Well, my HP dv6000 effectively died today. Screen had been flickering for a day, and then the inverter went out (my guess) and the whole goddamn screen is now dark as hell. Not even 1.5 years. I guess this is what I get for buying a piece of shit HP... god damn those fuckers, they can choke on a cock and go to hell

Honestly, I don't want a bunch of fancy features as much as I just want a laptop that can physically last more than two fucking years. This one made it to 1.5 and the Dell before that (oh god...another organization that can just fuck off and die) about the same before the CD-rom died.

So...which option would you pick?

 1. Invest the $30 and the time in learning to replace the inverter myself - assuming that is even the real problem.
 2. Calll HP so that I can enjoy hearing them tell me that they will fuck me hard - i.e., replace the whole screen for like $600 and a month of waiting around.
 3. Call it a loss and try to get something that actually fucking works for a change. Any comments or experiences with macbooks?
 4. Not learn my lesson and drop 1.5-1.7k on something like a Sony or a Lenovo, which will probably just end up being the exact same steaming pile of shit.

I guess I don't have that much of a point with this other than to vent. So, in conclusion let me just say...

Fuck those inbred pricks at HP. They can die.

Fuck those bastard cunts at Dell. I hope they all get raped by goats.

Fuck all PCs for that matter. I'm sick of all these manufacturers who continuously excrete a putrid stream of models with retarded names like the "DFZ 4855t" when it is all just the same cheap, ass-ugly, poorly performing SHIT slapped together somewhere in China.

Thank you.

Go forth and bite the apple. It's easy to switch over. That said, Apple's QC these days are shite too, so I dunno if you will have the same durability issue.

I did, and I feel better already :D

yeah it's just one of these things where really anything I pick is probably statistically just as likely to turn into crap... I guess I just have to get used to shelling out one and a half grand or so every two years on these boxes, since I can't live without them anymore. I'm sure the manufacturers like it this way.

Re: fucking PC laptops...macbooks, here I come

yea get a mac for sure.

if ur getting an imac, good luck cause they just updated them this week.

if ur getting a laptop... get a macbook pro, these were updated earlier this year.

if u want a regular macbook, rumor has it that they are releasing new ones in june... they are supposed to look like the macbook pro that is out now, so u might as well wait for that.

i've had pretty much the same experience with my Mac. Although I just use it for music and a bit of internet. I use my toshiba for all my internet needs and almost nothing else.

i do think the only thing I had to learn over was the key commands for a mac. But there are so many sites that will teach you those.

dude, get a mac. I picked up a MacBook in November, and I rarely, rarely use either of the other PCs anymore -- and when I do, I'm bummed out about it.

It's not a fair comparison. Mac is to PC what Mercedes is to Kia. Not a close call.

Re: fucking PC laptops...macbooks, here I come

I'm now debating a refurbished Macbook Pro from Apple. It has pretty good specs, just a slightly worse hard drive than I might consider on my own - 160gb at 5400 rpm vs. like a 200gb at 7200 rpm.

Question to music makers out there: would you consider a 5400 rpm to be a serious impediment to working effectively with programs like Ableton on a laptop?

I know already that I'm generally behind desktops straight off the bat in terms of latency anyways, and so I'm concerned about the effect when you start talking about programs that rely on a lot of access to samples on your hard drive, etc. On the other hand, I have heard Macbooks tend to run hot and I expect this will exacerbate that as well as decrease the battery life...

But I expect that I would really end up linking in an external hard drive into the setup if I got serious with the samples and tracks.

Another thing to keep in mind is this -- hard drives are cheap, cheap, cheap right now. I use my internal drive for things that have to be on the drive, use a bus-powered WD Passport that's about the size of an iPod & travels well for my music and movies, and use a regular big-ass hard drive for stuff I'd like to keep but that I'm unlikely to need away from my desk. Works like a champ, and I've never noticed any sort of lag for items coming off the drive at all. Of course, I'm not using programs like Ableton, so I can't speak to that, but that's how I addressed the less-than-ideal HD issue.

I switched in 2005.

I work for Sony, and the laptops we buy are SHIT!

#1012223Post 27 of 77

Re: fucking PC laptops...macbooks, here I come

Not a music maker, but I don't see why you can't play with music on a 5400 or even an external hdd. For external, USB 2.0 transfer rate is up to 480mbps, Scsi A is 400mbps, Scsi B (on the latest macbook pro) is 800 mbps ... that's more than enough bandwidth for some music samples and mp3s.

I am assuming Ableton or the software will have some sort of cache for them to have music/samples ready to fuck around with them on the fly ... So all the stuff you're doing live like applying efx or anything over the tracks and samples, are more cpu intensive than I/O.

Thanks guys for the comments on the hard drives - very helpful
pocket sized firewire 800 HD for traktor scratch....

Not right now, but I plan to get into it in the not to distant future...

So the like the 4 good mac refurbs. I was eyeing were all taken within the last 10 minutes - not surprising, I guess. I'm still sitting around convincing myself that the insane price premium is really a good idea for me. I guess PC-wise the only thing I'd really consider would be a Lenovo T61, but I've read about the wireless issues they're having with those (although I would never run it on Vista).

One more question: the legendary heat issue...what has been your experience with your macsbooks? Has it been bad enough to inconvenience you, or is this something they fixed after the first generation?

Mine gets warm, but not so much so that it's ever been an issue. I don't know what it was like before so I can't compare it to earlier reports, but it hasn't been a big deal as far as I'm concerned.

Re: fucking PC laptops...macbooks, here I come

Your decision really depends on what do you generally use your computer for? Or possibly, your location, too; as we all know that USA people like their product, so they buy Mac. Do you want to look great with Mac style, or have a nasty Lenovo machine which you dont want to show in public?

I was always more for the ugly computer with something in it, than some fancy computer with something in it, and I am still convinced that if you put same amount of cash in a PC, it has to work at least like an Mac. HPs have some issues right now, but i think there are new models on horizon which could improve overall notebook lifetime, so currently if you ask me, i would go for a Lenovo, if nothing else, just to try it out. hehe

cheers

oh, maybe this could help your decision somewhat: http://blogs.zdnet.com/storage/?p=320&tag=nl.e622

The great thing about modern Macs, though, is that you no longer have to sacrifice power (at least in terms of specs) for style. In the past, PCs always outpaced Macs in terms of raw power, but Macs made up for it by having an OS that ran so well. Nowadays, with Macs running on Intel architecture, you don't have to make that trade off.

#1012654Post 35 of 77

Re: fucking PC laptops...macbooks, here I come

after my last post, I checked to see just how close they are now in terms of power, and I actually found a very recent Popular Mechanics article (May 2008 issue) that attempts to do an apples to apples comparison of PCs and Macs. You might want to check it out:

http://www.popularmechanics.com/technology/reviews/4258725.html

Here's the upshot:
The Verdict: Apple Mac: In both the laptop and desktop showdowns, Apple’s computers were the winners. Oddly, the big difference didn’t come in our user ratings, where we expected the famously friendly Mac interface to shine. Our respondents liked the look and feel of both operating systems but had a slight preference toward OS X. In our speed trials, however, Leopard OS trounced Vista in all-important tasks such as boot-up, shutdown and program-launch times. We even tested Vista on the Macs using Apple’s platform-switching Boot Camp software—and found that both Apple computers ran Vista faster than our PCs did.

PC: Simply put, Vista proved to be a more sluggish operating system than Leopard. Our PCs installed some software faster, but in general they were slower in our time trials. Plus, both PCs showed weaker performance on third-party benchmarks than the Macs. Our biggest surprise, however, was that PCs were not the relative bargains we expected them to be. The Asus M51sr costs the same as a MacBook, while the Gateway One actually costs $300 more than an iMac. That means for the price of the Gateway you could buy an iMac, boost its hard drive to match the Gateway’s, purchase a copy of Vista to boot—and still save $100.
#1012734Post 36 of 77

Re: fucking PC laptops...macbooks, here I come

yeah, i understand that, but Miroslav specified that he would never run Vista on the comp., so the question is again, how do the PCs with WinXP compare to Mac with OS X?

Its interesting that Macs beat PCs on their native OS, but i suppose thats primarily because of Vista, which is still an bottomless pit for resources. BTW: Is it possible that PC makers dont completly test and optimize their configurations like Apple does? I always supposed that Macs are so expensive because of the specific installed hardware. Now with Intel chips, everything else is constructed on the same base. And of course, i must not forget to mention that in USA you can get Mac for at least 30% less than, for example, in Europe.

ahahaha, i just saw the numbers of test, Gateway is utterly humiliated. why do they even bother with producing that piece. Asus notebook isnt so bad except the battery duration. Yeah, with those tests in mind, Mac would definitely be a better choice.

a Mac has an intel processor in it.. so its basically as good as any PC with similar specs... i would assume.

of course, Apple spends tons of time getting the components of their computers to work in sync with each other... while PC's put different things together and then u gotta worry about having the right drivers and shit for everything to work well.

the only difference being battery life, power usage, and look and feel.

#1012794Post 38 of 77

Re: fucking PC laptops...macbooks, here I come

I dont deny the argument at all that Macs are proving to be much better + reliable (albeit $$) compared to vista machines but as most have mentioned in this thread, it boils down to what you will use it for.

for my media center PC connected to my TV, I couldn't live with AppleTV or similar Mac based program simply because Vista's Media Center clearly has way more clientèle and some of these are even creating applications for it, which others can download and use. Their Media Center simply doesn't complete.

Even for my work related computer, I would much rather use a PC/Laptop simply because I am a software fiend and the tons of freeware available for Windows is way more beneficial for me than any software Mac can has to offer.

If I had the extra cash and just to surf the web, check email, write music, be a graphic designer, edit videos..... Macs are clearly ahead in the game
