But Hernan plays minimal tracks, as does Sasha. If minimal means a beat and a bassline then everyone does, it's a dj tool. The difference is they don't play another after it, then another. .
this is my point exactly, minimal isn't just a trend of music it basically showed the vast majority of people just how minimal stuff has become in recent times, as for following up with a killer track i tend to disagree, not really feeling herman recently or sasha for that matter... i would go as far to say that i believe that sasha tend to be on of the ones i described earlier in this thread

no one is doing anything special these days thats what i,m trying to get at

Re: Your worst nightmare (Top100)

This is now kinda besides the theme of this topic, but a couple of months ago, I remember reading "our" Chloe Harris own twitter, saying that dark prog (for example, because a lot of people here, including me, were/are into that sound) hasn´t actually gone anywhere, it´s just being called techno, now. ;)

Maybe we've hit a kind of saturation point where new, imaginitive productions despite being original still remind us of something else? House music is pretty old now and doing something that doesn't sound like something that's already been done in some way is bound to get harder.

"pared down tracks that were being played by progressive DJs but I think they're only 'minimal' in the progressive context"

These "progressive djs" have been playing the same style now for 20 years so i don't believe there is such a thing as a "progressive context"

and yes, it is all techno

I think your pigeon holing of styles of music led you to miss the point i was making altogether

Not at all. I was responding to you guys talking about minimal this and minimal that.

Re: Your worst nightmare (Top100)
I think there's often a big difference between the music you buy to listen to at home and the music you listen/dance to when out.

When Jeff Mills plays his 909 and drops it down to just the kick drum, the crowd go bananas - you can't get any more minimal than that. You wouldn't sit at home and listen to just a kick drum for long though I don't think, you'd go bananas (in a different sense)

"minimal" has become a bit of a dirty word, translating to most people as boring. I wouldn't want to listen to tracks in that style onle all night, not my cup of tea at all.

But Hernan plays minimal tracks, as does Sasha. If minimal means a beat and a bassline then everyone does, it's a dj tool. The difference is they don't play another after it, then another. They follow it up with a killer track. It's one of the oldest tricks in the book.

You'll remember the killer track but not so much the one before it that created the tension.
Actually I mainly listen to dance music at home as well. :) But you are right it isn't the same. Guess it depends totally on how you define minimal. To me it is bleep bleep, sounds and boring repetitive. There are better ways to create a tension. Which reminds me I also hate long breakdowns. I don't want to stop dancing and just stand around , and do the hands in the air thing when they drop the track.

I actually think progressive is undergoing a new resurgence, I'm hearing melodies and vocals I never thought I'd hear again.
Totally this !!!!!!!! :D

Seems everyone defines minimal differently, which means varied opinions. :)

 Agreed.

It seems rather confusing comparing progressive to minimal I guess I can ask does it matter weather it falls under house or tech?

^^^^ Melodic techno is definitely becoming part of the new prog, but there is more to it. Progressive progresses :) But I wouldn't ever say that was dark prog, on the contrary the melodic techno adds a lighter note. imho of course :)

Actually I did have a nightmare last night, very involved as dreams tend to be, but it involved Hernan's gig,in a church hall, pews and all , my dog, I lost him, and a deep dark lake with this absolutely huge but very brightly coloured fish.

Re: Your worst nightmare (Top100)

obviously the polling system is retarded. it's pretty much the most unscientific poll ever conducted. ever. there's no rhyme or reason to create the poll or how it is tallied other than to make douchebags think that david guetta actually dj's. or that steve angello actually dj's. or that daft punk actually dj's. or that if you throw a few tracks together in a mix and let people download it for free b/c you've labelled it a 'dj radio show' that they're actually qualified to make judgments.

so again, the way they poll is downright re-re. and i don't know how anyone could take this even half seriously. even the people who salivate at the name "Armin" realize that david guetta is a goddamn joke.

I'm not here to say who is and who is not the 'best' dj. But I do know which ones really have that talent to move a dancefloor, to play to large and small clubs, and to pack them week in and week out. And I think most of you know who these dj's are, too.

Whoever said this is hurting the EDM scene is spot-the-fuck-on. When people like Digweed, Cox, Sasha, Cattaneo, Hawtin, and Zabiela drop off the top 100 (not to mention the dozens upon dozens of others who already have), they will be less and less likely to tour, less and less likely to attract enough attention to do club nights in venues far and wide. Marco Carola's views are, imho, wrong. It means more young producers will be more attracted to writing trance-in-your-pants tracks to make a quick buck on major trance labels. And that means fewer kids writing prog/house/(t)rance/techno music.

I'm actually kinda fucking surprised that Dj Pauly D did not show up in the Top100.

I'm not saying John Digweed needs to be #1. But when David dipshit Guetta takes the top spot....even ahead of Armin van Buuren (who is, in my estimate, a talented dj and producer) then you know there is an imbalance in the universe.

In a rare instance, i find myself in agreeance with Deadmaus. Even HE agrees he aint a dj, yet he's ranked in the top 10. Awkward. I'll actually give him a little more respect for pointing out the hypocrisy of it all.

I feel the worst for the dnb lovers and breakbeat fans. Atrocious. I'm wondering if they even have a scene anymore? I remember it being a fairly large scene years ago, but now look at it. As far as I can tell, it's relegated to basement parties and the occasional club.

I wonder if the editors at DJmag have realized how fucked things are lol

I've got more thoughts on this, but i'll post them later.

Oh,

and this isn't my worst nightmare, which is, by the way, when justin beiber fancies himself a laptop with a mixing program and starts writing pop music. it'll be the end, for sure. david guetta 'spreads house music' like cancer. yeah, it spreads, but it's also shit.

Re: Your worst nightmare (Top100)

But hasn't the progressive/minimal/tech whatever you want to label it, in majority remained pretty underground? Yeah maybe it boomed for a while at the turn of the millennium when Digweed and Sasha did some heavy touring e.g. Delta Heavy and some major promoting from Renaissance and the likes, but it was more of the club nights and the solid mix records being brought out that sustained through this era that was dominated by our respected heroes.

However in today's day and age you are classified big by turning up to festivals and putting on fireworks displays or collaborating with pop/rap stars to produce songs, which has an p-h-a-t beat.

I still think good music still exists; there are still some amazing djs/producers out there who may solely rely on club nights or a season residence, mix CD's and EP's to further promote their work, albeit on requiring work to hunt down tour dates or record release dates. Which is where the interwebs to the modern generation has helped so much; we don't need to go to record stores and sample records/CD's, we can expect how the vibe of a show can be through gaining tracklists and youtube videos days beforehand. Take soundcloud for example, I can literally spend days there checking out random people from around the world, some being bedroom DJ's and sample some pretty fn good tunes. I don't think we could have done that even 5 let alone 10 years ago.

No you're never going to get someone who mixes on vinyl's like a Jeff Mills, nor a craftsman on the mixer like a John Digweed, but I believe people are slightly over reacting to the concern that good music is dying, and everything being too commercial.

I remember someone posted up the RA 2001 top 100 and everyone was in love, but just look at the year after: 2002 RA top 100:

 1. Tiesto
 2. Sasha
 3. John Digweed
 4. Paul Van Dyk
 5. Armin Van Buuren
 6. Paul Oakenfold
 7. Judge Jules
 8. Carl Cox
 9. Ferry Corsten
 10. Lee Burridge

again, dominated by trance, as opposed to 2001:

 1. John Digweed
 2. Sasha
 3. Danny Tenaglia
 4. Paul Van Dyk
 5. Paul Oakenfold
 6. Tiesto
 7. Carl Cox
 8. Mauro Picotto
 9. Steve Lawler
 10. Deep Dish

Music will always be a personal affinity and will remain till the end of the times, but until then I may enjoy some modern day music as much as the classical day, in retrospect did you ever think Beethoven's 5th or Vivaldi's Four Seasons could have remained till this day as one of the most known pieces of work?

So if the majority of this day's generation loves David Guetta so be it, I don't care nor giving a single fuck that day. I still have my moments with some classical sets ranging from the late 90's and then switching to the modern day radio shows, and think yes things have changed but it's still sounding as good as it ever was. Makes me bop and that's all I ever ask for from EDM.

Re: Your worst nightmare (Top100)

I used to give a shit that Guetta, Aoki, Afrojack and all their chums were simply taking the piss out of the scene in order to make a quick buck. Now, I couldn't give a damn. Guetta can win all the DJ polls that he can manage. I still think his music is shit and he's a fake much like he probably thinks that the artists that I like are small time because they haven't collaborated with Rihanna or Kelly Rowland. It changes nothing, I will always think these guys lack credibility and will never buy their music. However they will still make millions will continue to hold the wow factor for a major amount of people. So what? It doesn't effect what I like remotely.
