Do you buy albums or just leech?

I am just curious to the extent of leeching copyright music, and no, I'm not talking about livesets and the like, I'm more interested in albums. I know most people with broadband, even some on dialup (!), download copyright music from the internet. What I'm curious to know is, do you then move on to buy the album from a store or are you happy with your mp3?

I, personally, am happy to fork out the money to buy the CD, although I may check it out on the web first - think of it as try before you buy. There's just something about having a stack of cds that you know you have bought and not leeched, do you know what I mean?

I still enjoy a good liveset leech, though - cheers [ms] ;)

Yes, I don't believe in stealing what you can buy. I don't work for free, why should they.

#205985Post 3 of 57

I like to think it of it shareware, if you like it great go but the album, but if I don't, throw it away. Its not like a treat all my album buying like this but for the ones I'm not sure of I will. It's a great tool for that, if only more music company would use it as such, it would be great. I not saying they should allow to download music like a leech, but if would do more streaming I think find that we would buy more. :Bingo:

I think they should start including DVDs and other extras to entive people to buy the CDs. Especially with MP3s being a legitamte alternative now.

#206020Post 7 of 57

Always end up buying any album that I really want. Plus prefer the qulity of orginals. I download albums sometimes to sample them, or if i cant get my hands on the orginal.

#206022Post 8 of 57

#206037Post 9 of 57

im on the "if it doesnt suck and i enjoy listening to/spinning it, they deserve some cash"

i do howeer sometimes wish that i could give it straight to them

#206039Post 10 of 57

i usually download many tracks but there are some releases that i wanna have them original.it's like an investment for me..from downloading you get to know one track and purchase the original if you really like it..

#206041Post 11 of 57

i'm bying records for some hundred € a month. i think thats enough, isnt it?

#206044Post 12 of 57

it's all about the live sets!

#206060Post 13 of 57

I don't buy as many albums as I used to, I just don't have the money to spare any more. Instead I buy what I really reckon I'll enjoy and the live sets that I download mean that I'm never short of anything to listen to.

Rarely

With CD prices exceeding 20$ here, it is hard to buy a lots of them, but i'm looking into buying new Sasha's album....

#206063Post 15 of 57

yes i do. i leech first, then if the album is worthy of a purchase i will purchase the album. i recently purchased the new beastie boys album. love that stuff. and will most likely purchase involver, cuz its only 10$ at best buy and i absolutely <3 it. will probably purchase the WOW album upcoming as well. thats for sure going to be good any way you look at it. wee

I used to spend a lot on cd?s, but after the p2p invasion I spend much less.

I still buy the cd?s I like, such as the Global series and the cd?s from bedrock.

The next cd?s on my purchase list is sasha?s involver, which will hopefully be in stores here this week.

i only download livesets, albums (usually gu) i buy :Naughty:

#206092Post 18 of 57

I leech the album's that i'm interested in first, have a listen and if it''s very good i'll buy it. If it's mediocre or only ok then i'm not going to spend my cash on it, simple.

I have also been introduced to some new artists via p2p and bought albums I would never have thought of listening to otherwise.

#206098Post 19 of 57

I only download Livesets & from free I-Net labels (Thinner / Textone etc.). I don?t like the P2P DL at Soulseek and others. I personal like it to search in a shop for new music & to discover new artists.

#206105Post 20 of 57

I mostly download and listen livesets. I think that there are only a few albums that can compare to the quality (regarding music not the quality of sound) of livesets. Because I am a student and I don't have a steady income, I cannot afford to buy a lot of albums and in Slovenia (population only 2,000,000) the market is so small, that you usually don't even get all the stuff you would like to buy. Luckily I'm a part time journalist, and I recieve a couple of CDs to write reviews, so I own some of the originals, too.

#206107Post 21 of 57

A double mix cd here costs nearly $30.00, so i do like to sample first before i buy - there are some exceptions to this though, usually Dj's i respect or reviews i have read get bought. Once i have sampled a CD, if i dont like it i dont keep it.

I get Bedrock releases sent to me from mates in the UK (mainly because they rarely get released here, or if they do its like 6 months later).

#206117Post 22 of 57

Depends what it is really. Imports to the U.S. are too overpriced and I either wait until the price drops a couple of bucks or just download the mp3. Otherwise, I usually buy stuff, except for sets which you can't buy :)

#206120Post 23 of 57

I would if i could get them.. its fkn hopeless where i live.. all u see is gay ministry of sound, gatecrasher.. all that crap

#206143Post 24 of 57

If anything I've bought more CDs because I've run across bands/producers/acts that I otherwise would not have had a chance to hear or would not have lended an ear to.

Especially in the electronic scene...Its inundated with artists it's hard to know what is good and what is just heavily promoted...

#206149Post 25 of 57

98%* of what I want to listen to is never going to be available in any shop so 98%* of what I listen to is leeched but anything that is available for purchase I buy. (Not including all the vinyl I buy in that statistic).

*Statistics found in issue 234 of U.S. News and world report.

#206180Post 26 of 57

I only d/l live sets.

#206196Post 27 of 57

i dont download albums but i hate dishing out 17 bucks of a CD with only 3 or 4 good songs on it. I'd rather buy from the itunes music store!

#206251Post 28 of 57

:Bingo:

If it is an artist I know, I always take the leap of faith and buy. They need milk and cookies too!

#206254Post 29 of 57

livesets for me as well. havent bought an regular cd for a while now. before it was; buy, 2 songs at the most were good, album gathers dust, then sold to used cd store. now its dl, check, and then maybe buy. $20 for 1 song is silly.

#206256Post 30 of 57

i only d/l live sets and rare remixes of tracks before I go out and it. But I still go out buy the mixes that I like. Last thing I bought was the b-boys new cd, great cd. Will probably eventually buy sasha's new cd. Then that is about it. I might get pappa's new balance cd if I can find though.

#206258Post 31 of 57

I D/L to hear them first and If I like it I def. buy it.

#206261Post 32 of 57

#206266Post 33 of 57

before the RIAA started suing people here in the states for sharing commercial music on p2p's, i regularly purchased cd's i couldn't find online, ripped them to my hard drive, & shared them. sometimes when a cd was released i wouldn't wait to find it online. i purchased it, ripped it, & shared it.

nowadays, i only download & share livesets. i find that i have little use for commercial releases...

#206271Post 34 of 57

I definitely buy albums of my fav dj's just because they tend to have given my the best nights out. So I figure, why not put some money in the pocket. The only things I leach are live sets...if those were put into albums, I'll buy them too. :D

#206272Post 35 of 57

Even though I downloaded a promo copy Sasha' s Involver, I will still purchase it tomorrow...I always support these guys!

#206275Post 36 of 57

Live Sets from the net but otherwise I buy.. Just got Involver and Blue Album the weekend in fact...

Still like going into a music shop and seeing what I'll find...

#206284Post 37 of 57

It all depends on how much I want the album, and if I want to spend the 15+ for the extra sound quality. If I sorta like the album, I just d/l it. If it's one of my fav's and I listen to it over and over, I'd break down and buy it.

#206290Post 38 of 57

Like most have said, its about testing it out first. Thats what the internet is about IMO. I'm glad I downloaded the new Beastie Boys album before I bought it because I would never buy that trash. And I love the Beastie Boys, so if it hadn't come out on the internet first, so I could listen to it, I would have been very unhappy with the purchase. It was ok, but I may never even listen to it again, so I'm just glad I didn't buy it.

The other thing is just like I said with the latest B Boys, albums get released on the internet early. A lot of the times I will get albums months before they come out, especially in electronic music. So a lot of times, I just download it to hold me off, and if I still love it when it comes out, I buy it. There are exceptions though. I got that latest Crystal Method Album almost 4-5 months before it even came out in stores. So I was pretty sick of it before it even came out, but I did buy it any way even though I haven't really listened to it since I bought it.

Another example is the Velvet Rovolver album. Good stuff, but I'm not going to buy it. Sorry it just wasn't that good. I will, however, go see them live if/when they ever come to Denver. And I might buy a t-shirt too. IMO, thats how you get a good sense of the band any way, and thats where they make most of their money. Why pay $15-20 for a CD when its the RIAA and those stupid bastard bitches that are getting most of it.

only live mixes i download...albums i will buy
