Finally, Florida gets a show worth going to see, besides the shows during WMC.

anyone know what time Simons closes?
anyone know what time Simons closes?
:CandyPop: Unless something has changed recently, I think they kick people out around 2 AM. Gotta love the fun police. NOT! :Bullshit: :MadNow:

Definitely not Florida law. It is just the bedwetting libs in this town, namely the city council, that screwed up Gainesville. You would figure that for a liberal college town, they would be pretty open to stuff like this. Nope, definitely not the case.
Oh well, it's the after-parties that really kick anyway.
2am? jesus. Some of my mates wen to see Sasha and Steve Porter in Montreal july 9th. Sasha didnt even come on until around 4am or so, played until about 9:45am. Florida needs to sort that out, 2am is just bloody ridiculous.

It's not a florida law...Space in Miami closes whenever people leave...I heard last year S&D didn't stop until somewhere around 12 the next afternoon. It's just around here, laws got tight when drugs/raves were getting out of control. It wasn't always like this...I remember hearing stories of Simons being opened pretty late with some kick ass shows. Unfortunately, it's in the past tho :(
The issue came up before the city council about a year and a half ago and the student body government was involved. They were trying to push closing until 3 am. The current mayor (elected in March of 2004) supports a closing time of 4 am with last call coming at 2 am. The defense being put up by supporters of a later closing time is that last call is at 1:30 am and everyone is pushed out on the streets about 15 minutes later (in Gainesville it is mandatory that the building is vacated of patrons no later than 2 am or you face criminal liability). This results in hordes of drunk college kids flooding the streets of downtown Gainesville with nowhere to go but in their cars.
Personally I think 2 am is absolutely absurd, but I don't live there anymore and have no say in the matter. It is up to the residents of that town, the true ACRs (Alachua County Residents) to elect officials that promise to do something about it. It seems as though a change has begun, but a reflection of the new attitudes still remains to be seen.
9 HOURS!!!!!! woohoo.. sorry, had to let that out :D
Re:: James Zabiela, 7/22 @ Simons in Gainesville, Fl....

I have nothing but good things to say about the show last night. James put on one of the best shows I have seen in a while. His energy was non stop, the crowd was very much into it, and his passion for what he is doing was obvious. JAMES ZABIELA
UNBELIEVABLE!!!!!
Re:: James Zabiela, 7/22 @ Simons in Gainesville, Fl....
OOPS DOUBLE POST
:Bingo: Had a wonderful time as well!! The energy was so much better than when I saw him at WMC with burridge. I was so disappointed with that show...but I think the main problem was that it was on tuesday and most people were already hurting pretty bad from the massive partying they had done. Last night, one of the funniest things I have ever seen was when someone in the booth, who appeared to be far gone was fumbling with the mic and after he couldn't get it on decided to try talking into the headphones...repeatedly :ROFLMAO: That was just too great! All-in-all I had a good time. Seems like shows have been picking up lately, first Cattaneo and now JZ...what's next for central FL?
everything was nice, except for that stupid looking tart dancing on the bar, in front of the booth! I wanted to throw something at her, lol. plus we got there so early driving from tampa, we got in free. we got there at like just after 9, the bloke at the door let us in. he was very cool, as was most of the staff. i had never been there before. the Simons hey day was before me moving to Florida. But I liked the vibe, and hopefully they will get more good dj's.
P.S. how about that last trakc, Blur Song 2 re-edit, very nice way to end I thought.

You do realize that some headphones can be plugged into the mic port on the mixer and used as a mic, right? That guy was the DJ that was supposed to open for James Zabiela. :WinkNSmi:
Re:: James Zabiela, 7/22 @ Simons in Gainesville, Fl....
had a great time opening---james was AWESOME :)
and im WELL aware you can plug your headphones into the mic port, AND we had nice microphone too, it just was quarter inch...its a shame that mixer had XLR mic input only, and despite my best drunken efforts, i couldnt get the mic or the headphones to work with the minimal amount of inputs i was working with on the mixer...make fun of my drunken efforts all you want, i was taking advantage of free drinks for djs 8)
clearly not my fault, we were just trying to thank you all for coming out!
by the way, hope you all liked how simons looked, we spent 2 days bringing in extra lighting, setting up video, hanging banners, basically making the atmosphere as nice as possible for you all---i hope you appreciate the details that go into a night like this...
Re:: James Zabiela, 7/22 @ Simons in Gainesville, Fl....
I'm days delayed- but JZ was Great!! That's my first time seeing him live & I was definitly Impressed- His energy was Awesome, especailly considering the lack of energy from like 1/2 the crowd- Gotta love when a DJ smiles through like 75% of his set!! Right on!
Hydra- also - nice set- & it's nice to see a dj havin fun & bein so approachable on the floor..
I've got some good pics from the night.. = ) = )
