Re: The Apple Tablet

The more I see it, the more I LOVE it, sure with a few more tweaks here and there, get something like iCall or GV mobile on there and I'd be all set.

I'm surprised that so many people are bashing it now and guess what, tons more people will pick it up. Its perfect, I love my itouch, (much prefer it over the iphone, hate BIG phones) just imagine a bigger version thats not a laptop.. can't go wrong really IMHO :)

Re: The Apple Tablet

I guess they have done the correct thing and have not said anywhere that this thing is a 'netbook', so since it can't multitask it is just a big version of an itouch + a new app to do what the kindle does. bleh.

True, you get some super apps on there and this thing will be rocking.

Re: The Apple Tablet
i think at this point apple didn't go all out with this is because they're not ready to give up on the macbook, which is a huge portion of their sales. if you could get a ipad well under 1k, that supported flash, multitasking, hdmi, etc etc...that basically merged the iphone and the macbook into one awesome machine...then the macbook becomes less relevant.

i also read about a lot of companies with new tablet style pcs on the horizon, and i'm sure jobs wanted to be the first out with his, whether it had 100% of the features it needed to have anyway. look how long it took iphone to get copy and paste. introduce the base model, people will buy it anyway because it's new, then slowly improve on it making each additional release worth buying for new features. seems to be apples m.o.

i won't buy one now, but i could see buying one of these in the future. at the moment it's not doing anything my iphone doesn't do.
apparently the backlit display type that the kindle is using (dont remember exactly what everyone calls it) is much better on the eyes for long term reading than normal laptop/netbook setups.

iPad - The uncomputer for the masses

http://danieltenner.com/posts/0015-ipad-an-apple-for-mom.html

I think this article nails it on how this is going to make money, and who it is geared for.

Re: The Apple Tablet

I guess my disappointment stems from the hardware and interface. Not sure what I was expecting but ... more/different multi-touch gestures I suppose, a front camera for video calls? A different way of typing, a sliding hardware keyboard maybe, dual screen like some non-Apple prototypes, something, that differentiates it as the Next Thing.

You have to admit, the way Jobs did his introduction with the first notebook, the iPod, and the iPhone, all revolutionary products in their category, when he whipped out the iPad, it's like, yeah right, it's a big iPhone.

Right now all I see are apps, which is software based, and those same apps could conceivably run on an iTouch or iPhone if you can sacrifice the bigger screen estate.

And seriously what's with the wide bezel? It's fugly.

More than likely that the iPad will make money from ebooks and whatever form of reading material, text books, and industries that currently use clipboards, eg. medicine. You can imagine hospitals furnishing doctors and staff with them, all patient reports displayed and dynamically updated on the fly as any new test results come in, architects with blueprints, trainers in the army or personal trainers, etc.

Re: The Apple Tablet

There are a lot of things that this thing isn't, but for the right user, it could totally be a boon. Would be awesome as a netbook if you don't need productivity apps, or for non-business travel. Don't really have a need for it right now, but depending upon what developers do with apps for it, I could see myself adding one to the fold at some point down the road.

I'd disagree with this, that would be like comparing a Hybrid and a sports car. Made for entirely different purposes with entirely different functionality. even the OS isn't the same so applications designed to run on either device are independent of each other.

This was an interesting round up from Molly Wood - http://cnettv.cnet.com/buzz-report-special-ipad-edition/9742-1_53-50082923.html

She covers well all of the things that aren't in the device - primarily, Flash Support. As Jobs said in his keynote speech "The best browsing experience ever"......not. Even usability perspective for eBooks isn't too hot. I don't know a lot of the eBook technology just yet but from the video, eInk conversion to color, even though possible, isn't available on the maxipad.

Unless a lot of the things are added / fixed with the tablet, Apple fans and people with $$ will likely make up the purchasing segment.

Re: The Apple Tablet
She covers well all of the things that aren't in the device - primarily, Flash Support. .
flash sucks, and as soon as companies stop supporting it, the better off we'll be. the best browsing experience = no flash.

i wasn't talking about the entire macbook line, just the entry level macbook. no tablet will ever (well at least not at this point) compete with what my macbookpro does, which is completely replace a desktop computer. but a ipad merging the features of an iphone with a macbook = damaging to the low end macbook. my wife has a macbook, and uses it for music, photos, web surfing, email and photoshop. when she bought it if the ipad could do all of that for less $$, with 3G, etc...you get the point.

Did you notice during the keynote, Jobs was surfing NYT or Time and there was an empty square on the page missing a plugin. That might've been a Flash video. You could hear the crowd snickering and Jobs avoided anything that might've looked like Flash video subsequently.

Instead of skirting the issue, he should have just come out and said, "Look guys, we believe Flash ruins the browsing experience because it just flat out fucking sucks, and it kills puppies, so we will not be supporting it from this day forward," and he probably would have gotten a standing ovation.

Re: The Apple Tablet

Like the red U2 iPod, Apple has partnered with Sir Paul McCartney and they are releasing the special iPad with Wings.

#1328929Post 61 of 127

Re: The Apple Tablet

TBH I think Flash is useless on mobile hardware that are mostly utilitarian and the usage is more information based than experiential. But it's still ridiculous for Jobs to snub something that's pretty much a web standard these days. What's he gonna snub next? AJAX? Because it doesn't run well on his hardware? It's a fine line to becoming a tech nazi.

Anyway isn't the deal with Apple and Flash is that Jobs reckons the Lite Player isn't good enough for the Flash experiences he want replicated on his mobile devices, and he's waiting for a player with better performance, rather than him having a vendetta against Flash?

Re: The Apple Tablet

i am a mac fanboy and i agree with everything feather and mr. jenks have said. this thing is useless... get an itouch people.

my macbook pro replaced my desktop... both my windows desktop and my imac... (windows desktop was given to my parents and the imac was sold to give way for my led tv)

i was really interested in getting one of these UNTIL i read about the no multifunctionality and that it is not a computer at all but an itouch. cant customize anything, cant drag windows, cant download stuff etc.. the more that its not like a computer, the more i didnt want to get it.

i have my macbook pro and thats all i need.

not to thread jack or anything... but i got the Samsung LED TV Series 8500 46'' (now discontinued due to patent rights). its a full array led back light rather than only the 4 corners like other LED tv's. amazing picture quality. now i just need a sub-500$ 3-piece audio setup... dont feel like going the full 5 or 7 speakers..

I have taken many a time to print out a book just so I could read it. Sometimes I get a book that is out of print but I can find a PDF of it. Then I can take and use all my freaking ink and print out the book. I hate having to use all that ink to print a book that should cost me about as much as what it cost to print it out myself. OK I'm rambling. We'll see how it does on V2 or V3.

All this negativity for something that none of you have had in your hands. Believe me, the iPad will be a game changer.

And, for those of you who like alternative technologies like the Zune or some crappy HP tablet, here's a story for you Kamal:

how would it be a game changer? Other than being an oversized iTouch, I can't see anything significant that it presently offers. Granted I haven't read up much into the current software it is providing but being a larger screen, I imagine even the battery-life will take a hit.

The one thing that I can see it really changing, and we won't know this until it ships and people start using it, is the way people read things like magazines, newspapers, and other disposable media. In addition to being less bulky, it's also more green, which is going to appeal to the target demographic for this device. I wouldn't dream of getting a newspaper subscription delivered to my home because I just don't feel like messing with all of that paper, but having each day's edition automatically uploaded to my iPad and accessible no matter where I go? That would be slick.
