megaupload taken down?

Re: megaupload taken down ?

Pretty crazy this happened, but it looks like it was in the works for a long time, and honestly megaupload was primarily used for piracy, so this really isn't suprising. Plus their blatant disregard for takedown requests and also facilitating piracy based on the internal emails used in the complaint shows what happens when you do things like this.

Also SoundCloud for sure will be fine. Its primary use isn't to make money and host off the backs of known copyrighted works, so they are all good. The other file sharing sites like uploaded.to which are blocking US IP's right now are probably doing that because they know they are doing the same thing as megaupload and are used mainly for piracy. I think RapidShare went thru a lawsuit a while back and came out ok, I'm guessing because they are used for piracy a lot, but they actually don't knowingly profit off of it and respond to takedown requests as intended. I'm not sure if they have any us based servers or not.

We should be using S3 from Amazon to store all of our shit which will never go away or be deleted and is super fast, but the problem is it will cost some cash http://aws.amazon.com/s3/#pricing

#1584294Post 82 of 180

Re: megaupload taken down ?

Yeah, I use S3 for a bunch of stuff. It's cheap, but doing sets on it will be pricey. You can set and control access keys, so we could theoretically set up a small group for it and have people pitching in for the fees, but it would be a huge hassle to setup.

We should just post mix tapes around the world instead.

#1584296Post 83 of 180

Re: megaupload taken down ?

Yeah, uploading stuff to it is also a pain in the ass. It really isn't made for easy filesharing. Too bad because it is great for speed and uptime. I think just other filesharing sites are going to be the easiest to use for now unfortunately.

Re: megaupload taken down ?

I think this was discussed a lifetime ago on MS but is what the scene doing, sharing sets via filesharers, illegal? I thought in terms of copyright it was alright if a track was part of a set played live, just not if the track was used in a commercially released mix?

#1584407Post 94 of 180

Re: megaupload taken down ?

The "Scene" does not use filesharers, that's for sure :).

The copyright thing about sets makes my head hurt.

#1584408Post 95 of 180

Re: megaupload taken down ?

I bet SoundCloud is putting that there to cover themselves officially for idiots who upload the newest Adele CD in full vs. tracks in mixes which have always been in general ok. Now if anyone wants to start cracking down on any unlicensed tracks appearing in DJ mixes on SoundCloud they will have to start taking it down which also could be said the same for stuff linked to / hosted on MS which would suck for everyone.

Re: megaupload taken down ?

The sad true is that ALL dj sets and mixes out there (with no exeptions) are ILLEGAL...Only released mix-compilations should remain, because every single artist should be paid for the copyrights of the tracks and so on...

Here is my new account at mixcloud..i will upload there everything what is in ''my world'' of music haha...Mixes from Bulgaria over the years, from my NYC heroes and everything what is of my interest:

This is technically correct.

well then they should put them for sale for $1 then. If mixes were anymore I wouldn't buy it because I listen to way too many.

Plus I thought it was all about the music anyways

Technically yes. If they don't have a broadcast license or some other license for each track they play that covers broadcasting that is against the law technically. Note I don't know all the facts, but soma.fm was going thru a problem like this a year or so ago when some gov't bill somewhere wanted to change the broadcast terms to pay out per listener or by # of current clients streaming which would have broke them.

Re: megaupload taken down ?

I know why I always wanted to have the Digger/Cattaneo mixes on our own servers. Shame that so many megathreads are dead now, not to mention the Kiss100 MU uploads from Gatz. I wonder if any of the MU customers will get their money back. I am sure there were also some legit users on there lol. I have a Rapidshare account till December. I doubt I will be able to use it that long lol. I think Rapidshare is also pretty big and on their target list.

But I have to say that I was wondering anyways how all these file sharing sites can exist so long just because of the location of Servers and I am surprised it lasted a few years. I assume what will happen now is that people will go more in hiding mode again and it will become much much harder for companies to monitor this kind of illegal action. It is always the same...gotta ask yourself what is the better or less worse alternative.

Piracy always existed and always will for various reasons. So the question is how to handle it. Having an illegal scene which acts obvious and tracable while providing you options to partially control it or to have a scene that is so deeply underground that you can't control it at all. Take your pick, government and major companies.

Re: megaupload taken down ?

TechCrunch, which is turning into The Enquirer of tech reporting is talking about this Megabox stuff too: http://techcrunch.com/2012/01/24/was-megaupload-targeted-because-of-its-upcoming-megabox-digital-jukebox-service/

Lulz at Amazon being a partner. They wouldn't touch that shit with a 10 foot pole. They have already a digital music service and one of the most popular websites already in the world. No need for that plus the risk that comes with it.

Plus the FBI investigation was probably going on for year(s) so it isn't like an announcement a few months ago or whatnot just prompted this mass multi-country raid.

Re: megaupload taken down ?

How are Sendspace and Mediafire spared? I was surprised that my weekly non-music downloads on another forum hasn't been affected much by the takedown because they've always used other filesharers.

#1584778Post 120 of 180

Re: megaupload taken down ?

Mediafire sent an update earlier this week about their takedown policy. I'm sure Sendspace and mediafire could be also looked at. I bet MU got taken down because it was the biggest, making the most money and hosting the most pirated content, so they went after them.
