Re: Archives to be deleted...

^^^ Yeah, you probably have a more sensible attitude than some of us. We do take it too seriously. But we are what we are. :)

The disrespected etc remarks from me were more generic rather than specific, but from what I read superwave gave as good, or better , than he got
Actually if you had read my actual original post it was a lot meaner and I thought the better and edited it. But you just had to bring it back up, classy :)

Read what I wrote above. I tried to be nice, some of you read my original post before I decided why make it so personal :)

Tell you what, why don't you maintain and update it? Why don't you compile Resident show write ups and upload tagged MP3s while you're at it?

I'm sorry DD, this is where you just sound like you're arguing for the sake of it.

Why do I need Cloud Flipper if I've never thought enough of Soundcloud to visit before? Huh?

In the 21st century, I only have FOUR consistently open tabs in my browser. I access a lot of sites via RSS, I keep updated on Twitter. I subscribe to art blogs, industry news, technology news, manga, TV, music blogs, music download sites, AND NOW SOUNDCLOUD, so everything is easily perused in my Google Reader.

If you use RSS you'll understand how convenient it is. It's because you don't appreciate the convenience and you expect THE REST OF US TO USE THE WEB AND MS LIKE YOU DO, AND PROJECT YOUR OWN EXPECTATIONS ON TO US, that you find so many of the cool stuff on MS (and facebook for the matter) extraneous.

'Most' being Chunky and? Cos you know as well as everyone else I copy/paste/edit more than anyone else in the booby thread :)

The WYSWYG editor can be flaky but it's not entirely the fault of MS. This is what happens when you copy formated content from another site. This is what happens too if you tried to copy formated content from any source, into a word processor like Word. This is just WHAT HAPPENS.

I get around it pasting formated content into the MS editor, Select All, click Remove Format (second button from the top menu), and reformat the content using the MS editor.
   Answered like a true nerd  You have just proved another point of mine. You shouldn't have to do that all that !! We shouldn't even have to know what an WKSWYGn editor is, we are here for the music .

I'm not asking for anyone to give up their nerdy bits, I just don't want them shoved down my throat . The ability for individuals to turn them off, would be great. [like facebook  ] You use it the way you want, I use it the way I want, simple really. I'm really good at finding, recording, uploading, downloading music. That's the web I love. It's great that you get a kick out of all this stuff, I don't. That's what it is all about, we each take what we want.

The old "Well why don't you do it line" I don't do it because I don't want to ! I want to spend my time on the things that are important to me. Plus there are soo many people who could do it wonderfully. Perhaps you ?? :) But I do expect that if someone else claims they can do it, that it be done properly. I really forward to using the DJDB when it first started. Unfortunately there is nothing for me there.

Btw, it is not "nice" to write mean posts and then expect that taking them down makes it all better :D

Sorry but can't help this
I'm sorry DD, this is where you just sound like you're arguing for the sake of it.
Pot, kettle black ??? Although I prefer to call it debating ;)

One thing that has come from this discussion for me is that I really want MS to survive. I didn't think I did .It has made me look around and see just what is here and there is a lot that I don't utilise and would probably benefit from. It has been a very important part of my life at various times . I have made real friends here. I think we need to look at the big picture here, ask ourselves what we do want from MS and maybe help in getting that. But that is going to take a lot of listening from all of us.

Re: Archives to be deleted...

I am very simple: here for the music, nonsense and tv/ movie reviews.

Politics is mainly American along with the sport.

My search for more downloads of Hernan mixes lead me to MS in 2007 and I stayed around cause it was a great forum to listen to and read all the discussions and threads.

So to see the Hernan forum go will be like a little piece of history in me dying inside so I hope it doesn't but I have no idea what the results are if they stay for MS and the continuation of the site will be because of it (Thats how stupid I am when it comes to websites and the development thereof.) Its still my favourite site.

#1631951Post 86 of 182

Re: Archives to be deleted...

As if I wouldn't look after Hernan :) As long as I live and breath you will have access to Hernan's shows and sets, even from the nursing home

Btw, it's not the forum that is threatened at this stage , it's the archives, like all the old metrodance shows. Everything in the forum is stored uploaded outside MS .

Hernan brought me here in 2004.

Another btw , you are not stupid for not knowing web stuff, I bet if your life depended on it you would learn very quickly  It's what we want to do that is important.

Can you actually explain how I "just had to bring it back up"? I just actually quoted what I actually read. If you'd already actually edited it I wouldn't have been able to actually quote, would I?

Re: Archives to be deleted...

Maybe it's best I finally shut down the site so that this incessant "I can pee farther than you can on the internet" mindset that seems to have crept into the boards will dissipate. 10 years has been quite the run and I have enough on my plate and enough worries of keeping this place running (financially) that I need to have to come here and watch this crap go on time and time again, especially from the mature veterans. Very sad to see this place wither to bits like this.

Re: Archives to be deleted...

I think threehills has the best idea! I'd totally be willing to donate money to keep the archives on MS. It really is something special and it would be a huge shame to see it go.

What do you say Kamal...give us the option to donate for the specific purpose of keeping the archives?

#1632000Post 91 of 182

Re: Archives to be deleted...

I'll figure it out Chanty, I do appreciate all those who continue to donate, but it's still becoming more of a chore to manage the servers then anything else so the fewer machines I have to manage in the backend, the easier it will be.

#1632007Post 92 of 182

Re: Archives to be deleted...

What exactly does managing servers entail, I haven't the foggiest? But I'm curious to know if you have time to explain K.

I would probably cry if you did that...From what I hear I have missed the glory days of MS but this site is still gold for me...Its about time I pulled my act together and made a contribution...

Re: Archives to be deleted...

I think the demise of the archives is getting very close, it's starting to affect the webhosting of paying customers who are on here and I can't have that anymore. It'll likely come to an end in a month or so.

So for those of you who really want the archives, go ahead and grab it now while it's still hot.

Re: Archives to be deleted...

^Kamal how many GB's is it? I will rsync all of that shit to an EBS volume and keep it around for a while somewhere. Either there or in Glacier.

If I can get ssh access to the host again I can archive all of this stuff if you want under my AWS account.

Yeah, there are many free solutions, before erasing it all. I have a dedicated server myself, with plenty of un-used disk-space.

#1642601Post 100 of 182

Re: Archives to be deleted...

It's funny, because most of the sets in the archive section are uploaded to megaupload, so, one way or another are lost.

#1642602Post 101 of 182

Re: Archives to be deleted...

res0, its about 200 gb if I recall correctly.

#1642605Post 102 of 182

Re: Archives to be deleted...

Kamal is it possible to compress them into RARs and let us FTP them off the server? 200GB is easy with external hard drives these days.

#1642610Post 103 of 182

Re: Archives to be deleted...

No I cant turn it into RAR because there is not enough space on the machine to run the process. I just realized this (and I pm'ed res0 about it), we can't rsync the archives onto Amazon because all of the links will die. If someone has a dedicated server with that much space and can setup an MS subdomain on it, the archives might survive, otherwise someone will then have to manually update ALL the links to the sets and I don't believe anyone in their right mind would agree to do so.

#1642611Post 104 of 182

Re: Archives to be deleted...

yeah the quick solution i have above is just to get the data moved somewhere so it doesn't get lost. no web access for this as of now.

#1642613Post 105 of 182

Re: Archives to be deleted...

I'm taking a backup of it right now on a local external HD that I have, once I figure out how to distribute the space on the servers I have, I'll bring 'em back (partially if I have to).

Re: Archives to be deleted...

I'm contacting my admin, I think it can be done. Storing is not a problem, so don't delete anything. Sub-domain is a different story, we can sort that out later. Is this a Unix server?

#1642615Post 107 of 182

Re: Archives to be deleted...

Just realized that its a little smaller than I had thought (well we lost a large chunk when the other server went down). There's 1,865 sets at about 146 GB.

Re: Archives to be deleted...

Yes it's CentOS, the subdomain should be easy, just as you setup a website, setup a subdomain (if you're willing to do it). I'll setup the DNS pointer to the IP of your machine. Your webserver should automatically handle the rest.

Update: Not enough disk space for the whole package. (180 GB free)

I'm asking for an extra disk, if it's possible without switching plan.
