To conserve space on the server and with the hosting ailing, I'm seriously considering deleting the archives (in an effort to consolidate hosting accounts). I know people under 100 posts wont see the archives, those that sign up wont see them, and they wont be motivated enough to post enough to discover them, and the ones that do will probably spend another 3 years hitting 100. These make the archives...unnecessary (at least I feel).

If I get a certain number of positive responses to this thread, I'll keep 'em, if not, I'm gonna delete them.

Re: Archives to be deleted...

I am sure (at least in my case) most on here have downloaded most of those old shows so I dont see a problem deleting them to save space....

Maybe keep the birthday archive since its so small??

Re: Archives to be deleted...

^You're right it should be stored on someones external hard drive, I nominate Simon for that task .

Re: Archives to be deleted...

Since this Mercuryserver thing has been (mostly) about Digweed since day one, I think it's pretty cool that we're the only place that has all of his music archived, and very nicely archived with tracklists and direct links. Until this thread came up I hadn't looked at the Archive in a long long time. So I went there just now, and spent quite awhile looking through all the sets, tracklists, downloaded a few to relive a few memories, and just thought- wow, it's a really cool thing to have all of that music archived. If the archive goes, I think we will have lost a piece of Mercuryserver- one of those "didn't know what we had until it was gone" kinda feelings, but are we going to hold on to this stuff forever?? I dunno, and I'm glad I don't have to make that decision. I completely understand the financial burden and space all of that data consumes, so I'm cool with whatever decision is made. Definitely give some notice if you decide to dump it so as many people that want to can grab as many of those musical memories as they want.

Onward and Upward? Hmmm...just kinda feels like Onward, but it is what it is.

Re: Archives to be deleted...

Kamal, are you crazy ??? Dont delete the Hernan Metrodance archive. A part of history lives there, even, in the Digweed archive, if you delete that, it goes a part of us with that.

As I said before, if you want space, delete the Mass Shit uploads or something else.

Re: Archives to be deleted...

What simon said ! To me the archive is what makes MS still special. It's the only thing except basic posting and pms that I use. In this day and age , you need something that sets you apart from all the facebook type crap rather than trying to be more like them. Make it all about the music again. I really don't need to know what my "friends" are posting, and I wouldn't expect it on a serious music site if I did. I don't want totally inappropriate recommendations for Djs. If I wanted a DJDB it would be one with totally current bio's. I looked up John Digweed recently and his bio is 10 years old  It's speaking of coming up to the second year of Kiss 100 . It might surprise you how many people feel the same way I do, but they just go away rather than get involved in petty wars for daring to state the bleeding obvious. Or if you are female getting not so subtle references to pms. Or of course get banned. We have lost a lot of great members over the last couple years. :(

How much space does it take up.??? I'd be quite happy to invest in a couple of externals.

With you on that unkle ;)

To sum up, perhaps the whole site needs to be looked at to see if there are better ways to deal with the problem. Maybe run the site for music rather than nerds ?? A lot of the simple things don't work anymore. It's really annoying posting when editing etc doesn't work properly. Unfortunately for some, it doesn't stop me  Get back to the basics. !!! The Kiss principle :)

^those don't take up any real physical space as the data is hosted elsewhere. Kamal is actually hosting ALL the audio data and the bandwidth needed to support the Archives.

Re: Archives to be deleted...

Just read the poll bit, I think it probably needs more time for people to react. I could keep 200 gb of data on what I have, but would definitely need time to sort it out..

Dont see the point to hit 100 posts to have all-archives access in the first place.. Maybe with 50 posts youll get the same number of future regular members if its a combination of goals? Keep all of those musical MS trademark archives, defo this place wont be the same without Digweed or Hernan RadioShows.. just a tought

Can't say i've ever used it tbh. The question says should they be kept or should they go. The choice of answers is yes / no?

Re: Archives to be deleted...

Keep them. This isn't just about us. We're fighting against a future of noobs and morons who think dubstep is music.

Re: Archives to be deleted...

Is it hellz yea... keep the archive or hellz yea... get rid of the archive. Too confusing for my small brain. I'd pick keep the archives, anyway. Last few times I tried to get something from it I got 404s so I'm actually very happy that it is up again. Surely you can see how active it is Kamal? Can't it be moved to a cheap data only datacentre or something?

I know it is a turn off for a lot of people and essentially any forum needs active members, of all types :) You could make the archives a plus rather than deleting. Well actually it is a plus. The DJDB could also be a plus if it were up to date. Although I get most of my bio's from Soundcloud now. Sure you will get people signing up just to view the archives, but some will stick around.

#1631438Post 25 of 182

Re: Archives to be deleted...

I would say keep them, but i appreciate the costs in keeping them online.

Is there anyway to outsource them? Pay for a one off account and put them on soundcloud?

Re: Archives to be deleted...

i am guessing the majority of members do not dl the sets anymore. They are really old sets and all the new ones over the past 3 years are linked here now anyways.

what do u think of removing the post limit and give a 1 month period for everyone to dl what they want and then Kamal removes it.

Re: Archives to be deleted...

The entire site is about 220 GB, music stored archives would be nearly all of that. These are the stats for the year so far

Month Bandwidth Jan 2012 11.72 GB Feb 2012 10.34 GB Mar 2012 6.06 GB Apr 2012 10.86 GB May 2012 169.46 GB Jun 2012 27.73 GB Jul 2012 20.90 GB

I was going over the logs and noticed there were several google searches for the term "happy birthday didi"

You're popular.

Re: Archives to be deleted...

Sooo, really important decision and only 15 members bothered to vote. Sort of sad that condiments mean more to people on this site than one of the most important and comprehensive music sources available. You really don't know what you have got till it's gone :(

Btw I know I could have made a pun here, I chose not too.

Re: Archives to be deleted...

Whoa whoa whoa... Why not give us the option to help pay for it? I rarely use the archive, but I'd be happy to help pay to maintain it. Lord knows its given me plenty of joy over the years and I'd be willing to pay it forward some. What is the actual dollar cost of maintaining it?

Could we A) charge a membership to access it. B) do a fund raiser (most of use have donated in the past after all) C) Move the actual data to a file hosting site and set up new links?
