Re: New Mix CD By Sasha

when Sasha was playing what you now call trance
How do you know what I call trance music? Im talking about the harmonics and melodies of trance music are what shapes a lot of what Sasha plays today. Were you at Ruby Skye a few weeks ago? If you weren't or you haven't heard the set then how can you comment?
Fuck me! are you for real? i can comment mate because i know what i'm talking about, tell me, how did you figure that Sasha's roots "are and always will be in trance"?

Re: New Mix CD By Sasha
I think you are confusing dynamics, breakdowns and an ear for an amazing melody with the term "trance" ... while Sasha (and Digweed)included music from the likes of Ferry Corsten and Paul Van Dyk several years ago, and got labelled with that tag - things have moved on significantly.

I'd hardly class Sasha as playing that sort of music - unless he has artistically sold his soul (highly unlikely). In fact "trance" has turned into the type of pounding repetitive predictive cheesy shite that the likes of Tiesto now play - I saw Sasha 6-times last year ... he'd have had to have made a major about-turn musically to have changed genres.
Re: New Mix CD By Sasha

I think a few of you are missing the point I am trying to make. In the 90's when Sasha was in his prime ( and whatever anyone thinks or says he IS past his prime unfortunately ), his sets consisted of a lot of trance music, and elements of this can still be heard in what he plays today. ELEMENTS of it. Im not saying that his sets nowadays contain a lot of trance records ( although what he played at Ruby Skye the other week was certainly verging on it ), but the influence is definitely there, and probably always will be. To call Sasha an innovative DJ is a bit far fetched too - I think because he is using the Ableton he is in danger of doing what he did a few years ago ie. starting to play exactly the same set week after week. Im hoping this doesn't happen, he is still my favourite DJ ( I know he isn't the best DJ in the world, but hes still my favourite ), but we'll have to see.......

"in the 90s" is a pretty wide timescale, and Sasha's sound evolved dramatically over this period, i recommend you listen to some of his sets from Shelly's or the Hac around 1989/90, you will discover where Sasha's roots were forged, you will also discover that "trance" as you know it, did not exist, and wouldn't until almost a decade later, way beyond (imo) Sasha's prime. You said Sasha being an innovative DJ is a bit far fetched, i strongly disagree, No other DJ has been copied and had so much influence on dance music in general as Sasha, look back to his legendary residency at Shelley's, it was because of Sasha's influence (and persuasion) that Geoff Oakes started a club called Renaissance with Sasha as resident, it was here that Sasha discovered a DJ called John Digweed. Also headlining at major events such as Universe & Chuff Chuff, Sasha was pretty much the first to do it all, how many other DJ's (apart form Carl Cox who has also stood the test of time) can you name who were headlining in 1990 and are still headlining in 2005? and what about the DJ's who owe their careers to Sasha? BT was virtually unknown until Sasha picked up on Embracing The Future & Deeper Sunshine, same goes for Kleinenberg with Sacred and My Lexicon, John Digweed was discovered by Sasha, as was Lee Burridge & where would Zabiela be without Sasha's hand? Sasha is nothing short of a legend, as for being past his prime, yes he probably is, but you were probably still at school then, but right now he is in the best form he has been for some time, still pushing the boundaries and setting the pace for others to follow, and he is still the worlds No 1.

Re: New Mix CD By Sasha

Thanks for the history lesson, but I knew all of that already.....

A few points....

you don't need to recommend me those sets from shelleys, its likely I've already heard them.

I didnt say all his roots were in trance, I stated that most of them were as a large portion of his career has been taken up playing it.

Sasha is past his prime unfortunately, although it pains me to say it, and at the height of his fame what genre of music was he playing?

I wouldn't call Sasha an innovative DJ any more ( for innovation check the Scratch Perverts or Richie Hawtin ( As if you would )), but as a producer he's still one of the best.

Yes Sasha is a legend.

If you were at Ruby Skye a few weeks ago then please, PLEASE, comment on what you heard?

I'm 31 years old.

You are one of the most close minded, pretentious people I'ver ever come across. Get your head out of the sand.

Re: New Mix CD By Sasha

Well I'll try - I guess it has a constant melody or hookline going through it, gradually dropping in with different layers ( sorry I'm not very good at describing it ). Come to think of it in some ways you could call a lot of acid house records trance...

Re: New Mix CD By Sasha
i thoroughly agree with nick sneddon

Sasha IS and ALWAYS will be trance.

i don't mean Trance as in the rubbish that is associated with the genre recently and like the stuff tiesto plays.

i mean Trance as in the original definition -- emotional, melodic and often uplifting music.

this is the definition of trance that people like me and nick grew up with......the shizzle that sasha generally plays.
You are right.

thanks.

see when i think of trance i think of epictiestoavbpvd type shit. and as far as i've known, sasha's never really played it... i am not going to say you are wrong, i don't think all that what genre is this, what subgenre of what genre of what style is this shite is much to go by anyway.

Re: New Mix CD By Sasha

Well yeah unfortunately trance nowadays has a pretty horrible stigma attached to it, but back in the late 90's it was great. Records like 1998 still sound awesome now......

Re: New Mix CD By Sasha

Everybody's getting mixed up on the word "trance". Trance is too general a term, one which in my book would cover just about anything with a 4/4 beat between 120 and 145 bpm. WHat we would probably call "good" trance is what Sasha has been playing for the past 10 years. This does not limit him to this, although it has been a component of his sound. Not to be confused with the Sam Goody definition of trance which is the Tiesto AVB etc. crap that everyone is referring to. Trance music just means, as far as I'm concerned, hypnotic beats in the 120-145bpm range that goes well with X.

...so if you knew all that already, why make such a retarded comment as "Sasha's roots are, and always will be in trance"?

Sasha being past his prime is a matter of opinion, in answer to your question though, At the height of his (is fame the right word?) whatever, i would say he was playing uplifting vocal/piano house, although as i said before i don't like genres and i don't like to pigeonhole things.

I still disagree strongly, Sasha is the most innovative DJ there is and has had more influence on dance music in general over the years than any one individual.

No i wasn't at "Ruby Skye" never heard of it, but i was at Fabric in Dec and he played nothing that sounded remotely trance-like, so unless he has suddenly had a major shift in direction, which i doubt, so.....

You are 31 years old? nice, i'm 34 :)

Thanks for your opinions of me, lets not get personal eh? but for the record, my head isn't in the sand, i just say it like i see it.

Re: New Mix CD By Sasha

I have said twice now - most of his roots are in trance, not all of them. I know he has influences from elsewhere too, including the piano led anthems that he used to play in the early nineties.

You're right, Sasha being past his prime is a matter of opinion, but I highly doubt he will ever be as big as he once was.

Sasha was innovative at some stage, but the people I've mentioned above put a lot more thought and ideas into their sets nowadays than he would. Yes he has had a massive influence on dance music, but you have to agree it took him a while to catch up with the digital age. How long did it take him to start playing CD's for example?

You weren't at Ruby Skye to see him play so Im afraid you can't really have an opinion on it. Sorry.

Personal? Calling someone a kid because you think they nothing on a certain subject is pretty personal and extremely pretentious.

It may seem that I'm just here to slag off the man like. I'm not. He's still my favourite DJ and no one has influenced me musically over time than he has.

Sounds good to me...though I'd rather he take the time to do some original productions.

Sasha plays and has played loads of different styles from the early piano house days, the epic prog/trance era, deep house movement and now the electro age...
