Yeah, I was bummed, but I'm trying to keep it in perspective. We were picked to finish 7th in the Big XII this year, and now I wouldn't be surprised to see us show up in the top 10 in the nation in the final post-season rankings. Also, I don't know if you recall the whole clusterfuck that was the Mizzou basketball program at the end of Quinn Snyder's tenure, but it seemed like every day there was a new story leading off Sportscenter with some stranger-than-fiction tale about Ricky Clemons strangling someone or swapping racial epithets with the University Chancellor's wife. Also, there were rumors around Columbia that there were a lot of interpersonal issues on the team because the head coach was sleeping with the players' girlfriends. Yes, that is supposed to be plural. It was just embarassing. To go from that point -- where we were on probation -- to making it to the Elite 8 in three years is more than Tiger fans could have reasonably asked for, IMO.
One other thing about Mizzou's performance in the tourney makes me feel good about the program going forward -- that Memphis game. Not only did they lay over a hundred points on a team with one of the best defenses in the NCAA, but the game was just a blast to watch. I remember one of the announcers at the half saying something like, "Wow, I had no idea Missouri played so fast -- are the games always this much fun to watch?" Well, yes they are, and hopefully the fact that Mizzou got the chance to showcase their high energy and entertaining style of play on a national stage will get them a couple of extra nationally televised games in the years that follow. Makes it a lot easier to recruit when you're a regular presence on Big Monday or Big Tuesday on ESPN.
