Mike, I hope you still had fun at the Game and I hope England will get better during the tournament. Besides Rooney's will to win, I did not see real highlights in the Game sadly but it was the 1st Game so fuck it. Congrats to the USA for scoring their 1st point.

Re: World cup: England v USA June 12th 2010

fair result, we were a completely different team after the goal.. after Gerrard scored it looked as though it might be 2 or 3 nil.. not sure why he took off Milner. SWP and Lennon were crap.. Lampard and Gerrard have NEVER been able to play well in midfield together

a 1-1 against USA now isn't the same as 1-1 in previous World Cups.. they are a well coached team with majority of their players based in Europe.. no shame except for the Green howler in goal, question is now what? you can't really replace him as he still kept it 1-1 and if you pull him you're taking a chance in ruining the rest of his career.. unless James is 100% fit, you go with the same goalie and get some consistancy back there.. and even James isn't my first choice as he's known for his mistakes back there too. We need a number 1 that we can count on for years to come, not an almost 40 year old at the tail end of his career.

Still should be England and USA coming out of that group, just hope we win the group, I don't want to meet Germany just yet, lol

Re: World cup: England v USA June 12th 2010

^^ but I want that Game at some point in the Tournament. Badly. But you are right with what you've said about the USA...they are far away from the easy opponents and point delievers they were. More professional approach and more players with contracts in Europe. Anyways, forget about the 1st Game but you guys have to win the other 2 ones...England can't fail in the group rounds but it's theoretically only one Game away from it.

thats the truth.

USA bounced one off Green onto the post in the seond half - could have won it on that alone.

Germany deffo looked best (I've seen) so far.

Re: World cup: England v USA June 12th 2010

I want to see England/Germany in the semis or final would be great!

I thought it was funny though seeing a head line "USA win 1-1" If the media looks at a tie against England as a "win", that's not saying much for their squad, I sure hope the USA team doesn't think that way and yes on paper it was 1-1 and they deservedly shared the points, but everyone on that US squad knows they were inches from being 1-0 and with no points

wow...Paraguay's keeper just made a complete mess out of a corner kick.. must be the ball ;)

i agree, the media is building England up to be world beaters, it's unfair on both accounts.. i said i hope the SQUAD realises not the media ;)

Re: World cup: England v USA June 12th 2010

i knew that. I was bringing it back round. :) England should have scored 3 and the goalie slip would have all been null and void.

Onward and upwards. I really hope the US do well just so that there is an increase in interest in world football. I remember watching the 2002 world cup on telemundo (or similar!) so the espn/abc coverage is at least a step up!

shame about them damn horns tho! i watched the argentine game on mute as it was so annoying.

Re: World cup: England v USA June 12th 2010

I still think USA and England will get out of the group as they should both win their next two matches.. the vuvuzelas don't even really bother me, and the talk of banning them is ridiculous, it's part of their culture in that country, it's such a constant sound after a few minutes in I don't even notice.. now, being in the stadium might be a different story, lol

the tie showed the English that they are not invincible like they initially claimed. glad their "we are going to 4-0 them" bubble burst
the tie showed the English that they are not invincible like they initially claimed. glad their "we are going to 4-0 them" bubble burst
Who claimed all that then? The English press? lol

I can't remember a lot about the game as we went out at 1pm so i was having trouble concentrating come kick off time. I also made the mistake of going to the bar about 20mins in and lost the good view i had.

What a fucking howler from Green but hey ho, it happens. Gotta feel for the bloke making a mistake like that in a world cup game, it's a shame he'll be remembered for that. We had chances the other end which were fluffed (heskey the worst culprit i'm afraid) but something like that by your keeper always stands out i guess..

I thought the game overall was very dull and both sides lacked spark. I don't see any reason why the USA can't build on that performance though as they looked a better side than they ever have done imo and good luck to them. England are now suffering from their old problem of having taken players with them who weren't 100% fit which is always a gamble and something of a tradition here.

I thought we were crying out for a wee man called Paul Scholes - but he's not there.

I chuckled at "1-1 win" - a sport blog here in one of the nationals had a guy ranting about everyone and he put up a great list of things wrong with the side, finishing with the killer line "this is why England lost and why they failed to score"

hahaha

exactly, even Alexi Lalas was called out for that when he was saying the same sort of crap, the England squad never said anything so stupid and the USA media was putting England right up there too.. it's laughable

I don't go to pubs to watch these matches, you never get to concentrate on the action and you end up spending loads of money

Green will only be remembered for that mistake if England get knocked out early

Re: World cup: England v USA June 12th 2010

I was totally blown away when I walked into the open air stadium. The crowd and the noise set against the backdrop of the Rustenberg hills was a site to see!

I thought the game was very average and because the of the blooper by Green the US got lucky. Still, at least he made amends when he pushed a shot onto the post, my heart was in my mouth at that stage.

According to Fifa only 6000 English fans bought tickets while the US bought 8000. I can tell you that there were at least 20,000 English and we did our best to sing above the noise of the vuvuzela. That's a bit difficult when you consider that one vuvuzela makes the same level of noise as a chain saw!

I have loads of pictures but the lead for my camera is at the office, I will upload when I get it.

I tried to Call Steve, Nick and Kamal and Tom. I think I got through to Nick but it just rang and rang. I could not connect to anyone else, maybe my network has put restrictions on me when I am out of the county?

Re: World cup: England v USA June 12th 2010

no idea mate, I got your message too late and wasn't able to send you a text in time.. I bet the atmosphere at these matches is electric

I also see the manufacturer of the vuvuzela is working on one that doesn't put out quite as much noise

My phone didn't ring and I had no unanswered call in my list so it didn't get through. Do you see a different provider name in your cell phone..normally they forward the mobile Serviced automatically to a local provider but maybe they don't have one in the area you are...or the roaming services are not sufficient. I am sure African networks are pretty busy these days. :)

Yeah, the local provider in SA was Vodacom. I could connect to all English and South African numbers, any numbers outside them countries and I got some strange message that was a little difficult to hear because of the horns. Not to worry, I just wanted to give you guys a taste of the atmosphere.
So did you dig my country?
Very much so. I'd heard a lot about Johannesburg before I got there, most of which were not good. Our hosts did a fantastic job of looking after us though and I never saw anything that would make me think twice about going again.

You are extremely lucky to live in a country where you can see so much wild life within a few hours of your front door. The safari we went on in Pilansburg absolutely blew me away. Obviously I've seen it all on tv but to see all the animals in their natural habitat brought tears to my eyes.

I could have done with it being summer though, god damn it was cold at night!
