''It’s been a turbulent couple of weeks for DJs in the US. Last Monday, plenty of feathers were ruffled when house hero Mark Farina alleged he’d been kicked off the decks by a “table service crowd”. Then just a few days later, Calvin Harris declared that he’d got the boot for declining to spin hip-hop and, uh, tween sensation Carly Rae Jepsen. Of course, those are just two – perhaps isolated – incidents. But considering them in the grander scheme of the EDM explosion in the States over the past few months, you’ve got to wonder: what is America doing to dance music?'' Re: Is America killing dance music?

i wouldn't say that... there is far more people in america so there are bound to be a lot more varied tastes which some dj's just aint catering for but in saying that the people that book the dj's in the first place should know their shit about what to expect

Re: Is America killing dance music?

I would say that the US is killing dance music with the Top 40 MS shit. Everything from Pitbull to Rihanna is now horrible dance music.

Re: Is America killing dance music?

Yes, They definitely are killing the industry. but I think we're smart enough to not keep that shit. the problem is that there are many kids out there,

Re: Is America killing dance music?

Its a new generation out there no doubt. Can't stand top 40 bullshit here, and when they remix it, even worse. And yes, I agree, too many fucken kids combined with the fact that they don't know shit.

obligatory, "you shouldn't just people for the music they like" comment. there, now you don't have to post it whoever you are.

thebanned1, it probably does still apply because the same percentages of people would have similar tastes. And tastes tend to be learned by exposure and I doubt American kids are exposed to anything really different to ours. Anything being said here is being echoed in Australia spades

Re: Is America killing dance music?

I was @ EDC in Vegas this past weekend.. i would say EDM is alive and kicking in the US. I am a little worried about the fact that most people (specially the younger crowd) are all about afrojack/avicii.. and the rest of the more commercial DJs, but overall.. I was surprised at the amount of people that the event turns out. I thought people had a great time. Here are couple of pics

around 1 am

Saturday got cancelled @ around 1 am because of the wind.. I guess they were afraid the stages won't be able to take, but it was bs. Up until that point I was really enjoying dubfire's set, and Richie Hawtin was supposed to come on after him.

Re: Is America killing dance music?

Coxy was good, so was diggers, didnt we go through this EDM music fad back in mid to late 90's, it will fade in another 5 years. Being a geezer like myself who has kids who listen to EDM, one of them is into Pretty Lights, Dub Step, and such etc, the other likes Damian Lazarus, the KLF, and Sasha so the real heads will always keep EDM alive whether or not it is packaged with a bunch of filler entertainment for a distracted generation, otherwise the cash grab will continue.

Re: Is America killing dance music?

I go to see a band and I want to hear the stuff I know.

I go to see a DJ and I want to hear new stuff that blows my mind.

To me that is the difference between underground and commercial DJ's.

I don't think America (or the commercial scene that seems to be storming America) is killing the EDM scene, I just think of it as a completely different thing, it was Britpop, then grunge, then bands and now dance music, but there can be commercial dance music for the kids that will come and go alongside underground dance music. Just one is a fad while the other will always be with the people who love it.

The following quote was taken from the above link^^^^^
It seems like Europe is constantly ahead of the U.S. when it comes to electronic dance music. Why do you think that is?

I think it’s just a cultural thing. Is Europe ahead of America in all music? No. Take hip-hop. Hip-hop has been way ahead in America than anywhere else in the world, because it culturally made sense here. ... I was never a big hip-hop fan, I don’t understand exactly where it came from, but it was bred from an American situation. And electronic music has its origins, a long time ago, in Germany with Kraftwerk and Tangerine Dream. It has its ’90s origins in America. You know, Chicago, Detroit and New York. But Europe took the lead of electronic dance music, because there’s a culture there of going out late at night. Club culture has just been there for years and years, since the ’70s. America, it’s bar culture, concert culture. Go out till 2 a.m., go home. Pick up a girl, pick up a boy, whatever. People in Spain and Italy and Germany, they go out at midnight. Or they start partying at 3 or 4 a.m. and they want to hear music and just dance and freak out. So that’s why they’ve been ahead, it just made sense there. It’s made sense for a long, long, long time, and it’s just taken America a while to catch up. I think music in America, and this emanates across the world, everybody wants to be a superstar. Everybody wants to actually cut themselves off from people. Everybody wants to be on a pedestal. And one of the reasons why electronic music is so f*cking great, and why it’s seen 25 years of success, is that ... for the longest time the industry—the people in the industry, the people running the labels, the people running the booking agencies—they’re really down to earth. People were accessible. You go to a great club with a great DJ, traditionally the DJ is right there with the people. The best place for me to place is as close to the people as possible. So there wasn’t this big disconnect between fan and audience. It’s a little bit disappointing how that’s happened in America. It’s really like the whole rock star, hip-hop mentality. You know, these unreachable people. ... It’s not a rock concert where you just make a bunch of visuals and have a bunch of people onstage and project to the audience, doing your songs. Electronic music, and clubbing, is about an energy transfer. You send some frequencies and energy to the people, they send it back to you, and then you actually change and modify. That’s why a great DJ can play totally different every night. It’s not a setlist. It’s a feeling.
Regarding the title of this thread, parts of America get it, those are the areas that are more open-minded with youth primarily that want to go out and have fun enjoying House or whatever EDM genre for the sake of the music. These areas in America are few and far between. The rest of the America might have a few pockets of a few individuals that get it, but they are out-numbered by the "concert culture" described above. That's why raves and music festivals are such a big deal because they unify enough people who get it and for 1 - 3 nights people let go and enjoy the music for the sake of enjoying the music (in america). From the above article Hawtin says that in Europe this has been a common thing for a long time each and every weekend. Certain cities in America also have laws against having a true night life where people can go out at midnight - ?, it sounds to me like that doesn't exist in most of Europe?

So at the end of the day, the only cities that have any kind of real EDM culture for the sake of the music are located in California, New York and Vegas, and possibly although not probably a few other places (maybe).

And by the way that's why this message board is running, to unify the fringe living in the States in places without any real EDM culture with people all over the world along with those living in the few areas that have a real scene.

Just my thoughts on the matter.
