^^^ he used to play live gigs with the THM boys quite a bit back in the day....caught him a few times at the bank in st. pete Fla late 2005.

here is an unrealeased full 2 hour version of the mix he played live @ the bank when I very first met him in person. Really had a good time that night.

Re: It's your friends that make your world

We were working on that. I was coming out of semi-retirement from club and event promotions industry. We had just started a new monthly residency at Penscola's new ultra lounge called Suite that my friends own and where handle all their flyer printing and design. Our second month was supposed to next Thursday...it was called FSM presents I LOVE TECHNO with resident DJ's Steve James, Hafid Atzel, and Mark Lannigan (Hafid's roommate that plays intelligent DnB & was voted Pensacola #1 Favorite club DJ for 2 years) which we have postponed to 2009. I was working on getting him and Hafid down the Autumn music festival in Ft. Lauderdale for Nov. 22nd and other gigs in Texas. As well as a regional old skool warehouse party on NYE2008/2009 where he was closing out the main room which we are still doing. These days if a deejay could also produce or co-produce tracks and remixes, it would give a greater advantage of getting solid and consistent bookings and thats where our local celebrity progressive artist/studio owner - Kevin Rockwell came into play. He has the full $30K digital production studio. Hafid and Steve were to get there "feet wet" with him. Hafid recently did his first remix with Inner City's "Good Life" on his recent Mcast show. So many things were just getting into play, slowly but surely. I made a commitment to stay for at least a couple years in Pensacola to do this but the unfortunate happened. He wasn't here long enough to let it play out but in the short amount of time he was here he got the chance to play in front Pensacola's largest EDM event turnouts in years in August. He closed the night with Hafid opening and our friend Kevin doing a Live PA. The monthly EDM was averaging 300-400 per night each month for the last 2 years, his first gig after moving to Pensacola, they did 700+. FSM Pensacola was and still in the midst of releasing our clothing DJ apparel line - alternative unique old skool baseball and football jersey shirts (which are be ready next week), caps, beanies and embroidered aviator flight jackets. I had just filed for Florida corporation papers so that what we did was legitimate and professional. We will continue without our Florida Vortex, our Marathan Man, our JibJolly....but with high hope we will honor him on a constant basis when we do our events. I am hoping that DJ Eddie Garcia who was like Steve's recent apprentice continues in his style and selection. Steve recently and personally took him "under his wing" and I feel strongly that he will be looking over him through this challenging time.

Re: It's your friends that make your world

I'm sure Jibs knew he was feckin wicked (heck I told him a billion times each time we spoke). It was just the overwhelming majority of the negative things in his life that drowned out positive he believed in.

Re: It's your friends that make your world

as the days go by and from the many posts, emails, txts, phone calls, etc. I am most confident that the music and MS and anything related were his white light and/or escape of goodness, pleasure and passion. It pretty much shows on his DJ sets both recorded and live. His diligence and focus when he was spinning was not only inspiring but almost military -like but at the same time his carefree "jolly-ness" attitude was the contrasting part is what made Steve unique IMHO.

Terrible, terrible news. No doubt for all of you that make up the fabric of MS Jib's loss resonates deeply - stay strong, and continue to remember him for the passion that made him what he was to all of you. Both him and his family are in my thoughts...

Re: It's your friends that make your world

wow. i am so devastated. anything i write here cannot express my feelings right now, so i will just say this. steve was the first person to personally commmunicate with me after i joined [ms] a few years back. we talked a bit on soulseek too. he was a good person, warm-hearted, & had a true passion for music & [ms]. a great guy. we will all miss him so much. may he rest in peace, & may all his many friends find a way to deal with this. we will find a way. the way will be thinking of steve, forever.

I've known Steve online here for most of my 4+ years enjoying sound from MS. I didn't know him as well as many, but I knew him to be a great guy, and he will be missed for sure. My thoughts are with him, his family, and friends. R.I.P. buddy!!! :(

Re: It's your friends that make your world

I've already written up a bunch on this in another forum, so I won't make this long. All I can say is...I wish he was still here and I will miss him. He was one of my best music compatriots; I wouldn't be on MCast or probably [ms] if it wasn't for him. The guest mix that I did for his show will always have special meaning to me. He was also just an all-around good guy. From his posts on here to AIM chats at all hours, he won't ever be replaceable.

Re: It's your friends that make your world

Per conversation with his mother a couple days ago and yesterday, the only request by her was to donate as a whole to one charity/foundation/fund in his name, thats all. No monies are required (family, close relatives and a local friend in the funeral industry are taking care of this since no life insurance of any type existed), no fancy flower arrangements (she's a biker chick at heart and she felt that would go to waste). The hometown memorial service is more of a collective gathering to show your respect and make some in person formal peace, prayer, words, etc. with others from his hometown that loved him and in some way shared their lives with our beloved Steve. From what I gathered the family on either side (father and mother) are not religious or currently practicing some type worship denomination. Did I say that right? I apologize for my rambling and randomness, its been such a draining week both physically and mentally now. I need the Thanksgiving weekend to come sooner.

Thank you for everyone for taking to time to post. I know its difficult for everyone and we will mourn and grieve in a different way but the most common if not thee common bond was the MUSIC, so when the time comes we blast our airwaves, our speakers, our subwoofers, our headphones, our everything with his music that he so much shared, loved and cherished.

YOU WILL BE REMEMBERED. YOU WILL BE LOVED. YOU WILL BE HEARD. YOU WILL BE MISSED!

"Sunday Afternoon BBQ - MercuryServer ANNUAL Meet Up @ Cookie's House - September 2008 - Pensacola, Florida USA". After four years of knowing him, the ONLY picture of me and Steve EVER TAKEN. A JOLLY JOKING MOTHERFUCKER ALL THE TIME...Classic. That's why so many us loved him in the way we do. The fucker was non-stop at times and could give you an ab workout with all the laughter and humor he created. PRICELESS!

Re: It's your friends that make your world

I am not a regular poster here but I have been around for a couple of years. I never met Jib but it was shocking to read about his passing. Life is so precious and communicating everything we have locked up inside our crazy little brains is the only way to make it. Sometimes the best thing we can do is just listen to our friends, no matter how mundane their problems seem to us they are very real for our friends. So keep our solutions, advise, pearls of wisdom to ourselves and let them vent. Most of the time that is all we need, to be heard and hugged. Never underestimate the power of touch. Much love to all affected by this tragedy.

Re: It's your friends that make your world
Hello ALL,

At the age of 42 and being in the EDM community and nightclub industry off and on for 20+ years (they know me in local forums/circles as GRANDPA RAVE)...yesterday was one of the most difficult times in my life. I spent the whole day with of Steve's family (mother, mother's long-time boyfriend, and uncle). I did my best to explain to them on what an impact he has made on a worldwide level, local level and in my own life. I never left there side assisting them in every way possible in taking care of personal effects, the coroner/police paperwork, funeral home, etc. During this time, I had learned quite bit about his childhood and youth and had also gained their trust and respect in the short amount of time. For my own sake and the request of so many others, I was given the permission to see him before cremation. The details I will not post. They have entrusted me with everything to do with his music, equipment and such. His mother promised me that it would not go to waste, unused, ebay, pawnshop, etc. and I promised in return that it would be properly treated with respect and honor. Me and few others from Pensacola will be making the trip to his hometown of Port Charlotte, FL (1 hr. south of Tampa) for the family memorial service.

As soon as I get confirmation on his families funeral arrangements (time, place, address, etc), I will get that to everyone.

Sorry for the rambling...

PS - I am working getting "In memory" t-shirts done for our Pensacola Thanksgiving event. The first 50 have been donated by a friend of mine who had never met Steve but was a big fan of his sets that I burned for him on CD throughout the years. After that, I will do one time second printing making them available for pre-order purchase at a very reasonable rate.

I chose this route due the overwhelming number of emails, phone calls, texts since his family left yesterday evening and it its been mentally and emotionally draining for me to repeat myself. I'm gonna take a couple days away from everything to hopefully recharge for the upcoming tasks for the next couple weeks.
I love you Olive. Thanks for putting up with my shit all these years. The more I learn from you the more I learn about you. You are special to a lot of folks. Wish i could make the meet up today.

It is almost unreal. I mostly feel the pains of mother earth that could cause such a good soul to find no other way out. My pain. Is that I almost. Did not make it. I know what it feels like to be stuck in reflection.

Take a break from all that work up there. It wont be lifted for at least two more years. Man......come down new years. We could use some of that mountain love. I hope all is well. brad and alan...myself Z,crew perhaps PT. Mary and Dave might come maybe T. Take care man. i love you.

Re: It's your friends that make your world

It has been over a week now. I keep thinking it is gonna get a little easier but it is not. I keep expecting him to walk through the door. I keep hearing the accents that used to drive me crazy in my head. I want to see him walking around with his spoon in his drink. I want to see one more goofy face and I know I can't.

I wish he knew how much he was loved and how talented he was. He never had a clue.

I know he is in a better place and his soul is now at rest. But I miss him so much.

You will always have a place in my heart SJ.

We talked together so many times on msn since the beginning of mercuryserver, sharing the same passion for music, i just so sad that last year we doesn't have the chance to discuss a lot because i was not so much connected :| it's really really hard ..

Re: It's your friends that make your world

I just learned of this right before heading into the office today. I couldn't help but feel completely gut-wrenched the entire way (still feel that way).

I only hung out with Steve a handful of times during the WMC's over the past few years and though I didn't know him as well as some of the others on this board, I felt like he was family. At least for me, it's somewhat uncomfortable meeting new people but for those of you that never met Steve, he would have made you feel as if you knew each other for years. Hands down one of the friendliest people you would have met. I'm really sad to see he's gone. Usually people just say nice things when someone dies but I cannot underscore what a truly great human being he was.

It always seems that the best people are the ones taken from us. If this is God's criteria, I can see why Steve was chosen.

Rest in peace my friend, you will always have a place in our hearts.

For those in communication with his family, please send my condolences.

-Sunny

Re: It's your friends that make your world

Fuck , To Log into see this Bullshit is God Awful OMG . Mark and I missed a text from him asking if he could stay with us for awhile as he wasn't happy with his current situation:( . I feel like shit that I missed his text and a call right before all this unfolded . He wanted to stay at what he called the " Bunker " , and were actually really excited even though we barely fend for ourselves. Just wanted to be there for a true friend. I called his chic , she stated he was missing since Saturday and never called , I figured he went back to his mothers because maybe he felt he could work things out on his own as he always did. Now that I look back , He was waiting on Walgreens to give him transfer of job to find out he lost his job , he kept that from me , who Fucking knew - God Damn . With that last set he did , I was absolutely blown away , telling him it was my new favorite and maybe in all this a tribute of what he aspired to looking at him on the last stage , his dream fulfilled and knowing it would always play out in the lives of others . His love of people and music is something that will sing in all of our hearts forever. Sorry and Miss you Steve ..
