Anyone get a pre-order for one of these? I want one so bad that I'm thinking about camping outside of a bestbuy/circuit city for one when they come out.

Re: Ps3

I hate to be a downer, but the ps3 is going to fail. Between the price and the fact that Sony STILL hasnt worked out it's online system this one will most likely go the way of the dreamcast.

Re: Ps3

I've been seriously debating between this and the XBox considering Sugana's going back to school and is going to have absolutely no free time for the next year and half, I need something other than the Tube for my weekends

Moreover, considering that the XBox interfaces with Windows Media Center via USB, I'm really beginning to sway in favor of the XBox :p

Re: Ps3

Xbox 360 will triumph, it has twelve months worth of extra gaming titles, it's already moving into it's second generation of games. It is much cheaper, and developers say it is much easier to program for meaning that the PS3s extra power can't even be utilised properly. It has some of the best exclusives on console - Halo, Gears of War, Bioshock, and simultaneous releases of GTA and Pro Evo etc, which was the only reason to own a PS2 in the first place!

Of course all of this, plus the fact that Sony's success now depends on the success of BluRay technology.

Oh and not to forget Xbox Live, the finest online gaming platform on the planet bar none!

xBox 360 all the way.

listen, my roomie is a gamestop GM, and im telling you, they said the demand for it is so far triple what the 360 was. they are already booked out on shipments through march.

I dunno. PS3 will certainly have some great exclusives as well, and programmers complained about the PS2 being too hard to program for as well, and that didn't seem to stand in its way.
Of course all of this, plus the fact that Sony's success now depends on the success of BluRay technology.
How do you figure? Consoles have long used proprietary cartridges or other formats that only work with the console. That a console will also play blu-ray discs is a feather in its cap, not a handcuff to its success. If blu-ray goes the way of the Betamax, the machine still does other things like, um, PLAYING GAMES, so it will just become yet another proprietary format that is only useful for that particular console.

Also, I'm starting to think that the blu-ray vs HD-DVD thing may end up being much ado about nothing, now that they have figured out a way to inexpensively put both formats on different layers of the same disc. If I were a movie distributor, I'd just do that rather than risking picking the wrong format and missing out on half the market...

Re: Ps3

Demand at the early stages means nothing, there is a larger base of hardcore PS3 fans than xBox fans. However, the console wars will be won over the long term with the non console dedicated public making informed choices rather than choices based on loyalty! How many of these initial customers are also going to be disappointed by the fact that Sony will not be able to meet their preorders due to their manufacturing delays?

The only guaranteed coup for Sony will be the Japanese market ... the rest of the world is up for grabs. Just remember how Sega rested on their laurels and scoffed at the new kid Sony, how there was a huge loyal Sega Fanbase who pointed and laughed at the strange grey machine that uninformed newbies were buying.

The consumer by and large is a fickle being. Very few people care about the power of a machine (see Sega Saturn and Dreamcast v Sony Playstation, and xBox v PS2) It's about the games - have you seen the PS3 launch lineup? It's astonishingly bad. All these promised Assassin's Creed and GTA 4 exclusives are now multi platform! Whereas xbox360 games like Dead Rising are already taking the malls by storm (pardon the pun).

Oh, and don't underestimate the WII either .. it looks like loads of fun!

Only time will tell though.

i think there must be rogue microsoft agents all over digg.com linking to articles because there are new stories on there 24/7 about how bad the ps3 is going to be overpriced, underpowered, short on supply etc...

Because the Blu Ray technology is how Sony is justifying it's extortionate price tag. I know that Xbox now has the HD drive ... but it's a choice, it's not forced on the user.

And don't get me wrong, I will buy any machine that has the right games at the right price, when the price of the PS3 drops, and there are games worth the purchasing, then I shall have a 360 and a PS3, and maybe also a WII!

But I just have a wee feeling that it's not going to happen the way Sony want it to.

Re: Ps3

I do agree to an extent that the PS3 will be its own downfall in terms of price. Whatever happened to the days when you could get a console for a unified gaming experience and purchase it for just under $200 and not have the need to build a gamer PC worth hundreds more to better your gaming experience which differed over every other game.

I wont be surprised if they start dishing out toothpaste dispensers + drink coolers in the console pushing the price up to $1000. I mean who really needs an IBM Deep Blue Cell Processor unit if its going to waste 70% of its ability doing nothing if the game in fact demands only 30%.

I do think MS made a darn good move in offering 3 versions/prices for the 360. I could do without the milk colored unit.

Re: Ps3

As for the Blu Ray argument, like I said above, its a useless option to have considering the "PURPOSE" of the hardware.

Its meant to be a gamer, be a good one, dont try to babysit the kids as well.

I have a darn good upconverting DVD player and I'm not about to forsake on that DVD player just to drop excessive prices on the console AND pay beyond my means for supporting discs.

Yeah, but Sony is already committed to blu-ray, and it's already committed to the PS3. Seems like a deal where it's taking advantage of economies of scale rather than trying to foist their technology upon us. It's probably cheaper for them to use the existing blu-ray technology than to come up with yet another proprietary format, since a regular DVD can't hold enough data.

I view it as something that can only help, and can't really hurt.

#740118Post 16 of 68

Re: Ps3

A regular DVD has been fine for 360 games so far, and PS3 games are not going to be that much more in depth, if at all.

I can't imagine a game so large that it can't fit on a regular dual layered DVD that they needed to go Blu Ray. I mean 8.5 GB is REALLY REALLY massive amounts of code + images.

Re: Ps3

don't forget the music and cgi videos. those tend to take up quite a bit of space alone

Re: Ps3

still.... I mean there are true Hi Def movies out on regular DVDs even before Blu Ray was out. That still doesnt justify it

#740285Post 20 of 68

Re: Ps3

There was a time that I thought an 8 meg hard drive was an enormous amount of space, more than I could ever expect to use. If there's one thing that history has taught us, though, it's that there is always a need for more space, more speed, more power, more flexibility. It may seem like plenty now, but when you consider that the normal life-cycle of one of these consoles is 5-6 years, it isn't hard to imagine that having that extra space could be handy going forward.

Really, though, my primary point has less to do with that and more to do with the fact that Sony is already doing the blu-ray thing, so they are able to take advantage of certain economies of scale by using the same technology in their game console as well.

really? do you have any examples? They obviously have the HD-DVD, but that's not the same as a DVD. Also, without a player that can produce true HD output (i.e., as opposed to upsampled), it isn't HD. I'm confused.

#740392Post 22 of 68

Re: Ps3

I was downright certain that Hi-Def format can be provided on regular dual layered CDs but I stand corrected there toasty, thanks for making me look. Seems Hi Def is currently offered in 2 formats i.e. HD DVD / Blu Ray

Regular DVD formats are upto 480 lines and Hi-Def are in 720 and 1080 lines. I did a cursory search but was unable to find regular dvds in 720 line resolutions which would make it a high definition format.

Re: Ps3

The Sony Playstation is going to destroy the Xbox 360 in every possible way.The only thing X Box has going for it is X Box live, in my opinion. People who had to make a choice and couldn't afford both, the Ps3 is definately the better buy.

Re: Ps3

why would you want to pay $600 right off the bat for a system that hasnt even given it's online game plan to third party developers?

yes there will be a certain amount of demand (especially before launch) but I think the price point is going to keep many people away...people that have families to support or parents who dont feel like dropping so much money ona console for their kids.

and based on past system launches...how many of those preorders do you think people will end up selling on ebay to sony fanboys?

ps3 has some great looking games no doubt...but i still think it is going to cause the demise of the franchise, we have seen it time and time again.

also for me, not only have i enjoyed the 360 games, but i am immensly satisfied with using the 360 to set up a wireless network to stream my music downstairs and (w/ the addition of a free tv tuner card) a free tivo

#741344Post 26 of 68

how are you streaming wirelessly off your xbox? what sort of hardware did you need to buy ?

I don't think so. By that reckoning the DVD player in the PS2 was also useless... but how many people here had a PS2 as their first DVD machine? I know I certainly did. at the time I could get a decent DVD player for some ?200 or a PS2 for the same price. Made the deal for me.

a standard blu-ray player is running 1,000+. the only battle right now is between blu-ray and hd dvd. omg. i have to say this. beta vs. vhs. omg. like omg.

Re: Ps3

itll still do well, but one thing that is gonna kill themselves, is the hyped amount they would be delivering & they amount they are actually shipping. i am a loyal sony man. but i may be in the market for whatever next gen system is available. i am tired of sitting on the sidelines waiting. most games now days releases on both companies to help save development costs & they are less exclusives now. & im also a little concerned about all the bugs they may have on the 1st round of em.

#741717Post 32 of 68

Re: Ps3

in my books ps3 win will hands down ... i havent seen/played a single game on xbox or x360 that has me completely sold yet .. to me they are still playing catch up in terms on content ... only thing that microsoft has on the upperhand at the moment is xbox live

only thing that stops me from getting a ps3 any time from launch is its price ... so in the meantime i would get myself a nintendo wii :)

and i think the arguement between hd-dvd and blu-ray is crap imo ... there wont be any clear winner when some electronics company from china figure out how to replicate both technology cheap and come out with a cross-platform player

#742024Post 33 of 68

Re: Ps3

the 2 MAJOR reasons for me to go XBox are

 1. Price
 2. Xtender Device for Window Media

Not to mention most of my buds have XBox so XBox live will be more fun

#742209Post 34 of 68

Re: Ps3

online support for either is not a huge deal to me since i dont play online. & the price of xbox is quite attractive.

ahhh ... the old buddy factor ... i'll give it probably another 2 years and we probably could get a ps3 online party going ;)

imagine them coming up with a online version of GTA and everyone is jacking each others vehicle .. sounds fun to me

Re: Ps3

Well, we've got one on pre-order... we're supposed to get it in two weeks. We waited in line at 4am at game stop and ended up being the first people to pre-order.

It's supposed to be a present for our child for christmas but he says he would rather have a 360 because of some soccer game for the 360. The thing is, is he doesn't know we got it for him and he doesn't think they're coming out till April of next year... he's very certain that he wants a 360 but I'm still really considering keeping the ps3 because I really want it. heh

Nope definetly not. At this stage, xbox 360 has the only two really proper next gen football (sorry .. .soccer) games!

As for the blu-ray vs hd dvd being similar to the beta max vs vhs .... the only reason the inferior quality of the vhs beat the superior quality beta max was because the porn industry turned to vhs as the cheaper way to distribute their (art) ... apparently ... Would be funny if pornography killed the PS3 LMAO!!!

But oh I wish Metal Gear Solid was on xbox360, if only I had a genie!!!
