if you pie-chart the expenses towards each Olympics from the date of inception, that should give you an answer with sufficient zeros to feed the world over.
