I'm still new to the smart phone scene, so I thought it would be interesting to see what apps everybody loves/uses. Here's what I've been playing with on my phone recently

ShopSavvy

 • Product bar code scanner, looks up the best price online for any bar code you scan

Shazam

 • Records/identifies the song that you're listening to

Flashlight

 • Turns your screen completely white and maximum brightness. It works pretty well

What The Doodle

 • Online Pictionary game. Pretty addicting

AndroidVNC

 • Control my PC via VNC

Re: Favorite Android/iPhone Apps?

shazam is awesome. never ceases to amaze me with some of the things i ask it to id and it picks em up.

papertoss = addictive.

taximagic - finds a cab closest to your location and calls them for you.

hopstop - awesome for cities like manhattan/chicago/boston where you do a lot of walking. gives you walking directions from mappoint to mappoint. you can also choose rail, subway, bike, bus, etc. it'll tell you for instance- south two blocks, take #7 train, etc. it's only for the major metropolitian cities tho.

yelp - foodie reviews for every city

scrabble - duh

pandora - must have.

Key Ring = reproduces the barcodes on those reward cards, gym cards, etc. that you attach to your key ring, so you just scan your phone instead. Very handy!

Re: Favorite Android/iPhone Apps?

For you android folks, I installed the ShapeWriter keyboard a few days ago, and I am really digging it. Rather than typing each key, you just drag your finger around the keyboard, and it uses word prediction to insert the correct word.

http://www.shapewriter.com/

Takes a bit of getting used to, but having used it for a few days, I find it much faster than regular typing. I gather it's available for iPhone as well, but I've not tried it on that platform just yet...

Re: Favorite Android/iPhone Apps?

Wow. Sounds like plenty of cool apps for me to check out if I ever get into the iPhone thing. Some of those sound really killer. Shazam ShopSavvy Flashlight Key Ring

Those sound very cool.
Google Skymap is pretty cool.
I just installed this and it's WAY cooler than "pretty cool" You just point your phone at the sky and it renders a map of all the planets/stars/constellations/nebulas/etc that you're looking at. I'm standing in my house walking in circles with my phone over my head wishing it weren't so cloudy outside

Re: Favorite Android/iPhone Apps?

For the iphone, the 2 games i always come back to are zombieville and minigore, well worth checking out.

Glad you like it! It was awesome in the summer time when it was warm out and I could actually stand being outside for longer than 15 mins intervals haha.

Re: Favorite Android/iPhone Apps?

Oh boy...

Blackra1n (essential IMO to jailbreak the iPhone/iTouch; you open up so much more to do on it and it only takes a few minutes - more time now with the new firmware, but still can be done OK)..or whichever piece supports your model.

That being said Cydia & Rock obviously to add to it once done.

MobileSubstrate (drop down menu to change and turn off key settings quicker) DJM800 lockscreen (something fun; slide the crossfader to unlock ) Categories/CategoriesSB (de-clutter your springboard by grouping things) AppCake/Installous - download and install apps AppSniper - keep track of what goes on sale or limited time freebies in the App Store Pocket Tunes - radio streamings on the go :) MiVTones - make video clip ringtones SwapTunes - sync with 2 iTunes libraries (namely off of friend's without deleting everything you have) Sleep Cycle - track your circadian sleep rhythms and be awakened at the "right" time Tweetie - so far, best Twitter App I've used UltSports - sports news aggregator MyWi - tether iPhone for Internet (bought it, business deduction) QuickOffice - upload, view, edit, download Office files/docs, etc. iFax - yep. fax from your iPhone. ScannerPro - take pictures of documents, save to PDF...then email, or use iFax to fax :D AppBackup - make a full listing and settings backup Backgrounder & Kirikae - force background app runs then switch between like Alt-Tab would. CardStar - program your grocery/gas cards, etc. ABGrouper - Group your contacts. iFile - file browse/directory to move, upload, download, copy, edit and delete files.

Some Games: Fare City - completely and utterly addictive. Enigmo/Enigmo 2 - awesome puzzle game. Super Monkey Ball 1 & 2 - classic Sega games. Paperboy - the original. Solitaire City - best one I found. Tiger Woods Golf - have to ;) Tap Tap Revenge - nuff said. Mafia Wars Pole Position Remix - another classic Tiki Golf 3D - best mini-golf style game I found so far. 10 PinShuffle - Bowling/Shuffleboard

I just found "PS3 Friends" on the Android store. It tells you which of your PS3 friends are online, and what they're playing. Good to know if it's worth signing on

Re: Favorite Android/iPhone Apps?

'Barcode scanner' is pretty cool/handy... lets you scan products UPC tag and brings up the product on the internet, gives you price, reviews, etc.

I have dozens on my phone, and I haven't paid for one yet. They do have apps that you have to pay for, but the overwhelming bulk of the apps identified in this thread -- if not all of them -- are free.

^^ I think google earth only works with the 2.1 rom and not the 1.5, dont quote me on it though.

Re: Favorite Android/iPhone Apps?

well that kinda sucks. can you upgrade your platform or are you stuck with the phone you get?

#1339291Post 29 of 163

Re: Favorite Android/iPhone Apps?

My personal favorites at the moment are:

Jamie Oliver 20 Min Meals - Great food in 20 minutes Air Sharing - Lets you transfer files between your iphone and computer when they are connected to the same wireless network. Sleep Cycle - Alarm Clock that wakes you up at the "right" moment.
well that kinda sucks. can you upgrade your platform or are you stuck with the phone you get?
Your service provider will send the upgrades out but apparently they aren't too quick on doing it. I have wiped my android phone and used a custom rom which apparently invalidates the warranty but i have read that other people in the uk have sent their phones back with customs roms and they have been repaired and the provider just put the stock rom back on there and didnt question it.

poults is right -- your provider should upgrade you eventually, but you can root your phone if you're getting impatient and use one of a number of custom roms that are out there. 2.1 update for my phone (Sprint HTC Hero) is supposed to come early 2Q, so I'm just trying to wait it out...

#1340036Post 32 of 163

Re: Favorite Android/iPhone Apps?

Waiting too....inmpatiently. I NEED one of the apps for work, but it requires 1.6 or better and HTC here is only 1.5. FFFF!!!!

JuiceDefender: http://lifehacker.com/5482663/juicedefender-saves-batteries-by-automating-android-data

It sets your data sync to happen every x minutes instead of real-time... who really needs their Google Calendar syncing every minute? The free version of this thing has extended my Android battery life by 1-2 days by changing it to sync every 15 minutes. I'm thinking about paying for the full version ($4), because it basically disables all data sync during sleep schedules to further maximize battery life

This looks awesome! Unfortunately, it isn't compatible with my 1.5 Hero. Can't wait for the 2.1 update...

Had it for a bit, but I found that I didn't really use it, and when I did, it didn't seem to work that well, although in fairness, who knows if that's a waze issue or a GPS issue. Cool concept, though, may give it another go at some point...

Don't get too used to it -- we're getting an update to Android OS 2.1 within the next couple of weeks, purportedly. April 9 is the rumor. Should be a significant upgrade, too:

better stability better facebook integration live wallpapers access to more apps more multitouch gestures

good stuff!

I'm running 2.1 and I don't like the Facebook app. I just use their mobile website instead
