just watching the press conference on satellite...

man, you gotta respect this guy. right up there with soscia, gardenhire and torre as top managers who get more outta what they're given.

just simple old school ideas, a blunt, yet personable demeanor in dealing with everyone who doesnt wear an MLB uniform.

makes the right decisions 9 outta 10. just a baseball lord up there with the best. and this year, with the injuries they had, and manny tanking it, and the shift to 90's yanks style team with a core of role players who are winners and not stat whores (attn:H.Steinbrenner)... man what a job.

respect.

Agreed tho. As much as i hate to admit it because i can't stand Boston, Francona is a hell of a manager. However, given his payroll and his players, we're not exactly talking about the guy having to dust the rust off a bunch of .220 hitters and making them champions. He's SUPPOSED to win with that payroll, and he is, so credit where it's due for sure.

Let's see Francona take LaRussa's payroll and team and see where he goes. I'm sure he'd do great, because he's a fine manager...im just sayin.

Re: francona.

guillen and pinella are great managers of talent, but have not proven they can squeeze the juice. francona, has...

im a fan of the game more than a yanks fan, if i havent proven that, you cant read ,,,

this guy,,... has the potential to be historical

jenks, dnt bring larussa into it.. he has done nada outside of proving he hcan take a bullpen of cyh young winners and do nothing,..... sorry.. ill deal with it in a different thread, ubt larussa= ruination of arms. he is on the second tier. hasnt done it consistently. went from A1, to shit .... duncan is duncan, and duncan could take me and you and place in 8th AND 9th innings, and win, but tony,... SHIT

I know you're a fan of the game, like me. It's your baseball opinions that i actually respect on this board.

But, you also had faith in the Cubs and Mets.

Re: francona.

i was just reading bill simmons' "mail bag" column and i spotted something that reminded me of tsl (thesightless)'s comments:
Q: How many more times are we going to be subjected to Tito Francona's bonehead decisions? He is great at managing players' egos and building relationships with them, but please get him a coach to do the X's and O's before he kills us. We can't keep overcoming his major screwups, can we? I've said it since 2004 and it is still true … just amazing we keep winning despite him. I set the over/under of his ALCS miscues at four! -- Randy, Derry, N.H. SG: You can read more of Randy's work at his "Mr. Ungrateful" blog. Here's my take on Tito: He has never been outmanaged in a playoff series; his players love him and play hard for him; he handles the media as deftly as anyone this side of Doc Rivers; and by all accounts, he's a genuinely good person. You're never going to find a perfect manager or coach. That person just doesn't exist. So if you had your druthers (love that word), you'd want your manager's biggest weakness to be, "makes some occasionally boneheaded decisions that rarely come back to haunt the team because of the horseshoe that was surgically inserted into his rear end during the '04 playoffs." He's certainly the best Red Sox manager of my lifetime. And beyond that, nobody spits sunflower seeds with more grace and precision.
