Definitely curious about the UI, think I read somewhere else that we'd be surprised by how we interact with it.

Re: The Apple Tablet

I had a 2nd gen ipod when they still had the hd's in them and used it for about a year until the hard drive broke. I liked it alot, it still had the circular scroll wheel which was really nice because I could skip around long sets without much problem while driving and paying super close attention getting in a wreck.

I bought a 3g iphone the day it came out here and had it for a little over a year and sold it to my friend because it was too buggy and pissed me off. the phone would ring and the slide bar wouldnt work and i couldnt pick it up and the call would goto vm. it would reboot randomly and other bugs like that. mainly i could not get used to not having a physical keyboard to type on which drove me crazy. i came to realize i dont give a crap about games or movies or any of that on my phone, all i want to do is have a good battery life, a good keyboard to talk on and a good phone to use. plus i fukin hate itunes with a passion and since i use about 5 computers regularly at work and home i got very irritated with copying my music around to one pc to use my one copy of itunes to synch.

I bought the smallest macbook out about a year or so ago and used it for a while but really couldnt get into it too much. i bought it mainly b/c i am a unix administrator for my job and wanted to check out the underlying darwin kernel. but it was still kind of too pointy and clicky for me and i would just rather have a cheap netbook with a bare linux os running firefox and a large terminal to make me happy. my battery died a few months after i bought it, but got it replaced at the apple store w/o any problems.

im kind of over apple products and their prices.

Re: The Apple Tablet

I'm not necessarily going to rush out and buy one of these because it's hard to imagine that it would serve a need that I don't already have covered, but I'm very excited to see what this thing is all about, how the UI is set up, etc.

Re: The Apple Tablet

This is all the buzz... damn. When I have more flow soon, I will be getting and this, an ipone, (my old blackberry is a bit dated lol), and a Mac for djing purposes. I had Apple computers all throughout the Nineties, but gave up on them -- for preferential reasons -- but I'm glad to see the progress they have made since then... right on.

Re: The Apple Tablet

I was expecting more to be honest, maybe there was too much hype. This will be mega expensive when it hits our shores, am thinking close to a 1000 euro for a decent one with a 3G contract.

First, I need to mention that I do hate everything apple makes, i despise them. I think the release of this bigger, mutated version of the ipod touch suffers from the same greed infested strategy that the first iphone had. They included the minimum in order to sell it, once they've sold a shitload, they will release a better version with everything this version lacks... in about 2-3 years.

That being said, I found a nice little article:

8 Things That Suck About the iPad

A lot of people are psyched about the iPad. Not me! My god, am I underwhelmed by it. It has some absolutely backbreaking failures that will make buying one the last thing I would want to do. Updated

Big, Ugly Bezel Have you seen the bezel on this thing?! It's huge! I know you don't want to accidentally input a command when your thumb is holding it, but come on.

No Multitasking This is a backbreaker. If this is supposed to be a replacement for netbooks, how can it possibly not have multitasking? Are you saying I can't listen to Pandora while writing a document? I can't have my Twitter app open at the same time as my browser? I can't have AIM open at the same time as my email? Are you kidding me? This alone guarantees that I will not buy this product.

No Cameras No front facing camera is one thing. But no back facing camera either? Why the hell not? I can't imagine what the downside was for including at least one camera. Could this thing not handle video iChat?

Touch Keyboard So much for Apple revolutionizing tablet inputs; this is the same big, ugly touchscreen keyboard we've seen on other tablets, and unless you're lying on the couch with your knees propping it up, it'll be awkward to use.

No HDMI Out Want to watch those nice HD videos you downloaded from iTunes on your TV? Too damned bad! If you were truly loyal, you'd just buy an AppleTV already.

The Name iPad Get ready for Maxi pad jokes, and lots of 'em!

No Flash No Flash is annoying but not a dealbreaker on the iPhone and iPod Touch. On something that's supposed to be closer to a netbook or laptop? It will leave huge, gaping holes in websites. I hope you don't care about streaming video! God knows not many casual internet users do. Oh wait, nevermind, they all do.

Adapters, Adapters, Adapters So much for those smooth lines. If you want to plug anything into this, such as a digital camera, you need all sorts of ugly adapters. You need an adapter for USB for god's sake.

Update: Why stop at 8? Here are more things we are discovering that suck about the iPad.

It's Not Widescreen Widescreen movies look lousy on this thing thanks to its 4:3 screen, according to Blam, who checked out some of Star Trek on one. It's like owning a 4:3 TV all over again!

Doesn't Support T-Mobile 3G Sure, it's "unlocked." But it won't work on T-Mobile, and it uses microSIMs that literally no one else uses.

A Closed App Ecosystem The iPad only runs apps from the App Store. The same App Store that is notorious for banning apps for no real reason, such as Google Voice. Sure, netbooks might not have touchscreens, but you can install whatever software you'd like on them. Want to run a different browser on your iPad? Too bad!

As an alternative, and if you like Android instead of just an enlarged Ipod.... you might consider this. My wife will be getting one to read her journals on as she goes through about a ream of paper per day printing aritcles.

:lol::lol::lol:

I don't get it ... it's an elarged iPod with ugly proportions and a huge border. I'm watching the keynote now and he's just fiddling around with apps. Which I'm sure you can do on an iPhone.

I was expecting a more interesting user interface ... this is quite an anti-climax.

Re: The Apple Tablet

If the no mulitasking comment above is true, then that is ridiculous and not worth buying for that fact alone. i was annoyed enough with my iphone (before i sold it) that i had to stop streaming pandora to read a new email.

i thought this was fixed in the latest iphone sowftware update though?

Re: The Apple Tablet

Even thou I find the ipad pretty I don´t think I´ll get one because it dosen´t do anything else my netbook with hackintosh does. Maybe in a couple of years i´ll give it a try. When it´s time to change my netbook and they allow multitasking. The other stuff people complain about I personally can live with out.

#1328551Post 37 of 127

Re: The Apple Tablet

As has already been mentioned, this is a serious anti climax imo. Far too overhyped before the conference.

No this was not "fixed" because Apple has no intention of fixing it. At least, not yet. If they allowed multitasking then it would affect the performance of the applications due to hardware restrictions. Apple maintains a philosophy which says they want their devices to do a few things, and do them well. They don't want to do more in a half-assed way.

I completely agree that without multitasking, these devices lose a lot of convenience and overall functionality. But I do see where Apple is coming from on this. They don't want people running 4 programs at once, lagging the devices and complaining about how slow the hardware is. This would hurt the Apple image of high-end performance devices.

I have a Blackberry Storm right now which does allow multitasking. However, I must take care with watching my resources or else everything can get laggy. I've got a memory cleaner app which is pretty helpful... and an app which automatically restarts the system every night while I sleep. But these steps would make Apple cringe.

#1328575Post 39 of 127

Re: The Apple Tablet

you have the storm, which in itself is buggy. if you have the storm 1, its even buggier than the storm 2.

As for the maxIPAD, I'm with feather and res, this thing is a major letdown. for a company that introduced the world to the iphone, has, 5 odd years later, come out with an enlarged photo frame version of its best selling product, is pretty lousy.

in giving the benefit of the doubt, yes there is only so much they could better an already good thing, but the fucking buzz around it felt like it was going to give you a tiger woods experience right out of the jar. no thanks.

rather go with the iPhone. It's cheaper to buy, cheaper to rent from att, you can make calls with it and with their trade-up program, get the new improved version after 2 years. this thing won't be worth shit after 2 years.

#1328609Post 40 of 127

Re: The Apple Tablet

i think at this point apple didn't go all out with this is because they're not ready to give up on the macbook, which is a huge portion of their sales. if you could get a ipad well under 1k, that supported flash, multitasking, hdmi, etc etc...that basically merged the iphone and the macbook into one awesome machine...then the macbook becomes less relevant.

i also read about a lot of companies with new tablet style pcs on the horizon, and i'm sure jobs wanted to be the first out with his, whether it had 100% of the features it needed to have anyway. look how long it took iphone to get copy and paste. introduce the base model, people will buy it anyway because it's new, then slowly improve on it making each additional release worth buying for new features. seems to be apples m.o.

i won't buy one now, but i could see buying one of these in the future. at the moment it's not doing anything my iphone doesn't do.
