The iPhone 4G

http://gizmodo.com/5520164/this-is-apples-next-iphone
What's new

• Front-facing video chat camera • Improved regular back-camera (the lens is quite noticeably larger than the iPhone 3GS) • Camera flash • Micro-SIM instead of standard SIM (like the iPad) • Improved display. It's unclear if it's the 960x640 display thrown around before—it certainly looks like it, with the "Connect to iTunes" screen displaying much higher resolution than on a 3GS. • What looks to be a secondary mic for noise cancellation, at the top, next to the headphone jack • Split buttons for volume • Power, mute, and volume buttons are all metallic

What's changed

• The back is entirely flat, made of either glass (more likely) or ceramic or shiny plastic in order for the cell signal to poke through. Tapping on the back makes a more hollow and higher pitched sound compared to tapping on the glass on the front/screen, but that could just be the orientation of components inside making for a different sound • An aluminum border going completely around the outside • Slightly smaller screen than the 3GS (but seemingly higher resolution) • Everything is more squared off • 3 grams heavier • 16% Larger battery • Internals components are shrunken, miniaturized and reduced to make room for the larger battery
Yeah the story is awesome. I gotta say the new iphone looks slick but is missing the iphone-ness, looks like a sony ericsson to me.

^^^ and all the better for it :) IMO this is the most aesthetic and ergonomic Apple product I've seen. It actually looks functional, rather than the usual horrible roundness, and finally has most of the features of phones from 5 years ago  Still have zero interest in getting one.....

Apple's Lost iPhone: A Case of Puppet Master or Victim?

By now we all know Gray Powell, a software engineer at Apple, "lost" a prototype iPhone in a bar in Redwood City, California. Since then, the device ended up in the hands of Gizmodo, was reviewed, and eventually made its way back to Apple.

Many folks think this is bad news for the Cupertino-based company. Others might even go as far as saying Apple somehow screwed up.

Personally, I think Apple deserves a little more credit; with its long history of device leaks, it must know a thing or two about turning lemons into lemonade.

My colleague, Ed Oswald, said in a post, "...it is beyond comprehension to me that the company (Apple) would allow a lower-level employee to walk off One Infinite Loop with a prototype in hand on a personal jaunt."

Agreed.

Oswald cites Apple's notorious love of secrecy and goes as far as saying that covering Apple is "much like walking blindfolded into a maze." How does a company like the one Oswald describes end up in a situation like this?

I see three options. First and (hopefully) least likely, is that Apple's policies are lax, and the company has been lucky something like this hasn't happened before. Second, is that Powell was careless and took the prototype offsite without Apple's blessing (substantially more likely). Third is that Apple planted the device on the 27-year-old software engineer, and hoped for the ensuing media circus.

I'm not one to subscribe to conspiracy theories. In fact, I think most are plain silly. For the sake of argument let's consider Apple might have played a role.

Some of you might say organizing a leak of this magnitude would be a foolish for Apple because it gives competitors a chance to up their future hardware. PC World commentor technicalhitman said this regarding another story about the iPhone leak:

"... Apple intentionally leaked it's (sic) own device so that HTC, Samsung, Microsoft, RIM, Nokia, Motorola, Sony, & others could have a sneak peek well in advance? So that the competition's phones due for a September, October, & November could be sufficiently modified to outspec the iPhone HD?"

I think that is a valid point, with one caveat: try as they might, HTC, Samsung, RIM and the works will never be able to make an iPhone.

Apple has a lot of backing just for being Apple, everybody and their dog is already on iTunes, and the iPhone is and always has been the device to beat. Remember the long line of "iPhone killers"? By the way, all of-which have failed to dethrone Apple's device (although Android devices are catching up.)

At this point it doesn't matter if Apple was the puppet master or the victim. The company has a prototype device in the spotlight and it's got people wondering about what may or may not be coming this summer.

PC World commentor rcossebo said, "Personally, this (the leak) doesn't change a thing in my book! I'm still buying the Next Gen iPhone from Apple whether it looks like this or not. I'm sure the new bells and whistles on the iPhone are going to put the rest of the Smart Phone market to shame. As I read somewhere else, Apple doesn't just make the bar higher, then SET THE AGENDA! Apple has been that way for a LONG LONG time and I don't see their star fading anytime soon!"

I'm guessing other folks feel the same.

I'm not saying I'm convinced that Apple orchestrated the leak, I just wouldn't be surprised. What do you think?

people are talking about it. i say it's their marketing and its working. ^

i have the 3g and not the 3gs. way too expensive and for the diff. its not worth it. imo. the 4g is nicer and "mature" looking. but cha ching! might be worth it if you have data plan to go with it.

Re: It's here folks...

Wow. When it is switched on that thing looks ugly.

Good stuff for pushing pixel density though. I hope that display makers take note (I know Apple will claim all the credit but HTC and brethren have been pushing out pretty high densities for a few years) as computer monitors are pretty much stuck at "full HD" which looks sweet on a 15" laptop but I think they can do better on a 26" monitor....
How is it ugly(ier) compared to existing iPhone?
The outside is lush compared to the previous iphones -- the flat edges imo sit a lot better with a phone type device (except the white looks awful whatever you do with it). The OS is just garish though and ruins it. If you put something like the dark BlackBerry OS with the simplified icons on it then that would look awesome.

Not quite sure what you mean by this... haven't seen anything smoother than the apple os yet... its practically like butter :p

The outside does remind me of the older Sony Ericsson phones.. simple yet functional.

I'm still in awe of the ingenious brain that thought up the idea of using the stainless steel rim as an all-around antenna for Wifi/Bluetooth/Cellular connectivity. mad props.
