Kamal does have a valid point. I too once was a Microsoft user. Growing up on these machines just made things second nature. Bios, Configs, upgrades, etc. I also invested countless hours to get mobo, cpu and memory to work. O gawd the suffering.
The move to Apple was really for piece of mind. I have learned in my mac conversion that there are actually a lot third party freeware. It is not as expansive as per say the PC world, but it is there. The nice thing is if I ever never ever need anything for Microsoft, I have the option to boot externally to Vista/XP. Dun Dun da.

ive been on PC's my whole life.
got a macbook in july of last year and love it.
just ordered a new imac yesterday to make the full switch over to mac. CANNOT WAIT!
Re: fucking PC laptops...macbooks, here I come
I bought a macbook pro about 2 months ago when my dell laptop bit the dust.
I had absolutely no compatibility troubles when switching my files from windows to mac. I couldn't imagine ever going back to windows. imo mac should really be the standard. It's truly better than windows in so many ways!
Finally got around to getting office mac for my laptop a week or two ago so I have no trouble using my mac for any school or work related content either!
Re: fucking PC laptops...macbooks, here I come
Yeah there's actually a surprising wealth of software out there for the Mac, and the bulk of which are open source, or cheap shareware. The upside is they're all pretty well designed because Mac developers are more often than not, Mac users, and are used to the intuitive usability of the Mac OS.
Mac users always harp about the OS' usability and it's not something anyone can understand until they've used a Mac for at least a month. If you're playing with it in the shop, all you do is point and click with the mouse. But when you actually use it every day and especially for the geeks who love keyboard shortcuts, the Mac is completely intuitive once your fingers remember the key strokes. Stuff like Apple + Space for Spotlight, Ctrl + Space for Quicksilver, Ctrl + Arrow for Spaces, screen hotspots for Expose and Dashboard, shortcuts for screen captures, etc. Say I want to add a picture from a website as album art to my mp3 in iTunes. I click and drag the picture, move to my mouse to the hotspot for all windows, hover above iTunes, focus on the window, and drop the picture in. If I need to normalize a track, I select it in iTunes, Ctrl + Space + 'iv' to launch iVolume, and then Alt + Enter to begin normalizing. I don't even need to click around.
Also, Mac developers usually try to create their software for consistency with the rest of the OS, so you can usually trust keyboard shortcuts to work the same. Eg. Apple + F for fullscreen in iTunes, works in VLC player as well. It's these minor details that adds up to the user experience.
Re: fucking PC laptops...macbooks, here I come
i think that windows shortcuts aren't that bad, either. Except that we don't have apples on our keyboard, but a nifty flag looking windows start button, which can supply you with all kinds of 'cuts.
Re: fucking PC laptops...macbooks, here I come
agreed, I use my keyboard so much for windows shortcuts (esp in word) it's one of my biggest fears of having to deal with the learning curve that keeps me away.

Very good article about PCs, and why do they work so lame with Vista.

Good article for those that simply didn't know and just like to be angry.
Re: fucking PC laptops...macbooks, here I come
do the right thing m8 and learn how to build your own, u get more satisfaction out of doing it and it anything goes wrong u know what to replace by eliminating possible faults, its easy
Re: fucking PC laptops...macbooks, here I come
Being a system builder, I understand what red1 is saying but not everyone has the time or effort to put into building a system. We know it's easy for us but not everyone is inclined enough to care or know that it really is that easy. If anything, they should read, read, read articles and reviews of pre-built systems and see what known issues are out there (if any) and then base their purchase on that. Is it really that hard to put in an hour or two of research before you go make a major purchase such as a computer? C'mon, peepole.
Re: fucking PC laptops...macbooks, here I come
i just bought my first mac last month and it is nice. first time ever using any type of mac product so im a pretty big n00b when it comes to this. it is nice having a unix kernel underneath the hood, that is what i am going to enjoy messing with, plus the nice looking OS with a stable kernel underneath = great in my book.
Re: fucking PC laptops...macbooks, here I come
i have been building my PCs from the start, but could never go with wanted configuration, always had to sacrifice something because of price, and that is the point where you take something which is similar but not like the thing, and at the end you come up with unstable rig.
easy as that, so i think 2 hours arent enough for a stable system.
Re: fucking PC laptops...macbooks, here I come
update... I decided to get the thing repaired, since I have owned it for way to short of a time period.
After a few hundred bucks and TWO WEEKS I get it back...and the thing won't even fucking START. Turns out they forgot to do some static electricity power discharge...so once that is finally taken care of everything starts to work...
...and now every time the fan runs, there is this awful grinding noise.
 oh sweet jesus...just end it all now.
Re: fucking PC laptops...macbooks, here I come
dude.....why???
Re: fucking PC laptops...macbooks, here I come
Because he lives in Ohio?
Re: fucking PC laptops...macbooks, here I come
^^ that's part of it. The other part is that for $200 I felt like it would be worth it to try to fix it, rather than trash the computer that I had only had for about a year. I still plan to get a mac when I get out of school, but I was hoping I could get at least another year out of this HP... apparently not
Re: fucking PC laptops...macbooks, here I come
Damn, dude. Only a year? Sorry to hear that. That's ass. Really. Good luck with the next purchase. Obviously, if you get a Mac, you should not suffer from any hardware issues as they make their own hardware to work with their software.
Re: fucking PC laptops...macbooks, here I come
dual boot that lappy with Leopard osx86!
Re: fucking PC laptops...macbooks, here I come
i am thinkning about making the swithc to mac from a pc (sony vaio). But i am a bit weary about the transition. How hard is it to do simple things...are there shortcuts on keyboard like there are on pcs? you know things we've become use to an pcs....
thanks,
Re: fucking PC laptops...macbooks, here I come
There's almost all the same stuff. It's just a few little things that are different that take a minute or 6 to get used to. When you wanna screen capture on your PC, it's really easy, you just hit the prtSc button. But on a Mac you've gotta do Control+Shift+4 which allows you to choose the exact part of your screen you wanna capture. If you do it with a 3 on the end, i think that just does the full screen.
Re: fucking PC laptops...macbooks, here I come
Don't be afraid to make the switch. Macs are seriously easy to use. It was much harder to go from a Mac to PC-DOS back in the day. I was much too spoiled with my Mac vs. the goddamn IBM.
Re: fucking PC laptops...macbooks, here I come
We got a Mac Powerbook for my gf and she loves it compared to her old PC. I also built a new system a while ago and I had one of the hard drives dedicated to running OSX (look up Hackintosh for more info). I've played with it a bit and while I started out on a Macs (Classic), I get too annoyed by some simple things. As much as I complain about M$ products I don't ever think I could fully switch to Mac. My gf wanted to copy a dvd on her Mac and we finally had to switch over to XP (in bootcamp) to run DVDshrink to copy the damn thing. I continually run into simple problems like that on the Macs. But either way the nice thing about a Mac is that you can use to same hardware to run Windows if you really want, so you never really have to fully switch.
On a side note MS is pretty much abondoning Vista at this point. They already consider it a finished product (pretty much their shortest ever) and are moving onto the next iteration of Windows. I don't think comparing Vista to anything is really a good measure.

I feel that way about using Ubuntu. I love the darn thing but doing the simplest of things takes 5 steps - which is only 1 in Windows. Couple of the things are...
Inability to copy and paste text from your active PC over RDC. And it doesnt end there, even though I got XP to boot in Ubuntu through virtualization, I STILL cant copy and paste text. So links to music, etc. will not work, you have to manually type it it.
Getting SAMBA to work, just so I can save what I download to my Media Server (this is hands down my biggest gripe). I thought once you share a drive with Samba, its set. Apparently not, you actually end up sharing your LOCAL drive which means you have to reverse map it. I couldn't be ARSED to do all that shit. Just boot back into Windows.
Re: fucking PC laptops...macbooks, here I come
If you game don't get a Mac.
Gamers :Boom:Mac.
MSI has really stepped up in the last couple of years you might check out their GX720 laptop. They even have it with wood trim...

^ ain't that the truth. i had a Mac all thru the late 90s. fun, creative stuff Mac's are, but i'm all about the PC, despite how 'dirty' they can be.. imo. PC is still parlance for now, in terms of encompassing functions. i think Macs are for the future tho. i managed to cop a decent custom PC laptop and i dont think i will be switching until i need to incorporate Ableton in a live gig.
btw. what is the true story between Apple and Microsoft, back in the early os days?
Re: fucking PC laptops...macbooks, here I come
I have had a lot of problems with my Macbook so far. Broken HD, heat issues, noise issues and then recently the logic board went out. They wanted $1000 to fix it, but I called up and managed to get them to do it for free. Nice to see some customer support for once.

Check the man page for the app, but you should be able to do this if it is supported. You might have to use a special key sequence, or right click somewhere on the window and choose paste, but this is possible.

Re: fucking PC laptops...macbooks, here I come
yea but doesn't that setup a samba share on the local folder accessible on a windows machine, I want it the other way around i.e. map a windows shared network drive onto ubuntu and just redirect the download directly from ubuntu onto my windows machine.
there's a 55 page thread on ubuntuforums.org that shows how to do it and I just couldn't be bothered in dealing with another long thread (having dealt with the one in getting samba to work)
Re: fucking PC laptops...macbooks, here I come
I dropped my first IBM/Lenovo laptop. It fell out of the case and hit a cement floor hard and fried the LCD screen. The screen was replaced under warranty - which was unbelievable. The second screen burned out because the installer didn't run the wires properly and they were pinched in the hinge. Again, the screen was replaced under warranty. I had to return the laptop after 1.5 years because I changed companies, but it was going strong despite being dropped.
My second IBM/Lenovo laptop is 5+ years old. The USB went out on it a couple of years ago, which was solved with an add-in card. Otherwise it's tip-top.
My current IBM/Lenovo is just about 3 years old. I had to replace the battery last week, but otherwise it's tip-top.
The point: I've had real good luck with IBM/Lenovo laptops, for what it's worth.
I lost the LCD screen on an old Compaq laptop that I had. You could see the image on the screen, but the backlight was inoperable. Taking it apart and getting the screen out was complicated but not impossible, however the replacement part was so expensive I felt I was better off spending the $$$ on a new laptop rather than fixing one that was several years old.

Ah, I think you just need the smbfs package then. You can mount a remote samba share as a mountpoint on your linux box and then write to it like any other dir.

Re: fucking PC laptops...macbooks, here I come
ok...looks like it's gonna happen for real. I don't plan to foresake my vinyl, but with my job now (moving all over the country; 3x this yr alone), I just can't keep accumulating massive loads of records like I used to. So, I'm going to go partly Traktor Scratch. And, of course, you look like a noob unless you use it on a mac ;)
I'm thinking:
Refurbished certified macbook pro, bought direct from Apple. 2.4 Ghz Intel Core Duo 2 2 GB RAM (2 DIMMs - takes up all the slots..) 200 GB Serial ATA hard drive @ 5400 rpm 15.4" matte screen
all the other standards... 8x Superdrive; NVIDIA 8600 w/ 256 MB memory; AirPort Extreme wireless 802.11n; 1 Firewire 400, 1 Firewire 800, 2 USB 2.0, 1 Expresscard/34 slot
Am I missing anything as far as Traktor, Ableton, etc. goes? Should I be thinking more RAM?
Re: fucking PC laptops...macbooks, here I come
2G of ram? that seems like a good amount for most things, unless you are doing anything super intensive (video editing/final cut, etc), I would think that would be good unless you are planning on rendering the next Pixar movie from your laptop while you are on the road :D
Re: fucking PC laptops...macbooks, here I come
You can always use more RAM as it's so damn cheap. Better to be overprepared and worry-free. ;)
