Xbox 360 fatality

So here's the story...

I have an Xbox 360 and the mofo died two weeks ago. My wife won this system last year so it was free. It came with tons of extra goodies and I was never interested in it but the kids bugged me about it since we have it. So I finally opened it in March, and the dvd-rom died this month. I call Micro$oft and they want $100 to fix it so I said no. I looked up online and am amazed at the amount of people that have had their system die on them. I have read many, many accounts of people who have bought several systems in mere months. Months. Depending on the type of malfunction, MS will repair it for free but that wasn't the case for me. I set out trying to repair it but since the motor doesn't work and the lens has locked up, I am SOL. I won't go into detail about how to repair it as it isn't legal and should not be posted here. I just wanted to see how many other people on here have horror stories about their system. I could easily order a free replacement with my Amex points but I do not want to plunk money into a system that I know is just going to die again. It really is that bad.

Re: Xbox 360 fatality

thos fking red rings got me too, mine also died. The story is something like this: I modded it so i no longer had a warranty and living in here isnt an advantage either so i just had to fix it myself. I left it at this place where they fix consoles and the guy just put some thermal paste on the cpu (that no longer existed), added a more powerful exhaust fan and so far all ive seen is the green ring. The early generations had some cooling issues and very low quality components. Im not giving one more cent to M$.

Re: Xbox 360 fatality

Yeah. I thought about getting another one for free but honestly I don't want to plunk anymore money into something with such a bad history. Most of the games I like are ported on PS3 as well.

Re: Xbox 360 fatality

I haven't had any problems with mine in the 2 years I have had it. However, my friend has had THREE die on him.

i still have a hard time accepting the following. 1. you actually have kids. 2. the doctors and social workers at the hosipital let you walk out with them 3. they are still alive under your supervision.

Re: Xbox 360 fatality

My Elite got the RROD jsut 2 months after purchase. MS replaced it for free, but it was a pain in the ass. This is my 2nd Xbox - and I decided to stand it vertically casue it looked better next to my TV. My older box was purchased the night they came out, has laid horizontally its entire life and has worked flawlessly. Needless to say, my new Elite has been laying down ever since... no problems yet!

There are many theories that MS only developed the vertical style to sell boxes and the system should never have been designed to run in such a way. Heat cannot dissipate nearly as well when it is stood as a tower...

#1029414Post 8 of 51

Re: Xbox 360 fatality

They extended the standard warranty to one year but if people got the RROD, they said it would be covered for three years. Bastards.

#1033061Post 9 of 51

Re: Xbox 360 fatality

I'm a total fanboy - but I believe MS should be held legally responsible for the overheating issues. They've all but admitted its a design flaw and the 3 year extension only helps those who are "lucky" enough to get the RROD. Bastards indeed!

#1033100Post 10 of 51

Re: Xbox 360 fatality

Yeah. I literally tried to get my unit to display the RROD but it only did it once and won't do it again. I'm not paying for a repair. Bastards.

Re: Xbox 360 fatality

Oh irony - just a few days after my post in this thread, my other 360 has decided to take a shit. Called Xbox yesterday and a coffin is on the way...

It's inevitable.

Re: Xbox 360 fatality

I might sound like a fanboy but actually all multiplatform games look better on 360 and don't require patches nor have bad framedrops examples:

-orange box (millions of patches required for ps3) no new maps support -horrendous framedrop problem, loading time on portal is 30 secs loading on 360 is 8 segs -COD4 required a patch at launch because people could never play it online -Madden 08 and FIFA 08: run at 30 fps on PS3 while 360 renders solid 60 fps -GTA IV the week prior to release the PS3 version was downright unplayable not even the single player campaing, users complained about a system crash that required a re-reinstall of the game -Guitar hero III runs in sub-HD resolution while 360 renders almost 720p -Gta IV on PS3 runs sub-HD while on Xbox360 runs at 720p -an average of 6gb Installations.. your kidding right? they promised blu-ray -slow loading times

...those are just examples list could go on

so thanx but I'll keep my m$ system, imo it is the best system out there, and I'm not gonna waste 600 only for MGS4 , plus psn doesn't even compare to xboxlive in terms of online functions and fun factor.

Red ring of death is a problem that happened to launch consoles if you get the new ones you should probably get a pretty reliable console...sucks to be you tho with a faulty DVD drive.

Re: Xbox 360 fatality

Id stick to pc games if upgrading the computer was so expensive and hard to get good parts here in south america.

A little bit of research shows that 360 fatality rates have risen to about 1 in 3 now. That's totally unacceptable IMO. If we were dealing with any other piece of equipment, there would be a definite class action lawsuit.

I'm a total fanboy - but that doesn't mean I'm not pissed. BOTH of my 360 have failed now. My Elite died just 1 month after purchase, and my original box - purchased about 18 months ago - has now died as well.

btw - you forgot to mention the EXCLUSIVE 360 DLC that will be available for GTAIV this fall! muhahahahaha! By the time Sony gets its shit together - the next Xbox will be out!

It's easy to port from PC to sub-level, PC-based Xbox360 because the hardware was already outdated before it came out. By the way, 720P is sub-HD. ;)

in that case it still sounds ridiculous to me that out of 100 developers only Kojima Productions "knows how to program properly for PS3". Don't get me wrong I was always a Playstation fan I had the PSX and PS2 the metal gear solid series etc. but they lost my respect a few years back the PSP was "teh fail" etc... I might get a PS3 in 2 years.

Re: Xbox 360 fatality

Yeah. I can get a free PSP but every time I do a list in my head of "pros" and "cons", I still can't figure out why I'd really want one.

Re: Xbox 360 fatality

a PSP is pretty nifty to have to u commute daily on public transport ... or if u are a kid sitting at the back of the car

Re: Xbox 360 fatality

^ PSP's are indeed handy - I play it on my lunch break when weather is crap and I can't leave the office. Plus when I fly anywhere.

On the subject of Box 360's, 3 of my friends have had the RROD, one after the other. Each time they were within warranty so got it repaired free, but I'm just dreading my turn, which sounds inevitable

Re: Xbox 360 fatality

I got the red ring of death like 4 months ago. I just got around to contacting microsoft 2 weeks ago, sent it in and got my unit back in 5 days. Pretty painless. It's fucking ridiculous that now they make gaming consoles that suck as bad as their operating systems. What a shit company.

So my choices are between Sony and Microsoft for gaming? The two worst companies on earth. Pass....

#1042906Post 23 of 51

Re: Xbox 360 fatality

I've had mine for 2 years with less than average use, knock on wood only time I saw the red ring was because the connector in the back was loose.

as for the theory about standing it vertical or laying it horizontal, I've noticed that keeping it vertical produces less fan noise (I imagine with the vents exposed on both sides of the box vs. only one when it's laying down produces lesser heat). other than that, I imagine using this thing as a media center extender more often than not.

Re: Xbox 360 fatality

I've opened up two of these things and the design of the innards is amazingly horrible. The newest revision (Falcon, I believe) has moved everything around so they say the failure rate has dropped. I would recommend that anyone that even thinks about getting a refurb to check the date on the back and ensure that it was produced within the past few months. Good luck with that though.

As for Sony vs. MS, I feel ya. The playstation line is the only line from Sony that I spend money on. I stay away from most everything else they produce. Seen too many bad things happen to trust a company. But then... I drive a Ford that has 0 issues. :p

so what shit together? their 2.4 firmware update is a complete disapointment and it bricked my neighboors PS3 by the way. Sony is a fail nowadays.

What about the latest Gran Tourismo ? Moreover, considering the age of the PS3 vs. the XBOX 360 (which means you can easily expect more PS3 game releases to eventually overshadow what the 360 may have against it) and the fact that it comes with a HiDef DVD player by default (which the XBOX is still figuring out what to do after they got shafted with the failing of HD-DVD), I do believe the PS3 has become a wicked purchase.

Really accurate using one of the most basic cars on gran turismo for that comparison.

Re: Xbox 360 fatality

Well what a bloody surprise - just one month after writing in this topic, my X Box 360 is dying on me. It keeps freezing up 2-3 minutes into a game or DVD. According to the web, this is a pre-requisite for the RROD. I'm gutted.

According to Microsoft website, I'm out of warranty. What are my options guys? Give it to a computer repair shop? Or is that just risking even more damage?

#1057522Post 32 of 51

Re: Xbox 360 fatality

If you get the RROD, then your warranty coverage is three years. All other instances are one year. Hope for the worst, honestly.

go to costco, buy a new one and then box up your old one and return it. they never check the serial numbers.
go to costco, buy a new one and then box up your old one and return it. they never check the serial numbers.
That's been a pretty well used solution for many people out there. The system is very easy to open and the serial number stickers come off with no problems. Damn sneaky people are doing this all over and end up selling broken ones to others.

#1058255Post 37 of 51

Re: Xbox 360 fatality

it would be hilarious if someone with the intention of doing that finding that his new xbox is actually a used xbox that had broke

#1058398Post 38 of 51

Re: Xbox 360 fatality

That would only happen if he/she got it from someone versus getting it at the store. That would be pretty funny though.

got it fixed yet?

hated playing it..dont like the controller

Re: Xbox 360 fatality

costco actually sends all the things they get back especially xbox360 so they dont sell it again, they just get new ones in.
