Re: new headphones

Damn I just got ear moulds done to make custom remoulds for my Westone UM2s but found out the quality and the tuning of the custom remoulds aren't great.

Re: new headphones

Really? All I hear about custom molds is how great they are.. I wan to try them someday, but still a bit pricey. 1964 ears have some good ones,, I am pretty happy with the isolation on the SM3v2 .. i use shure olive foam and it works quite well

Re: new headphones

Very nice indeed.. I almost got the Sennheiser IE8, but after days of research, the SM3v2 was a better fit for me. I am impressed with the isolation they provide, amazing.. it is just you, and your music..

Sennheiser are great btw.. I've had an older model for almost 5 years now, still working without any issues.

I think the sound issues and material quality has more to do with the ones made in China. I'm sure there's no problems if I sent my moulds to Westone.

I tried the Shure olives but stuck to a bi-flange tip for my UM2.

Now playing with the idea of getting new IEMs.

I got sennheiser hd 25 and ie 6. Once you got sennheiser is a almost imposible to get back

Funny story, I've never liked any Sennheiser gear.

had hd25's for over 12 years now and also bought hd650's buying a headphone amp for them but still considering a switch, ten years ago sennheisers were considered un matchable but in todays world there are so many that either match or are better for the same price

Re: new headphones

Sennheiser are good, but the IE8 seems to have some isolation problems, and that was one of the main reason for me not to buy them.. the sm3v2 have a very precise fit and the isolation is one of the best
try AKG, much better in my eyes ;) i have those for when i gotta be mobile, epic sound http://www.akg.com/personal/K 450,pcp_id,241,pid,142,_psmand,2.html:K 450
I had those, until someone sat on them and one of the speakers broke off... the sound is good, but no where near as good as a hi-end IEM..

here is the sm3v2 next to my old RE0.. the RE0 actually sound great, the only downside is that they need an amp to really shine, the sm3v2 doesn't

#1516913Post 15 of 48

Re: new headphones

Have you tried other IEMs before besides the REO?

#1516959Post 16 of 48

Re: new headphones

^yes (well after the Re0), Shure 535 and Um3x from Westone. The um3x were way too analytical for me, can't enjoy my music..i kept trying to analyze what I was hearing, they are very good tho. The shure.. something was lacking, I can't explain what, but the sm3v2 sound much better to my ears and my brain I guess. Before the RE0 I had shure e3c, the cable broke

#1516966Post 17 of 48

Re: new headphones

Hmm interesting, I'm surprised the UM3x is more analytical. Is the SM3 good for EDM? Have you heard the Westone 3? I heard they're quite fun IEMs, good with bass.

I'm thinking of getting the Westone 3, a friend suggested I check out the SM3 too but he's unsure as well.

#1517068Post 18 of 48

Re: new headphones

It took me a while to decide which ones to go with, specifically for that reason.. I listen mostly to EDM, but not all the time.. so I needed something that isn't good just for that. The SM3v2 seem to be pretty good across the sound range, which is what I was looking for.. I can go from 2Pac, to Dexter Gordon, to Nick's Balance 018, and then bring some Tool into the mix.. and they all sound amazing. But you should test them first.. they are not cheap, so you have to make sure. I've heard very good things about the Westone 3, but if you want bass the IE8 is the one it seems..but isolation with them isn't very good. The sm3v2 just came out btw .. they look and fit differently compared to the old sm3

Right now I am listening to Saiz's Balance 19 Cd1 and I am at "Lady in the Mirror" (track 8 i think)... the bass on the SM3V2 is a joy

^yes, great choice.. ! Those sony hybrid tips are one of the best on the market, I had them on my RE0, but for some reason they don't work for me, my ears like shure foam it seems.

Re: new headphones

Now that I've started this new 'hunt' I'm considering the Westone 3, UM3X or the 1964-T or 1964-Q

If you have the money,. 1964-Q is your best bet :)

#1518952Post 23 of 48

Re: new headphones

Funny you mention that, I've settled on the 1964-Q :D :D :D

My UM2 lasted me 6 years, I'm expecting similar mileage out of the 1964s so the quad driver upgrade will be worth it!

Re: new headphones

^nice! i would love to hear what you think once you get to listen to them for a while.. they should be better than you old UM2 :) I am very happy with the SM3v2 ..they are kind of addictive. I would recommend them to anyone who listens to EDM without thinking too much about it

Congrats man! Those must be amazing.. I was considering the tripe driver, but they were still out of my price range..

#1541176Post 29 of 48

Re: new headphones

I recommend skipping the triple and save up for the quad :D:twisted: Sounds amazing: Mids and highs more forward but balanced by the full bodied bass. Separation is really good, good sense of space.

#1752017Post 30 of 48

Re: new headphones

got some really good customized Grado's for home use now semi in the market for some good IEM's for transit/cubicle life.. 1964 is looking good. just do not think i can justify the 200% price point over standard Westones but they are tempting... very tempting.

quad drivers seem to produce too much bass for my liking so its either 6 drivers or 3.

Re: new headphones

I've read good things about the Sen Momentum earbuds lately - WIRED gave them a solid review and a I've seen similar praise elsewhere.

I bought these couple of weeks ago and returned them. I love bass more than anyone I know but these were just mind-numbingly over-powering.

I'm probably going to play it safe and pick these up in the near future

I had the silver ones for several years until the cable connector gave out. Then, I found the black editions online. Perfect (for me anyway) regarding sound response & comfort.
I bought the Technics dj1200, a couple a weeks ago, very comfortable and a really good quality sound.
I had a pair of these for the longest time - loved the bass on it, and the mid-ranges were really good too. When they started to get worn, I wore them to the gym most of the time (this was before noise cancelling tech was so ubiquitous with headphones like they are now) and rode them into the ground (the screws rusted and the padding started to flake and tear - sweat is apparently pretty bad for these - go figure).

I replaced them shortly after with the Panasonic RP-DH1250-S Technics Pro DJ Headphones, and they were my favorite pair for the longest time.

I would love to get another pair sometime down the line, but I'm not willing to spend about $200.00 here to buy one.

Re: new headphones

I'd love to get a pair of Bose like k posted. They are one of the best utility headphones I would imagine, unless other brands have caught up. They ain't cheap but I guess there are much more expensive ones too.

that is what i am thinking of getting.. the 1964 A6. i already have a pair of Shure 215SE's which are fine but i just want a better kick, clearer sound. was looking at Westones first (mayan_guy recommendation) but figured if you are going to lay down $400-500, might as well do double that and get the ideal, just dont lose them :) i think of them more as an investment than a goods purchase.
^^ Grado !!:D
agree! in my opinion, as far as over the ear headphones in the house, nothing beats the Grado sound (with an amp/dac of course).. nothing comes close.
