Re: John Digweed - Live in Cordoba

OK I couldn't take the waiting much longer, broke down and grabbed a copy of CD 1... now agreeably, its no vortex but John Digweed is more than just the vortex!!!! I'm wondering why is it that we always want the same thing with every release. this my dear friends is no sleeper....just mighty fine.

I see it growing on me immensely, just like Structures Two did.

Re: John Digweed - Live in Cordoba
you don't like that?

Personally, i kinda don't like 'live' mixes that have no crowd mics set up. I think it really takes away from the rawness of the night and the mix.
i agree 100% on the live mixes... i like hearing the crowd getting amped up as long as it isn't overbearing and constant. it gives me chills as if i were feeling their excitement. if it was played live, i'd like to hear a little bit of 'live' interaction.

Re: John Digweed - Live in Cordoba

Good advice for Digweed - if he is to release another live mix he should think through carefully what gig to choose. And if a gig is chosen a full set release should be taken into consideration - to say the least. Cordoba is a forgettable mix and I'd be surprised if it was even aired on Transitions.

The 1st CD is amazing.. I played it minutes after I woke up in the morning, 5 mins in and I was WIDE awake and moving :)

He picked his most memorable recent gig & put out the intricate early part .. the music here will last the test of time.

Not many people play pumped up banging techno on their home hifi !

Next-to-last XOYO gig deserved Bedrock release much much more. If I buy some CDs with live gigs I expect some quality or even some landmark development stuff. This time I got another Transitions show with another begining of a live set by Digweed. What is worst no programming no ultimate flavor no galactic mixing skills heard this time.

I think many people would disagree - the Cordoba set, Moonpark Mix and T400 WHP set gives fans plenty of diverse listening of late. As for programming of the Cordoba mix, it shifts to different peaks and some of the tracks in between are absolutely fantastic, across a whole range of producers.

Out of interest, what are your top 5 Digweed sets/mixes just so we have an idea of what you would like on CD ?

#1614289Post 51 of 236

Re: John Digweed - Live in Cordoba

I think the mix is quite nice, though very different than the Digweed I'm used to hearing. Lots of quality tunes imo. I liked CD 1 best.

Yeah so for a change I'd like to see the industry break out of the 2-cd mindset. It IS a live set after all. The average set is 3 hours, even a 3-CD set might only be a snippet of the actual Cordoba set. But at least with 3 CDs the likelihood of hearing a fuller range of the night would be higher.

Most of those sets are 2000/2001 : John doesn't play that sound these days and a lot of the producers don't make those types of tracks (an example being Rowan Blades who is now part of Sirenize).

The Sunset Cruise is lower tempo that Cordoba ! The Zipango set has Psiko Garden, Pushin Too Hard and Amen on ... nowhere near the depth of the Cordoba tracks.

I'd have Cordoba down as similar to Beirut, which is a favourire of mine - I'd also say that the music there will sound great and undated in 3, 5, 10 years time.

Lost in the hangover & trip back lol.

Caught up on some sleep as the [ms] work took a fair bit of time. John played 2 hrs : but it was a real headline set, loads of new stuff incl a new Digweed/Muir number and this massive 2nd tune was played:

Some comments :

Excellent B2B from Tolfrey and Jozif. Really got the vibe and crowd buzzing. Could quite happily have listened to those 2 for the rest of the night. Digweed only played for 2 hours, but what an unbelievable 2 hours. [Presto]

Very good night last night. The tune from AMS was played still don't know what it is, only other tune I recognised was Joel Mull: Running on the Truesoul label which was played at the Timewarp festival also. [John 'Ahad' C]

What a finale!!! Last night was the best one of the season for me! Diggers absolutely rocked it! And that Trezzz tune sounded so good!Matt Tolfrey and Jozif back to back was great too.. how much fun were they having up there behind the decks?! Really got the crowd going well! Top night!!! [Sam the Prog Snake]

Re: John Digweed - Live in Cordoba

Well, I really enjoyed this. I like it. A little more housey and melodic in some parts and not that usual techy sound, I like when John dont play that sound too much. Anyway, a good compilation for me.
The Sunset Cruise is lower tempo that Cordoba ! What I'm saying for the third time the mix is ok, the tracks are ok but by no means did it deserve to be released for sale. It could be another 2hrs of accidantal music at Transitions show at its best. WMC 2010 couldn't possibly be called the Apollo 8 launch but it has a mesmerizing blend that fuses feeling of warmth, compassion and emotion at all times. Cordoba is a sheer hodgepodge of promiscous tracks that could be attributed to Fanculli or Masiello guys not Digweed...

#1614675Post 61 of 236

Re: John Digweed - Live in Cordoba

Plus marks for the phrase 'sheer hodgepodge of promiscous tracks' .. we'll have to agree to disgree. Having witnessed Fanciulli at WHP a few weeks back - the Cordoba is far more dynamic than the music NF plays.

The music here has the house and tech elements Diggers has been playing for years, plus Buttrich, Babicz, Eulberg, Turmstrasse, Pig & Dan etc. have been regular artists in his box .. and its great to see the likes of Rowan and Thermalbear (Sirenize) being picked up. The Paneoh track has sounded great at Bedrock nights and I love the Dixon versions of singing .. and that's just CD1 !

At a credit-crunch friendly £10.99 I hope there are similar future releases, and feel its great to see a label growing strong and putting out this music, with a range of packages incl. vinyl.

I'm sure you can e-bay your copy in a few months if it doesn't grow on you.

Re: John Digweed - Live in Cordoba

i've been listening to the album for the past few days and the only thing i can think of to describe the album is that its an absolute cock tease just like all the live mixes that he had released on Transitions .. its the equivalent of going to a peep show and running out of coins when you are about to get off and when u come back with more coins the last girl has finished her shift and u have to start all over again

probably the most memorable 3 sets of his that gets me off from start to finish would be Yellow Tokyo, Beirut and the one from Pawn Shop .. and i'm not saying that the tunes he plays these days are crap or i don't like the direction that he is going .. they are still ace tunes and he is still class with what he does but it is at which point of the set/night that's being released that irks me ... sometimes it just feels like he's dangling a carrot in front of all of us and laughing at us because we know there's more but he's not going to give it to us :(

#1615730Post 77 of 236

Re: John Digweed - Live in Cordoba

he will never release those special sets in the peak hours like at vagabond. which sort of sux. u have to go see him live.

like the one chap said most of the live sets are a bit of a cock tease, lol. but i get what he means, u are never going to be fulfilled. never a high quality recording. that 2010 beruit has great tracks but the audio is not real good.

thats what is kool about sasha ever so often he will release lengthy 320 kb sets w/o flinching.

#1615792Post 78 of 236

Re: John Digweed - Live in Cordoba

Plenty of love for disc 1 on this release, which is understandable, but not many comments about disc 2? Could this be cos it is a little bit underwhwhelming? After a few listens i find that the first 8 tracks are a bit of a dullathon, doesn't really kick off til Alljacks - Carlita. Suspect this might be a grower, like a lot of diggers mixes

On another note, i have recently been enjoying the 3hr circus set (thanks to sbando), the 3rd hour is phenomenal.

Re: John Digweed - Live in Cordoba

cordoba set is a big disappoint...

tbh if he would have released it for free on transitions i would have been unhappy with it, now charging people for it is a whole new level of disappointment....

seriously most people are willing to pay even more but give us quality and what we actually need and thats def not the first 2hrs, id like to see him release vagabond from 2010 or 11 and thats after 3hrs in and up...
