Re: MacBook v MacBook Pro
I like having choices and I was actually kidding about how "ugly" they are. I just would prefer to take out the guts and use the case that I want 100%. They are quality cases after all. You do know who makes them right?
Re: MacBook v MacBook Pro
No? Who makes them? Always assumed they're made by Apple.

They're made by Chinks.

Re: MacBook v MacBook Pro
I have a white Macbook, and it's fine for ableton, torq, etc. I would def like the bigger screen of the Pro though.
Re: MacBook v MacBook Pro
The girl next to me on the plane yesterday had a MacBook. Fucking ugly and tiny. That thing would be annoying. I guess she was too poor to pony up for a decent laptop.

Than why are they still so fucking expensive...Oh that's right, Because Jobs is a greedy ass.
Re: MacBook v MacBook Pro
quality not quantity my good old Jeffrey boy. ;)
Re: MacBook v MacBook Pro
I grew up with Macs. My first computer was when the very first Mac came out. I've used Windows based systems and Macs and have found good and bad in each. The main problem I have with a Mac is customizability. I'm the summabitch that when I do finally buy a Mac, I'm going to rip it out of its case and pick the one that I want. I'm annoyed by all of the white too. I'm not a fan of white electronics. I'm heterosexual, goddamnit!
Re: MacBook v MacBook Pro
With a company like Apple, they can still have mad quality with the quantity they produce. It's not like they make limited edition computers or something like that. LOL.
Re: MacBook v MacBook Pro
I have a 17" Macbook Pro and it is pure love. I am a web developer so having the larger screen size makes the pro ideal for the work I do.
I have been running a beta version of Leopard ( I am part of the Apple Developer Network) and can only say it puts Vista to shame!
Re: MacBook v MacBook Pro
I was thinking about the 17 as well. Too large for me. I just go external out and get more real estate. It was a hard call. But I am also in love.
Re: MacBook v MacBook Pro
the only thing that bugs me about the 17" is that the batteries don't last long at all. My Toshiba laptop I can get the damn battery to last 4 hours on the full charge. Awesome!!!
Re: MacBook v MacBook Pro
I get about 4.5 on my 15. I have pushed 5 once but not doing anything intense and simple asdf functions with low screen brightness.
Giddy-Giddy-Ya!

macbook is and exellent product
Re: MacBook v MacBook Pro
15" is way too small. And yes, that's what she said.

lol...is that what this boils down to?

almost reminds of the same argument from 2003
Re: MacBook v MacBook Pro
is it worth $150 extra to go to a 7200rpm HD over the 5400rpm HD?
Re: MacBook v MacBook Pro
Hmm... I would say "no". It should be a little zippier, but there have also been some big issues with 7200 RPM laptop drives and the extra heat they throw out.
Unless those have been remedied...

see for yourself.
Re: MacBook v MacBook Pro
after reviewing that ^ i'd say no, it's not worth it. thx.
Re: MacBook v MacBook Pro
exactly.
you will get some more zip working with large files but not much, in fact very little. ... you are truly better off buying more ram. Crucial and OWC have 4 gigs fairly priced ... the Apple store is just rape-of-a-price.
Re: MacBook v MacBook Pro
OWC has 4gigRAM for $249
mac wants $750 for that upgrade. thx for the tip!
Re: MacBook v MacBook Pro
yeah. huge cut. great memory. I did the same deal. I was almost stupid enough to pay the 750 at time of buy. thank goodness I waited and researched.
Re: MacBook v MacBook Pro
did you get the .mac dom?
Re: MacBook v MacBook Pro
No, I did not. The only reason is because I pay for web hosting from mediatemple and ultrahost. Otherwise I would have reviewed that option. The neat thing about .mac is it will back up your files to the server, plus a lot of apple software is compatible with the service. ;)
Re: MacBook v MacBook Pro
Never get upgrades through the manufacturer. It's always cheaper to get the stuff on your own and slap it in. 7200 rpm for the win. 5400 rpm is fucking annoying and you'll be pissed off about it.
Re: MacBook v MacBook Pro
Parallels or Boot Camp?
And is Applecare worth it?
Re: MacBook v MacBook Pro
After review, seems parallels just emulates windows or something, while boot camp allows you to actually run windows from boot.

Yes. It all depends on which windows apps you "need" to run and in what environment you want to run them in.
If you want the windows environment, boot camp is the way to go... but there really isnt a need for that these days, mostly.
Re: MacBook v MacBook Pro
The reason i've not made the mac switch until now is because the design software i use for work, 2020design, is only for Windows. So, if i'm reading this parallel vs bootcamp comparison correctly, i'm going to need bootcamp to get the full use out of my design program? yes?
Re: MacBook v MacBook Pro
I would get Applecare. I would've been covered for a new logicboard and some kind of monitor inverter cable on my old iBook if I had it. I bought it for my new macbook just in case.

Probably, but here's the thing, boot camp is free. So you already have it!

depends upon what that program requires in terms of resources. When you're running Parallels, you're essentially running two OSs simultaneously, and they are eating up that RAM. Parallels also lacks the ability to do certain things that require hardware acceleration, or some shit like that. The big plus to Parallels, at least as I see it, is that you can switch back and forth between OS X and Windows on the fly, copy and paste between them, etc. Boot Camp requires that you restart your system to access Windows, and then restart again to go back to the mac environment.
When are you looking to buy?
Re: MacBook v MacBook Pro
Yep. They have had software you could use windows on their computers for years now. It just wasn't as sturdy as it is now. Now we need Microcroft to come out with a way to use mac software on a windows machine.
