Re: MacBook v MacBook Pro
Now we need Microcroft to come out with a way to use mac software on a windows machine.
Microsoft hasn't done it, but some hackers have. My brother-in-law has OS X running on an old Dell Latitude laptop. I don't know how you go about it, but it can be done.

Re: MacBook v MacBook Pro

thx for the info- i don't need to run two OS's simultaneously. The only time i can see myself running windows is for my design work, and i don't need to switch back and forth for that. Do the design work, print, file, reboot, run OSx.

When are you looking to buy?
Pulled the trigger on the Pro today. 8)

I have barely been able to do any design work on my laptop for almost a month due to it being a major piece of shit. Every time i try to render anything, it shuts down, not to mention the numerous other problems it has. I've been fighting it for awhile now with work, I really couldn't wait any longer for work reasons and for sanity reasons. I almost bought the Sony Kamal has a few weeks ago just to be done with it, but i knew in the back of my mind i wasn't going to be completely happy with it in the end. Very pleased to be making the switch from ASSFUCKPC to MBP.

Re: MacBook v MacBook Pro

Nice Jenks! You will love it. I bath my machine. and have sex with it.

The rad thing when Leopard comes out it will also improve your system performance. It will be 32 to 64 switch. I stayed up for 7 hours the first I got the sucker running. Turning on my backlit keyboard, turning it off. It is amazing what a solid platform can do. You might a few downloads/updates to acquire. If you have any issue(s), question, tag me a PM.

congrats on the new wife. ;) What did you spec out on?

Congrats, dude -- will be right behind you in a few weeks (still waiting for Leopard).
What did you spec out on?
i didn't go balls out. got the 15.4 widescreen. 2.2 core 2 duo thing. 2 gigs ram. and everything else, nvidia 8600daskdfa;we whatever. plan on going to the max on ram, but through that other site, not through mac. thx for the tip btw.

boot camp with vista ftw.

i wanted to wait for leopard, but just couldn't. figure it won't be that expensive of an upgrade should i want it in the future.

macmall dot com gives away a free hp all in one printer and a free shoulder bag with purchase too. i'll either use them or ebay em.

Re: MacBook v MacBook Pro

nice. def recommend 4 gigs. turned all my speeds around. 2.2 is a nice machine. The learning curve for mac is very short and quick lived. You will see how things just fucking work. It is truly amazing. I personally love everything about my new laptop. Just a fucking work horse. It is rad working in pitch black. You have the keyboard lit, you walk away and you see the little apple glowing in the back. Sure these aren't reasons to buy a laptop ... never mind they are.

Can not wait for your review. Did you know that the apple laptop series is the hottest ticketed item from apple? It is crazy. Def there strong spot.

In regards to Leopard ... you are looking at 129.99 for premium, 129.99 for ultimate, you are looking at 129.99 for home. That is a Steve Job's joke. ;)

Re: MacBook v MacBook Pro

damn right, love my MBlack, glad you made the trek over jenksy. and yea i am def looking forward to leopard, specially the multiple desktop windows, just like linux, LOVE IT

Re: MacBook v MacBook Pro

You'll be wanting the 4GB of ram. Don't sell yourself short. And for this laptop, don't let the cooling ports get clogged with dust and lint like so many people do and then blame the laptop for being shitty when it was themselves all along. ;)

Re: MacBook v MacBook Pro

^^^ very true. Don't use this thing on your lap when doing hardcore processing. Your eggs will bake, cook, and fry. The thing gets extremely hot.

Re: MacBook v MacBook Pro

I still can't bring myself to like laptops. Can't type as fast on the keyboard and I like big screens.

Re: MacBook v MacBook Pro

I was also concerned about the laptop world. I truly needed something for mobility and travel. It was a hard choice and after much reading and research the MBP came to light.

I think that is one of the main differences between PC and the Apple world. Apple constantly is working on getting there software better and better. While the PC world relies more on the hardware world. The keyboard on the MBP is really nice, I am actually very pleased it with it. Seems natural to me.

I'm not saying good or bad but obviously if you have a company that makes the software to run on their own hardware, you're going to have less conflicts and it shouldn't be as problematic as what can happen on the PC side. You also need to remember that there are many third party companies that make shitty equipment for the PC world and it's the fault of the users who try to save a buck rather than go with good, quality parts. I don't see all of these weird issues that many people have and I'm thankful for that. I'm glad that I'm not some cheap ass. Ha ha.

Re: MacBook v MacBook Pro

how many gigs should i partition for windows vista on this mac? microsoft recommends 40gb with 15gb available. so 55gb?? seems a bit much for only wanting to run windows and my design program.

#913708Post 94 of 142

Re: MacBook v MacBook Pro

How big is your hard drive in total? If you're only going to use Vista and your design program, I wouldn't go any more than 20GB and that's being quite safe. There's no way you'd exceed that. Even if over time, the data from your design program goes over, you can always back that shit up on external and that will still be accessible with ease.

#913710Post 95 of 142

Re: MacBook v MacBook Pro

160 gigs.

so, 20 vista and 140 osx? design program is sort of like autocad. do i need to account space for that too on the windows side, and include space for it's hd space requirements to run?

#913740Post 96 of 142

Re: MacBook v MacBook Pro

Shit. If it's 160GB then just make it 40 and you're golden. Shouldn't have to worry about it. Do you know how large each file is after you save it? That should give you a good estimate as to how much you want to partition and yes, you'd be accounting for the space to run your Windows application.

#913742Post 97 of 142

Re: MacBook v MacBook Pro

i say fuck vista and do a 10-20gb XP partition, but that is me...

on my MB, i have a 5gb xp partition to use my cpa software and still have 1gb free (not that i use it anyway). i went for the minimal since i will not be using windows on the MB nearly at all...

Re: MacBook v MacBook Pro

15" macbook pro is great. I don't desire the 17". If i need a bigger screen it's usually when I'm at a desk and can plug in to an external monitor.

regular mac books are great too. It' s the os I like on mac these days.

My pro heats up really hot, and battery doesn't last forever. Honestly, the pro is going to die out in one way or another before you say "wow I really had this thing forever and now it's time to upgrade." The backlit keys are a non issue. You may ONLY want them because you don't have them. I've NEVER said "glad i have these!" and I work in the dark all the time.

I like my 120GB hdd and would love to have had the 180 but that's cause I have my audio library on here as well as parallels and lots of coding tools.

Re: MacBook v MacBook Pro

I would go at least 40 gb for vista (considering all the apps you'll install and updates, you'll fill it up mighty quick jenks)

btw post some photos will ya

Re: MacBook v MacBook Pro

iTunes. different way to do the music thing than i'm used to. all of my encoded records, the stuff i use for djing, just trying to figure out the best way to put it on the mac and use it is the shitter.

can i just play tracks from a location (my external hd) instead of it copying them into itunes? make sense?

also, missing that right click. lol.

#914672Post 111 of 142

Re: MacBook v MacBook Pro

Rather than copying them into iTunes, just point iTunes at them using the "Add Folder to Library." That doesn't copy anything, it just tells iTunes where to look for them. That way, you've got them "loaded" into iTunes and can access them that way, i.e., fully integrated with the OS, but you still have the original files where you originally had them, in what I imagine is some nested folder set-up that's familiar to you.

#914702Post 112 of 142

Re: MacBook v MacBook Pro

Don't use iTunes. It makes your compressed files sound even worse. Seriously annoying.

#914802Post 113 of 142

Re: MacBook v MacBook Pro

Cover flow and just point the mp3 files to itunes. If you drag and drop they usually double load. I actually play most of my singles and set through quicktime. There are mp3 players you can get, I think beatport has one. I listen music through my iPod not through my system. Just reduces my resources and gives me that extra mobility.

PS. Ford and Chevy is you ask me.

Re: MacBook v MacBook Pro

Sucks they don't have winamp for macs. I don't care for itunes much.

#914850Post 115 of 142

Re: MacBook v MacBook Pro

they have many options, but winamp is nice. I do agree.

#914856Post 116 of 142

Re: MacBook v MacBook Pro

Yeah. WInAmp, with the extra EFX processors is freakin' noice. Definitely the way to go with compressed audio files. Can you use QCD on a Mac?

#918083Post 117 of 142

Re: MacBook v MacBook Pro

not sure. I use my iPod for my heavy listening. Let's me step out for a smoke and continue the rhythm. will look around.

#918453Post 118 of 142

Re: MacBook v MacBook Pro

fucking itunes. :x

winamp > itunes x eleventy billion

that's my only complaint so far with the mac. i'm getting used to everything else. the right click thing doesn't bother me anymore, that took like a day to get over when i thought it was going to take a long time. the screen on this thing is beautiful. lcd backlit or someshit. dunno. looks awesome tho. keyboard is so fresh to type on. like a 10 yr old boys ass. or something.

this was funny...when i took the laptop out of the box, there was this tiny square manual and i thought, hmmm, that's it huh? hmmmm, what do i do know? guess i'll open it and turn it on. i pushed the button and almost instantly, it just came on. it didn't "boot up" or whatever the fuck pcs do, it just came on and was ready to go.
